I can't remember if I heard TF or not. Bodak Yellow is a bop for sure and Drew Barrymore is gorgeous.

Jorja Smith)” Kali Uchis has really caught my attention in 2017. Her past music, or at least first few singles were on the boring side. But her guest appearance on “Get You” and single “Tyrant” opened me up to the past bops and the diversity of Ms. Uchis. It’s a love song but echoes this summery, sensual, tropically-tinged feeling. Kali serves light and airy and Jorja Smith joins in around the two-minute mark to serve some swagger: Spoiler 19. SZA, “Love Galore (feat. Travis Scott)” The song that started her commercial career. I honestly didn’t think it/she was going to happen. On "Love Galore" she opens up about past relationships and her own faults that lead to their demise and how she grows past them. I really enjoy the singing style and vocal delivery here over this booming production. This has been a great year for Travis, he’s been on a lot of hits and good songs this year. He offers an alternate perspective on the track. Spoiler 18. St. Vincent, “Los Ageless” “Los Ageless” hints of a spiteful break up, but demonstrates her most sexiest sounding songs yet. The chorus is spooky and roaring and the guitar riffs are what they always are with St. Vincent: amazing. Spoiler 17. Kendrick Lamar, “ELEMENT.” “DNA” was a good one but I was just WAITING for this to be a follow-up single to “HUMBLE.” Kendrick talks about his mainstream come up and being passed the torch to continue the legacy of Compton but also real lyricist’s. He also throws back subliminal messages he receives from other artists but still remains humble letting us know that although he can make hit records like anybody else he’s still K-Dot. I love a good boastful rap song, it gets me so hyped. Spoiler 16. Feist, “Century” I didn’t pay much attention to the band back in the day, perhaps I’m missing out on greatness like this and “Pleasure,” which I also liked. “Century” instantly grabbed me with it’s crashing drums and guitar instrumentals, vocal loops, uncomfortable silent moments and abruptness. Spoiler 15. Vince Staples, “Big Fish” It’s one of his few “basic” songs on the album but it’s still a damn good song. Vince’s rap delivery is so chill but still so hard and distinctive that it puts him in the talks of who’s the top 10 rappers alive. The sample of Juicy J looped over this production is so dope too.This song is literally a milly rock with an ugly face. Spoiler 14. Perfume Genius, “Slip Away” A sweet love song about forbidden (gay) love with an explosive art-pop chorus over a pounding rhythm track. Spoiler 13. The War On Drugs, “Strangest Thing” In the year of Hip-Hop and R&B TWOD slipped through the cracks and saved rock (kidding). “Strangest Thing” is a steady rock groove with a little country vibes. The magnificent guitar riffs and piano sections really elevates the song as it continues to build-up for nearly seven minutes Spoiler 12. Vince Staples, “Yeah Right (feat. Kendrick Lamar)” This song blew my mind when I first heard it. This the hardest beat of 2017 thanks to freaking SOPHIE and Flume with two of the best rap artists currently, Kendrick and Vince Staples. A very innovative sound and risky approach for Vince to take that most new artists don’t usually do if they didn’t start off fresh out the gate this way. Vince refrained from going in like I know he could on at least the first verse and leaves the rest for Kendrick to make a surprise guest appearance and annihilate this ****. Spoiler 11. Big Sean, “Bounce Back” Big Sean didn’t win the battle or the war against Kendrick, but I HAVE to acknowledge this bop. Big Sean had a good year himself. One of my favorite Hip-Hop chorus of the year and overall fun song. I feel like it’s that type of song every rapper would want to be their comeback single. Why didn’t he forward this to Meek? LMK was too basic for Kelela standards for me, so it took a while to really grow and appreciate it. It should have been a hit for her but we all know she has no machine behind her. Jamila Woods, “Holy” If you have time and an open mind, get into this carefree R&B-Gospel-esque song about self-worth, self-care and embracing one's blackness. Jamila didn’t need dramatic production and theatrics to move me in 2017. She used her soulful, raspy voice, airy harmonies, and encouraging lyrics to make a powerful song that wasn't radio candy but still re-playable. Spoiler 09. Calvin Harris, “Slide (feat. Migos & Frank Ocean)” For Migos, 2017 was their year as a Rap Group and even individually, but I can only tolerate so many of their records or features. “Slide” was an exception, their rap style over this Hip-Hop and dance infused production by Harris was actually tolerable. But of course it was Frank that made this the song of the summer. AND he did that while singing/rapping in monotone. Somehow he made the song more sultry than this groovy beat already was. Spoiler 08. Kelela, “Blue Light” The way queen is able to continue to elevate the genre of R&B with these R&B-electronic blends. She really does this the best. Kelela starts off with her soprano backed by her signature echoes and then unexpectedly her voice drifts off into auto-tune backed by these atmospheric synths when it reaches the chorus. Suddenly this song goes from steamy to a futuristic bop. An instant on the album and good choice of single. Spoiler 07. Lorde, “Homemade Dynamite” This is what I was waiting for, it saved Lorde for me. I did not listen to Melodrama until this somehow this surfaced my way months later when the album came out. Lorde stimulates you with her signature whisper style of singing on this sexy synth-pop track that also has an upbeat, clubby vibe as well. My favorite Lorde record since when she debuted as a new artist. Spoiler 06. Dua Lipa, “New Rules” The year of pop just wasn’t it for me, it just wasn’t. “New Rules” is a tad generic with its EDM and tropical house fuse that’s always done and lack of oomph, but it STILL wins because it’s still catchy and high energy regardless of the fact. It’s everything mainstream pop should be right now. Poor pop girls. What she was able to convey in the music video also enhanced my liking of the song. Spoiler 05. Kendrick Lamar, “HUMBLE.” Kendrick was relevant before this, but he was close but not quite mainstream just yet. It must have been hard being humble because he didn’t have to create a monster bang like this. It’s his most playful beat to date, he dumbed down his rhyme flow and made this song highly-quotable just so he can prove that he can make an instant hit like the rest of ‘em. “HUMBLE.” makes you wanna shake your non-existent dreads and throw them elbows. Spoiler 04. Frank Ocean, “Chanel” I don’t think anyone expected Frank to regularly debut new music after the release of the long-anticipated Blonde. This standalone single "Chanel" touches on themes like duality (while shifting from high and low pitches) and Frank's bisexuality and being more direct than he’s ever been. For the first 2 minutes there’s a trap influence in his delivery and lyrics while he’s rapping and then onward the song is more soulful and heart-felt while he’s singing, another contrast in the song. Spoiler 03. Kendrick Lamar, “DNA.” Easily the fiercest and hardest rap song in a long time. Kendrick lays out the themes of DAMN. with sick delivery on both parts of “DNA.” over a production you would have never thought was produced by Mike Will Made-It. He went from giving us something we could sing along to with his first single, to a single that reminds us that he's the best rapper alive. Spoiler 02. Sabrina Claudio, “Unravel Me” While I don’t think she’s the BEST new R&B girl of recent times, no one has snatched me with their first single like Sabrina did since “Two Weeks,” or “Apple Cherry” even. Maybe that is because it sounds so similar to them in certain ways. So maybe I’m giving a pass for being unoriginal and miss my gals Twigs and NAO. Still, this is the most sensual **** I’ve heard in awhile, her voice is so earthy. It has the perfect blend of neo-soul, r&b and the synths make it slightly on the alternative side. A gem of 2017. Spoiler 01. Sampha, “Plastic 100°C” “No One Knows Me (Like My Piano)” gets so much recognition from critics. Where is the love for Plastic? It’s been a great year for Alternative R&B artists and ATRL kind of forgets that Sampha was also in the mix. "Plastic C 100" is simply beautiful from it’s sound and lyricism. The song is about difficulties coping emotionally with a number of adverse events in his life and breaking the silence of his insecurities. Song begins to pick up with haunting piano riffs, harmonies, a thumping bass and then finally fades with the warm vocals of Sampha and some spacey sounds and Neil Armstrong that make you feel like you’re in the process of transmitting from the far reaches. Yes, my most played/favorite song of 2017 is an album opener, not a single, even though this is a singles lists apparently. I make the rules! Sampha has joined the realm of Bey, Miguel, Twigs, Disclosure, Tame Impala and The 1975. Congrats baby boy! Spoiler

lhdang2000 Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 Homemade Dynamite is THAT song, isn't it? Definitely on there as one of Lorde's best songs. Humble + DNA. As soon as I heard New Rules, I know this could be her breakout hit, but she has definitely surprised me.
