Pedro Posted January 1, 2018 Author Posted January 1, 2018 (edited) We're off to the very last section of my Best Of. Here's my favorite singles of 2017! It was not an easy task building up this list despite me thinking that 2017 wasn't exactly a memorable year for Pop Music. Nonetheless, I was able to narrow it down to the 100 songs I liked the most during the year and here they are. One thing you should know this list isn't about success or relevancy, it's 100% solely about my personal taste. I hope you like it! 110. Tijana Bogićević - "In Too Deep" 109. The Weeknd - "Rockin'" 108. Tove Lo - "Disco T*ts" 107. ZAYN & Taylor Swift - "I Don't Wanna Live Forever" 106. Rita Ora - "Your Song" 105. Mariette - "A Million Years (from Melodifestivalen 2017)" 104. Jessie J - "Think About That" 103. DJ Khaled - "Wild Thoughts (feat. Rihanna & Bryson Tiller)" 102. Lana Del Rey - "Coachella - Woodstock In My Mind" 101. Lorde - "Green Light" 100. Louis Tomlinson - "Back To You (feat. Bebe Rexha & Digital Farm Animals)" I haven't really paid much attention to One Direction members' projects after departing from the group. Well, actually I have never paid much attention to them overall as I haven't been a fan of the group neither. Nonetheless, while acts like Harry Styles or Niall Horan are releasing songs that fall completely outside of what I like to listen to, the remaining three are doing semi-interesting stuff. Louis teamed up with Bebe Rexha - who will chart more throughout the countdown - and delivered this minimalistic production that I truly like. It's fun, different and catchy. 1st and only appearance from Louis Tomlinson. 1st out of two apearances from Bebe Rexha and Digital Farm Animals. 99. Little Mix - "No More Sad Songs (feat. Machine Gun Kelly)" Oh wow, look at me including Little Mix in my Best Of Singles of 2017! Up until last year, I was everything but a supporter of the group. It's not like they are bad artists because they're not (they can sing, dance and compose music) yet they were too childish to my eyes and lacked versatility in their music. All of their songs were all "on your face", "we're bad bitches", "look at us" type of music which I truly despise and find pretentious. Nonetheless, during their new era they released great and mature Pop music that I truly enjoyed. "No More Sad Songs" is one of them. 1st out of two apearances from Little Mix. 1st and only appearance from Machine Gun Kelly. 98. Lea Michele - "Love Is Alive" I am generally not a big fan of huge ballads like this one but I couldn't resist to Lea Michele's "Love Is Alive". Not only the instrumental is completely elegant and so classy, she is singing her heart out, the lyrics are beautiful and it's touching because we all know to who she is singing to and you know that it comes directly from the heart. She is so underrated yet so damn talented. Just like how ATRL likes to say "talent lost" but music won! 1st and only apearance from Lea Michele. 97. Greta Zazza - "Like I Love You (from Eurovizijos 2017)" People in Lithuania really don't understand that the country is supposed to send in a good song for Eurovision, do they? It's just because I can't possibly understand how "Rain of Revolution" won over this amazing song from Greta Zazza. "Like I Love You" is an amazing Pop production that could easily be a hit if she was American or if it was sung by a big Popstar. Well, she is joining their national selection again this year so hopefully the song is as good and hopefully she gets selected. 1st and only apearance from Greta Zazza. 96. Lana Del Rey - "Summer Bummer (feat. A$AP Rocky and Playboi Carti)" Lana can truly pull anything off. Who would say that the singer that once wrote and produced the dramatic "Born To Die" or the mellow "Video Games" would be singing such a badass Hip Hop influenced song such as "Summer Bummer"? Let's not forget that a lot could do that but wouldn't necessarily sound good. Well, Lana sounds great, as if this genre is designed for her. She truly is an amazing artist who knows all of her capabilities. The beat is sick. 1st out of four apearances from Lana Del Rey. 1st out of two apearances from A$AP Rocky. 1st and only apearance from Playboi Carti. 95. Slavko - "Space" Oh, Slavko! He really tries and that's impressive. Slavko comes from Montenegro and represented the country with the fierce Pop track "Space". He didn't do very well and didn't even make it past the semifinals... After all he can't sing, he barely dances and you'll only notice him because of his iconic braid. Nonetheless, "Space" is such a fun and cool track that I can't help but to (i) sing along and (ii) move my feet to it. Most recently, Slavko appeared on the English version of the X Factor where Nicole Scherzinger fell in love with him! 1st out of 18 apearances from artists of the Eurovision Song Contest 2017. 94. Deolinda Kinzimba - "O Que Eu Vi Nos Meus Sonhos" It's now the second time you're being presented to this track as it was featured in my Best Of Non-English/Spanish Songs of 2017. "O Que Eu Vi Nos Meus Sonhos" is sung by the winner of the second season of The Voice Portugal, Deolinda Kinzimba. She is one of the best vocalists we have here and truly reminds me of something Whitney Houston could do vocally. She has a huge vocal range. In "O Que Eu Vi Nos Meus Sonhos", she doesn't exactly showcase them as it is a more contained but the elegance of the song is just too good to be left behind. 1st out of 2 apearances from Deolinda Kinzimba. 93. Ariana Grande - "Everyday (feat. Future)" It's a bit sad to see that she chose to release "Everyday" out of so many better choices in her "Dangerous Woman" album. This song was obviously never going to take off but I can see what she tried to do here as "Side to Side" can fall inside of the same music genre... Or similar! While the repeated "everyday, everyday" is catchy my main favorite parts of this song are precisely the verses as they sounds chill. Her tone is contained and is pleasant to hear! 1st and only apearance from Ariana Grande. 1st out of two apearances from Future. 92. Kesha - "Hymn" I like how minimalistic the production of "Hymn" is. It sounds magic, relaxing and heavenly. In fact, Kesha's singing can come off as a bit disturbing with such a contained instrumental. Well, besides the production, the song's meaning and lyrics are quite unique and very empowering. Despite the majority of her album - "Rainbow" - focuses on the same subject, "Hymn" is surely a highlight as generally empowering songs are louder or sadder. On the opposite side we have "Hymn", a midtempo that truly calms someone down. 1st out of four apearances from Kesha. 91. Kesha - "Woman (feat. The Dap-Kings Horns)" The first time I heard "Woman" I was not very happy with it. It sounded off, strange, loud and all over the place but, with time, I started appreciating it more and more. Today, I can say I love it. It's such a fun song and so empowering to women. Besides being fun to who is listening, one can say Kesha had a blast recording it - listen to her giggle during the song's second verse. In my opinion, the highlight of the song comes when the bridge breaks down: "don't buy me a drink, don't make my money, don't touch my weed, don't call me honey". 2nd out of four apearances from Kesha. We had no contact or interaction outside Best If/YTT but this type of "0/10" comes off as a bit rude when you're supposed to be "supportive". It's not like I care if member x or y likes or dislikes my taste but I am sure you could find better things to say such as "Green Light + Disco T*ts " and leave the parts you don't like behind. I personally would never rate 0/10 in anyone's Best Of as I find that rude.

Pedro Posted January 4, 2018 Author Posted January 4, 2018 (edited) Let's move on with a few more singles that rocked my 2017! 90. Fergie - "A Little Work" What I truly like about "A Little Work" is its meaning and lyrics. This song is extremely personal to Fergie and extremely empowering to everyone who struggles with mental illness, drugs, money and so on. When she says "Now it's just mama and them kids, and she said 'No matter how, I'll make sure the bills get paid'", it touches close to my heart as this is somehow my mother's motto and story. Fergie did pour her heart and soul into this song (and video) and one can tell she truly wanted this to smash. Nonetheless, on the negative side, I believe we can all agree that the song's production is a bit dated. 1st out of two appearances from Fergie. 89. Tinashe - "Flame" I have to admit that I only got into "Flame" quite recently but, you know what they say, better late than ever. The song is anything but unique and it's something someone like Ciara could easily pull as well but I truly like this type of cute R&B jams. I also like really like its lyrics and the respective meaning as one easily can fear that the person they love loses that "flame" for them. On top of that, it was the very first time I heard Tinashe do a midtempo, it suits her perfectly. 1st and only appearance from Tinashe. 88. Imri - "I Feel Alive" Get used to Eurovision songs as there'll be plenty more to come. "I Feel Alive" was the Israeli entry for this year. At first I truly fell in love with the song as it is exactly what I expect to hear in the contest: a good Pop Dance song with traditional influences. Nonetheless, even though I still enjoy it, the song quickly became less and less magic. In reality "I Feel Alive" is a bit generic and only towards the end the Israeli sounds come to life leaving space for improvement. It didn't come close to the feeling "Golden Boy" (2015) had. 2nd out of 18 appearances from artists of the Eurovision Song Contest 2017. 87. Mariah Carey - "The Star" Even though I am mostly here for Mariah Carey to go big on her vocals, I truly like when she contains herself and delivers something more balanced with her actual vocals. Her vocal ability is not the same she had a few years ago so, sometimes, when the studio version goes in on whistles and big notes, it sounds almost... Unreal. In songs such as "The Star", she is singing something she can actually pull off and still slay. Let's not forget that this is almost a Christmas song and there's only one Queen of Christmas. 1st out of two appearances from Mariah Carey. 86. Cashmere Cat - "Love Incredible (feat. Camila Cabello)" What I like about Cashmere Cat's productions is how unique they are and how you can, most of the times, recognize it's him who produced the tracks. When it comes to "Love Incredible", I really like how the production was made exactly for Camila's vocals, they are such a match to the song's mood and vibe, even though Camila can pull pretty much anything. It is a smooth production that never goes really hard. It's chill. 1st and only appearance from Cashmere Cat. 1st out of five appearances from Camila Cabello. 85. Charlie Puth - "Attention" It's impressive how Charlie Puth has become such a hit maker in recent years. I feel like everything he puts out becomes a hit. I am generally not very keen on this random hit makers but his tone is so smooth, unique and pleasant. "Attention" follows the vibe by delivering a humble production and a catchy chorus. I believe it's safe to say that Charlie, along with Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes build the male trinity of this generation in Pop Music. They all have very specific genres that make them distinctive. 1st and only appearance from Charlie Puth. 84. Papai Joci - "Origo" I am not sure if the gypsy community is big enough in Hungary (keeping in mind that Papai Joci is a gypsy) to represent the country at the Eurovision but when it comes to bring a completely different sound and genre to the Eurovision Song Contest, Hungary won with their unique "Origo". Mixing traditional sounds with rap was such an unpredictable step that truly pulled off as the country owned many votes from the public. When the violins kick in, the song is elevated to heaven. 3rd out of 18 appearances from artists of the Eurovision Song Contest 2017. 83. Deolinda Kinzimba - "More Than a 100" It was really unexpected to hear Deolinda Kinzimba - Portugal's The Voice winner - singing New Pop as she is a powerhouse vocalist that resembles Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey. On top of that, the Pop scenario in Portugal is anything but popular. Not only there isn't successful artists who sing it but there isn't anyone trying either. Only international acts such as Justin Bieber or Selena Gomez are able to pull such songs. Nonetheless, Deolinda took a risk and while it probably won't pay off, I love how her tone fits the song and makes it so appealing. 2nd and last appearance from Deolinda Kinzimba. 82. Hovig - "Gravity" It took me a while to get used and actually appreciate the Cyprian entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2017, "Gravity". While I've always like it, I also always felt like it was such a filler and never really went anywhere. Well, to be honest, I still think it lacks that "wow" factor yet its performance made me appreciate it and Hovig's voice is quite pleasant to hear. The song is quite modern and very trendy as well. 4th out of 18 appearances from artists of the Eurovision Song Contest 2017. 81. Halsey - "Now Or Never" The fact she released one of the weakest songs in her record as the first single will never make sense in my head. Nonetheless, "Now Or Never" is quite different, underground and quite alternative. Its production is very raw, dark and mature. I also can't possibly believe this song ended up being a top 20 hit in the US but that's probably because Halsey is quite a local act to my eyes and aside from "Closer", she hasn't had a hit in my country. 1st out of two appearances from Halsey. 80. Halsey - "Bad At Love" Still not the single I wanted from "Hopeless Fountain Kingdom" yet better. It's a lighter song that can actually be considered catchy with the loud chorus and the repetitive "uh-uh" after. Also, I feel like the song's success is explained by the fact it is more appealing and relatable than the previous "Now Or Never". Nonetheless, I wasn't expecting a top 10 hit either. 2nd and last appearance from Halsey. 79. Zara Larsson - "So Good (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)" The first time I played "So Good" was when the video came out. After one minute or so, I closed it. Not only the video wasn't doing anything from me but I wasn't expecting a groovier, R&B tune from Zara. Instead I expected a continuation of "Lush Life" or "Ain't My Fault". Well, when the album came out, I made sure to overplay it along with the title track and, since then, I started loving it more and more. It's one of Zara's most mature upbeat song where she actually goes beyond basic Pop. 1st out of five appearances from Zara Larsson. 1st out of two appearances from Ty Dolla $ign. 78. Carly Rae Jepsen - "Cut To The Feeling" What would be current Pop Music without Goddess Carly? She always delivers amazing productions that never fall within the generic ground or silly one as so many we know. "Cut To The Feeling" is an amazing song that has a fantastic chorus that truly make you want to get up on your feet and dance along. It has that je ne sais quoi that puts a smile on your face! Nonetheless, I have to admit I only started paying attention to it quite late this year hence why it's "this low". 1st and only appearance from Carly Rae Jepsen. 77. Koit Toome & Laura - "Verona" One of the most underrated songs in this year's Eurovision Song Contest. I am yet to understand what happened for the judges to snub it the way they did. Well, luckily we don't appreciate songs but their success in Eurovision. "Verona" is such a nice and elegant production of two lovers who are experiencing some tough times in their relationship. Just like the singers who sing it, the song is quite dramatic and as a lover of Pop and a lover of drama this is all I could ask for. 5th out of 18 appearances from artists of the Eurovision Song Contest 2017. 76. Camila Cabello - "OMG (feat. Quavo)" Camila and her team were really testing the waters with "OMG" (and even with "Havana" - yet to come). The songs sound nothing alike and bring to life two completely genres. "Havana" ended up doing better and got chosen but "OMG" is anything but bad. As I stated when talking about "Love Incredible", this Cuban girl can literally pull anything they give her. I am sure she could do heavy metal, to be honest. Well, enough of jokes. Her tone surely fits urban Pop. 2nd out of five appearances from Camila Cabello. 75. Maroon 5 - "What Lovers Do (feat. SZA)" Well, you know by now I truly enjoyed their album and "What Lovers Do" was actually what motivated me the most to check it out. I love how chill, light and happy this song is. It's not a dance Pop song that goes hard on the beat or a strong and powerful ballad that make you want to cry. Instead, it's there in the middle. It's so smooth, it reminds me of a nice day in a pool. Considering that's a good scenarion, this is a good song then. 1st out of two appearances from Maroon 5. 1st and only appearance from SZA. 74. Cardi B - "Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)" Not sure if this was all that for a #1 hit single yet it surely goes hard. Cardi B obviously reminds me of Nicki Minaj but not as good. Nonetheless, she truly brings all of that swag and badass attitude. The full hip hop instrumental gets me going and truly feel like a badass as well, even though I am anything but that. Either way, this obviously a very local hit. 1st and only appearance from Cardi B. 73. The Chainsmokers - "Paris" I am anything but a fan of straight radio hits but "Paris" is just too good. I love how soft the instrumental is and how the vocalist's voice along with Emily Warren's keep it that way. It's a relaxing song that simply feels good. Sometimes, it's good to have such songs in your playlist instead of only having the ones you truly love. It kind of gives you fresh air. 1st and only appearance from The Chainsmokers. 72. Black M - "Comme Moi (feat. Shakira)" Shakira's parts in "Comme Moi" are pure magic. She sounds phenomenal and makes, not only the song catchy, but up for the entire Black M's messy rap. His tone is so... Unpleasant and that's when Shakira gets in and gives you something that make it all worth the listen. The bridge - also sung by Shakira - is yet another highlight. The Queen of Latin Pop included a somewhat better version of this in her "El Dorado" album named "What We Said" with MAGIC!. 1st and only appearance from Black M. 1st out of four appearances from Shakira. 71. Lana Del Rey - "Groupie Love (feat. A$AP Rocky)" More than the song itself, even though it is such a calm midtempo that takes you to heaven and relaxes all of your body, the lyrics of the song are so unique. While they are not exactly relatable (not everyone is lucky to date a star), it makes people interested in trying to understand more of it. The song follows a somewhat vibe similar to "Love" and also contributes for the album's coherency. 2nd out of four apearances from Lana Del Rey. 1st and last apearance from A$AP Rocky.
