Roberto Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Nice. Can't wait for this, babe. I hope Shakira smashes, tbh.
Pedro Posted December 13, 2017 Author Posted December 13, 2017 (edited) I guess it is time we finally kick things of with my favorite movies of the year. Being ATRL a forum dedicated to Pop Culture, I feel like cinema automatically falls for second plan for most of us... Unless a Pop Diva makes an appeareance, duh! Nonetheless, 2017 was probably the year I went to the movies more often. Being in a relationship makes it easier as it is always a good idea for a date. With this being said, I am happy I got to see so many movies and, therefore, had a bunch of choices to choose from and I wasn't forced to include movies I didn't particularly like. I will be presenting the top 10 movies of the year for me along with two extra ones that I did like but weren't enough to make the top 10. Director: Christopher Landon | Stars: Jessica Rothe, Israel Broussard | Genre: Thriller | IMDb Rate: 6,5 Review: I knew I had to watch this movie the moment I saw its trailer. I loved its unique concept and truly had a good time watching it. Nonetheless, the final outcome was disappointing. Without disclosing much details on the “who did it”, the real criminal of the story was very unexpected and barely had any attention throughout the movie. It felt random. Director: David Leitch | Stars: Charlize Theron, James McAvoy | Genre: Action | IMDb Rate: 6,8 Review: The theme behind the movie isn’t very interesting overall as there are million movies of the same genre released every year. Nonetheless, Charlize’s performance along with the mystery, sexuality and action behind it definitely gets you going. Her performance with Sofia Boutella was extremely sexy! Director: Daniel Espinosa | Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds | Genre: Sci-Fi | IMDb Rate: 6,6 Review: When I chose to see “Life”, I didn’t know what I was going for. I gave a quick look to the plot and bought the tickets. My first thought was: “What was I thinking?” There were some parts of the movie that really grossed me out but overall, I truly enjoyed the story and especially the ending - this may be a little controversial as we all love happy endings. It opened a slot for a second part which I hope eventually happens. Director: Luc Besson | Stars: Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne | Genre: Fantasy | IMDb Rate: 6,6 Review: I will confess that I mostly watched this movie due to Rihanna… For her to die and appear for less than 20 minutes. Oh well! Luckily, I truly like this type of movies and really enjoyed it despite the fact of not liking Cara a bit. The mixture of fantasy, action, romance and even comedy did the trick for me. Director: Patty Jenkins | Stars: Gal Gadot, Chris Pine | Genre: Fantasy | IMDb Rate: 7,6 Review: I am not a huge fan of super heroes movies but this time we had a girl and that was exciting but I am shocked at how long it took for them to put this movie together. Back in late 2000s, Jennifer Love Hewitt was rumoured to play Wonder Woman and only in 2017 it came out, without her (which makes me really sad). Nonetheless, Gal did a wonderful job. Her character was full of hope and female empowerment, it was like a breath of fresh air and inspiring! Director: Stella Meghie | Stars: Amandla Stenberg, Nick Robinson | Genre: Drama | IMDb Rate: 6,4 Review: If the previous movie - “Beauty and the Best” - didn’t surpass my expectations, this one surely did. If it wasn’t for my sister I wouldn’t have seen it. She asked… Or begged for us to go watch it and it was a cute surprise. It’s obviously a cute movie for teenage girls but it wasn’t as cheesy as I thought it would be. Nice concept, nice actors. Director: Niels Arden Oplev | Stars: Ellen Page, Diego Luna | Genre: Sci-Fi | IMDb Rate: 5,0 Review: I am surprised to see such a bad rate on IMDb. The movie wasn’t bad. In fact, it touched unique matters and could be seen as an empowering movie as all of the characters kind of challenge themselves. I believe this rate is related with the fact it is a movie that could fall within teenager’s type of movies. Don’t judge a book by its cover! Director: Niki Caro | Stars: Jessica Chastain, Johan Heldenbergh | Genre: History | IMDb Rate: 7,0 Review: I would say that my ultimate favorite movie genre is history and everything related. I love exploring the past, I love the costumes, the traditions, the different mentalities... I love studying the War times and literally everything connected. As if that wasn’t enough for me to be sold to this beautiful movie, it also is about animals and saving them. I am an animal lover myself. This seriously couldn’t go wrong and it didn’t. I highly doubt many have watched and if you didn’t, you should check it out. Director: James Ponsoldt | Stars: Emma Watson, Tom Hanks | Genre: Drama | IMDb Rate: 5,3 Review: This movie had an impact on me. I left the theater wishing this could become reality as I believe many terror attacks (for example) would be avoided. Without revealing many spoilers, the movie discusses a world without privacy, a world where everything is filmed and documented. Think about a reality show but in real life. You film your life and every corner of the world has an installed camera. Of course, downsides are also part of the movie but wouldn’t you sacrifice your privacy for peace? I would. Director: Paul W.S. Anderson | Stars: Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter | Genre: Action | IMDb Rate: 5,6 Review: I am a huge fan of Resident Evil in all of its forms. Not only I started playing the games when I was very young but have been following the development of the story since 2002… I was 9! Of course the movie used to scare me way more than it does now but I feel like it has evolved from simple easy scares to a real storyline and, honestly, those easy scares are boring nowadays. Well, I loved this Final Chapter so much it ranks second among my favorite movies from the saga. Director: Bill Condon | Stars: Emma Watson, Dan Stevens | Genre: Fantasy | IMDb Rate: 7,3 Review: I believe I had huge expectations for this movie and that ended up hurting my final opinion. While I did enjoy the movie, Emma’s performance and the adaptation itself, I wish there would’ve been less singing. Not that I am anti musicals, I love them in fact, but the singing parts were way too long in my opinion. Nonetheless, beautiful visuals and great adaptation. Director: Andy Muschietti | Stars: Bill Skarsgård, Jaeden Lieberher | Genre: Horror | IMDb Rate: 7,7 Review: The fact that I have been disliking horror movies more and more throughout the years to then have an horror movie as my favorite movie of 2017 says a lot about “It”. The mixture between horror, mystery and comedy did wonders for me and totally made it stand out among any other movie. On top of that, it had been awhile since a movie actually scared me - not counting the easy scares created by suspense. “It” was unpredictable and surprisingly amazing. I can’t wait for the follow up! Next: Top 10 Best Choreographies NOTE: I will be commenting on everyone's Best Of during tomorrow! Thank you for the comments so far! Edited December 16, 2017 by Pedro
shelven Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 nnn I haven't seen any of these movies I heard great things about IT, but I get so easily scared by horror movies that I'd probably be scarred if I watched it
Remmy Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Attempted to watch Atomic Blonde last month but turned it off around 40 minutes in. It was just too confusing and a bit boring. Not a DC fan at all (especially since they disappointed me extra hard with Suicide Squad), but Wonder Woman was definitely solid. Beauty and the Beast was incredibly underwhelming, I wasn't sold on ANYTHING. Haven't seen a good amount of this list because I'm a wuss.
potent Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 I've seen Beauty and the Beast, It, and Happy Death Day, I liked them all to some degree but Happy Death Day kinda felt more like a comedy than a horror movie? Like I wanted to be scared and in that aspect I was disappointed I fell asleep in Wonder Woman
Playa Playa Posted December 14, 2017 Posted December 14, 2017 +1 for including all them details. So useful considering I haven't heard of most of them Obviously I watched IT though and it was surprisingly good and fun.
