Welcome to Playa Playa's Best of 2017

With 2017 quickly coming to a close, many will look back over what has happened in these past 12 months and

be overwhelmed. It's been a year of major disruption and change–whether that be a record high for natural disasters or

the rise of the #MeToo movement–that's put pop culture on a new wavelength. We gradually settled into the chaos and

found different ways to experience or escape it throughout the year. In the following lists, you will find inventive

shows that explore paths of grief and hope, a celebration of diversity in rap music, and unforgettable filmmaking debuts.

22. Still quite funny, but a relatively uneventful season. Not being in DC with the insanity of politics was a major issue for the show and there were instances of Selina just being mean, devoid of any humour or heart that came with it in in the past. But there was still a lot of good about the season with “Blurb” being my favourite episode. Hugh Laurie continues to be an amazing addition to the cast and the sexual tension scene in the aforementioned episode is one of my favourites of the show. Jonah's role keeps getting bigger too which works brilliantly, and I'm a little too excited to see his run for the presidency. The cast being close-knit next season, with a structural conceit, should do wonders and I'm satisfied with it ending late next year.

21. Kimmy Schmidt's third run focused its attention on absurdist character-driven stories, branching out to utilize Titus, Jacqueline and Lilian even more. Doubling back on an emotionally effective arc for Kimmy was not the best choice but the show still provided the same hilarious comedic style. Titus also cemented himself as the star of the show (okay, he had already done that) with a string of great moments including the Lemonade”-inspired musical numbers and the aftermath of his ill-fated “I Ate Dionne Warwick” cruise. However, as I noted last year, Tina Fey missing the mark at cultural criticism is still an issue for the show, but it's fortunately secluded to one poor storyline. This season is probably the most consistent, and even without it being as emotionally satisfying, there's still a lot to love about it.

20. Nothing especially new, Trial & Error is populated with the same kind of hilarious gags and eccentric characters as many of its predecessors but in the form of a mockumentary take on true-crime docs like Making a Murderer and The Jinx. The sitcom formula is overfamiliar now but the serialized murder mystery element is a welcomed addition that uses suspense to hilarious effect and provides a structure for the sillier comedic moments. The moments hit and miss often but the show got everything right in its casting with John Lithgow, Sherri Shepherd and Jayma Mays leading the talented ensemble committed to making the eccentric characters work.

I only watched Trial & Error from these. I'm still on S5 of Veep, and I dropped Kimmy for good.

Trial & Error :dies: Nicholas D'Agosto works great as the straight man 'center' of the show to all the silly characters around him.

I need to get back into Veep, stopped watching it like last season for no reason.

I haven't heard of Trial & Error before but it seems good from the sound of it.

And it stars Nicholas D'Agosto :smitten:

I never got into Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt but I should probably give it another go.

I agree with what you said about the anti-PC stuff without even seeing it, Tina never gets stuff like that right.
