Green Light and Whatever It Takes :alexz:

Imagine Dragons did a great job this year although they didn't really released their best songs imo.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend deserves it :weeps:

I always knew the show was going to go in that direction but I didn't expect it to be as great as it was.

Okay mess, so I got home from my vacation and kind of got lazy to update this :rip:

I definitely still want to finish it though, and there's only two days worth of updates left (Singles #10-6 and then the finale with TV Show #1 and Singles #5-1). Not sure if I'll have time to update tomorrow, so the last two days will either be tomorrow and Sunday, or Sunday and Monday. But I hope to have this wrapped up by Monday at the latest.

Ok, let's finally do this! Singles #10-6 coming up.

shelven's Top 50 Singles of 2017

#10: "Homemade Dynamite"

Lorde

As I did with "Move Your Body" earlier in this list, I'm using the release of a remixed version of this song as an excuse to talk about the original which I greatly prefer. What makes me love "Homemade Dynamite" so much is that it strikes an absolutely perfect balance between feeling fresh for Lorde while also still containing all of the qualities I grew to love in Lorde after "Pure Heroine". Lorde once again proves to be a master of unique, fascinating lyrics in the song's verses, and then flips her style slightly on the chorus, where the lyrics are simpler and more repetitive, but effortlessly catchy and memorable as a result. The production harkens back to the tone often found on "Pure Heroine", but with a more modern and upbeat twist that fits perfectly on "Melodrama". Most of all, what I love about this song is it really showcases Lorde's distinct personality in subtle moments, like her unique style of harmonies and endearing, raw moments like the explosion noise she makes before the final chorus.

#9: "Feel It Still"

Portugal. The Man

If this list were a "Top 50 Instrumentals of 2017" list, then "Feel It Still" would be a very strong contender to top that list. The production of this song is absolutely stellar, with every single instrument and moment feeling like it contributes to an overall sound and feel that Portugal. The Man were striving for with this song. The rhythmic drum line and bass pairing, the well-timed inclusion of the flashy horns, the crisp claps and the occasional synths that make up this instrumental all work together to create a song that is satisfying and joyous to listen to. It's a song that's a marvel in terms of how well it works despite its simplicity - even the lyrics are simple and the vocal performance is minimalist, but that just adds to the song's catchiness and undeniable replayability.

#8: "Praying"

Kesha

Almost every single artist mentions in at least one interview that music is their way to release their emotions and express what they're feeling, and on "Praying", you can feel just how true that is for Kesha. I can't remember the last time a major hit has felt this distinctly personal and honest - every single vocal moment in the song feels like a moment where Kesha is going through catharsis, and that makes "Praying" almost become a cathartic experience for the listener too as a result. The transition halfway through the song from a stripped down piano ballad to a proud and powerful explosion of drums and horns feels like a triumph for Kesha and for the listener. And while the lyrics on the track aren't filled with complex or stylistic wording, that actually works in the song's favour, because the result is a universal anthem that feels like it's coming straight from Kesha's heart into the world.

#7: "Never Give Up"

Sia

While many people will debate whether it was a good or bad move for Sia to hone into a much more specific sound after the success of "Cheap Thrills", it's a sound that I absolutely love, and what I love about it even more is that it feels like every time Sia releases a new song with a similar sound, she has improved from the previous one. That's exactly how I feel about "Never Give Up" - it's far from a new sound for Sia, but it feels like she has learned what made songs like "Cheap Thrills" and "The Greatest" work, and has built off those strengths to make something even more enjoyable and exciting to listen to. The instrumental on the song's verses that are reminiscent of the Bollywood musical style is a delight to listen to (and also works to differentiate the song from some of Sia's other recent singles), and the chorus is an excitingly powerful moment that makes you want to scream the universal lyrics at the top of your lungs when you listen to it.

#6: "Love"

Lana Del Rey

I can't really say I've ever been a proper fan of Lana Del Rey - I've liked a few songs here and there but have never been motivated to check out her albums - but "Love" really makes me realize why so many people are so passionate about her music. "Love" is the type of song that makes me want to stop everything I'm doing, close my eyes and really feel the song when I listen to it. This is largely thanks to a fantastic instrumental that is simple and minimal on the surface, yet feels so magical and emotionally powerful when actually listening to it. Lana's airy, light vocal style also works perfectly on top of it, with her vocals and the production pairing up to create a euphoric, satisfyingly calming song that transports the listener to a different - and undeniably positive - mental state.

Ugh I really wanted to start the finale on the next page, but I'm not going to filler post 4 times just to get it there :rip: So I guess TV Show #1 (coming up now) will be on this page and the Top 5 Singles (coming later tonight) will hopefully be on the next page.
