shelven Posted December 17, 2017 Author Posted December 17, 2017 shelven's Top 50 Singles of 2017 #40: "City Of Stars" Ryan Gosling & Emma Stone "La La Land" emerged as one of my favourite movies of 2016, and the film's soundtrack was a big contributor to my love for the movie. As the movie's central song that was used at the forefront of its marketing, it is no surprise that "City Of Stars" acts as a strong representation of all the qualities I love about this soundtrack. The song is simple but feels effortlessly universal, and subtle moments in the song (like Emma's laugh during the bridge) help evoke a sense of sincerity and honesty in the song. While many people debated over whether or not casting Ryan and Emma as the leads of this movie was a smart choice given that they're not amazing singers from a technical standpoint, I thought that the amateur characteristic of their voices helped build that sincerity even more, and adds a unique emotional quality to this song in particular. #39: "Boom Boom" RedOne, Daddy Yankee, French Montana & Dinah Jane When this song was announced and I saw its list of artists, I was really expecting a mediocre song that I would only tolerate because of Dinah's inclusion... but I ended up being really pleasantly surprised. While "Boom Boom" can definitely be described as a bit "basic" and doesn't offer anything groundbreaking or super powerful, it's an EXTREMELY catchy track, and I can't help but smile and be put in a good mood whenever I listen to it. Dinah unsurprisingly sounds fantastic on her (unfortunately very short) bridge, and Daddy Yankee's upbeat rap verse mixed with the song's tropical production works really well. #38: "Despacito" Luis Fonsi feat. Daddy Yankee When the Justin Bieber remix of this song was released and proceeded to take over the world, I hated it. REALLY hated it. But what the atrocious remix made me realize is that the original version of the song was actually pretty good. Like with "Boom Boom", this is simply a really catchy song - I constantly found myself singing along to the chorus even though I didn't understand most of the words, and Daddy Yankee's fast-paced verse was a fun highlight of the song. While I really wish we hadn't been subjected to Bieber's lame opening verse and broken Spanish on the radio for months, the original core of "Despacito" is still an enjoyable, mood-lifting song. #37: "Wild Thoughts" DJ Khaled feat. Rihanna & Bryson Tiller After highlighting "Lemon" and "Selfish" earlier in this list, "Wild Thoughts" completes the trinity of 2017 songs that I probably wouldn't have liked if it wasn't for Rihanna's stellar contribution. Rihanna absolutely shines on this song, with her vocals being sultry and sexy over an instrumental that consistently matches her in terms of its own sultriness and sexiness. The "Maria Maria" sample felt random when the song first came out, but I grew to really enjoy it and its use in the song. Admittedly I'm not a huge fan of Bryson's verse, but thankfully it's only a small interruption to the great pairing of Rihanna's vocal style with Khaled's inventive production. #36: "Sorry Not Sorry" Demi Lovato For the most part, 2017 was a year of songs that really grabbed me on my very first listen, but "Sorry Not Sorry" was an exception to that. When I first heard the song, I didn't really have much of a reaction and it felt mediocre, but it went on to grow on me immensely. Demi really nails the sassy approach she goes for on this track, both in the attitude-filled lyrics and her sharp and confident delivery of those lyrics. The song's production also really helped it grow on me, with its various different elements like its snap-filled verses, piano riff pre-chorus and bass-heavy chorus working together to keep the song interesting and exciting for me after I had already heard it a few times.
grandewhispers Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 Sorry not Sorry I'm glad it grew on you! And I agree, the production really helps

shelven Posted December 19, 2017 Author Posted December 19, 2017 shelven's Top 50 Singles of 2017 #35: "Wolves" Selena Gomez & Marshmello I've heard many people on ATRL say that "Wolves" is Selena's weakest release in 2017, but I actually feel the exact opposite way. After finding "It Ain't Me" a bit boring, "Bad Liar" cute but somewhat try-hard, and "Fetish" generic, I feel like Selena finally nailed it at the end of the year with this song. As with "Silence", Marshmello's production is perfectly polished, catchy and contains enough of his unique qualities to make it feel fresh. Selena's sexy and airy vocals are a perfect match for this track, with a light verse and pre-chorus that flows smoothly into an exhilarating and building chorus before the electronic breakdown. #34: "Hard Times" Paramore When I listened to "Hard Times" for the very first time, I didn't really know what to think, because it was so drastically different from my expectations for Paramore's next single. But I very quickly began to appreciate this song's uniqueness and charming quirks. Hayley's vocals are great and exude a ton of personality (particularly on the "rock bottom" hook that was initially off-putting to me but very quickly became a highlight of the song for me) and the instrumental manages to simultaneously evoke a sense of 80s nostalgia while also adding its own twist that makes it feel fresh and unique. Overall, while I didn't end up listening to this song as often as I expected to, it was definitely one of the more memorable 2017 releases for me. #33: "Bad At Love" Halsey Like with "Perfect Places", I was actually slightly disappointed when "Bad At Love" was announced as the second single off "Hopeless Fountain Kingdom" simply because the album is so strong and is filled with so many songs that I consider to be better and more enjoyable. But even though it wouldn't have been my first choice for a single, "Bad At Love" is nonetheless a great song. I love Halsey's interesting syllable delivery on the verses, and the loud and explosive chorus feels honest from both a lyrical and vocal perspective. The song also ended up growing on me far more than I expected it to - even though I barely listened to it before it became a single, I ended up really looking forward to hearing it whenever it came on the radio. #32: "Dusk Till Dawn" ZAYN feat. Sia A duet between ZAYN and Sia is a pairing I would have never envisioned before this year, but it works surprisingly well in practice. Sia's vocals are so raw and powerful that I honestly don't think I'll ever dislike a song that she's on, and the dark and moody production of "Dusk Till Dawn" matches her vocal style well and makes her feel like a natural fit for this track. Although I've always found ZAYN's vocals on his solo singles to be a bit bland and forgettable (and it's possible that I may have liked this song even more with a different male artist on it), his voice is complemented well by Sia's, which leads to some nice harmonies and moments between the two of them, particularly on the song's bridge. #31: "All Night" Steve Aoki & Lauren Jauregui Lauren's tone is one of my absolute favourite in pop music right now, so even though I love her moments in 5H's music as well as in Halsey's "Strangers", I was waiting for a time when we'd finally get a song where her vocals were front and centre. We finally got that with "All Night", and Lauren certainly did not disappoint. Her sultry tone and signature rasp are present throughout the entire track, and we really get a preview of the full range of her vocal abilities, with both soft, tender moments in the verses as well as powerful belts and runs in the song's final chorus. While I really wish she had worked with a different producer than Steve Aoki (the production of this song is cute, but it definitely feels somewhat dated), she still managed to deliver great vocals on a mature and enjoyable song.
