Mezik Posted December 20, 2017 Author Posted December 20, 2017 (edited) Rock Single of the Year Rock music is the back bone of modern music today. Every song released today, you can most likely hear the influences of key rock elements - which makes it a universal genre. One of my favourite things about rock music is that some of history's most influential musicians such as The Beatles, Elvis, Linda Rondstadt, Tina Turner and Fleetwood Mac defined rock music. Today there is a new generation of rock artist, all with their own specialties that may or may not influence future musicians with what they release. Here are this years nominations for Rock Single of the Year. Alice Merton - 'No Roots' This song definitely benefited from last minute searching to fill the categories (as modern-rock music is my least listened to genre). However, I am quite happy that I found this song because it is a great song. I think the simplicity in the production helps highlight Alice's deeper tone of voice, and does not overwhelm the track. The chorus is catchy, the the lyrics are relatable which are to key components for me to like a song. Harry Styles - 'Kiwi' Kiwi is plan and simple a fun rock sock. It isn't meant to be an artistic statement, nor a political piece - it is pure rock and roll. The progression of the verses are fun an exciting, and builds up to a blast of a chorus that completely caught me off guard. Unlike his debut single, Kiwi was not meant to have crossover appeal which gives it a much more genuine sound. The Killers - 'The Man' This song is just one big psychedelic-rock, dance fest. Brandon's voice on the lead vocals add character to the song that takes it to the next level. This is one of the few songs that I listen to where there isn't a particular section (verse/chorus) that I'm glued too. The entire song just works, and was a solid 'comeback' single after no new official music in quite some time. Portugal. The Man - 'Feel it Still' One of the defining singles of the year, Feel it Still is a fun, breezy, care-free song - or so I thought until I read the lyrics. But, I think the song works because you don't actually understand anything the lead singer. Regardless, even with just the production and barely passing by the chorus it is a good song and nice to see the band get a mainstream hit. Rise Against - 'The Violence' Since I was a kid, I always remembered Rise Against releasing politically motive music that always has a degree of awareness to the messages being portrayed - which is why I always enjoy their music. The Violence has a inspiring message to it that really gets one to think, and that's rare in today's music. I really wish we would have gotten the music video they anticipated on releasing because I am sure it would've catapulted this song up the charts with viral videos becoming a huge component to chart success. Vance Joy - 'Lay it on Me' Vancy Joy always makes music that warms the heart and makes one just feel relaxed. Even with this single perhaps being a bit more heavy sonically, it's so organic sounding and may be his best release since his break through hit Riptide. Edited December 20, 2017 by Mezik
JGibson Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 All solid nominees sans Harry Styles. Glad to see No Roots listed somewhere in the best ofs.
Mezik Posted December 20, 2017 Author Posted December 20, 2017 (edited) R&B / Hip-Hop Single of the Year With streaming picking up this year, urban music truly did shine. Not only did they dominate the top ten this year, they also were responsible for producing some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful hits. These six singles are testaments of the the new urban peak. These are the nominations for the 2017 R&B/Hip-Hop Single of the Year. Big Sean - 'Bounce Back' I played this song one too many times at the club during the winter months. But his flow is quick and smart, and he sounds confident. May be generic, but it definitely is a good listen. Bruno Mars - 'That's What I Like' Glorious R&B in such an old school form, Bruno really shined on this single. Bruno just has a way to make anything he records turns into magic - and this song is no different. Cardi B - 'Bodak Yellow' She blew up out of no where, and rightfully so. Bodak Yellow has Cardi B exuding such swagger, and hustle that she showed why she is the baddest new female MC around. I'm hoping she doesn't go down the same path as Iggy, because what she's given so far is all quality work that I cannot get enough of. Kenderick Lamar - 'HUMBLE.' Can you have a category for best hip-hop without including the man who defined it this year? This man released the hottest single of the year, and not only did it come with a stunning visual - it also came with a plethora of recognition, all which is deserved. Migos, Cardi B & Nicki Minaj - 'Motorsport' When these three come together they make magic. It's a hot bop, and the production is what makes the song. The battle is constantly Cardi vs. Nicki but the truth is both there verses make the song what it is, and if you take any of the three out then the song wouldn't be nearly as good. SZA feat. Travis Scott - 'Love Galore' So smooth, and so relaxing, SZA's voice just has an element of calmness to it that makes you just close your eyes and feel every word she is singing. I'm glad she was this years breakout girl, because her album is exquisite - and unlike anything else released this year. Edited December 31, 2017 by Mezik

Mezik Posted December 31, 2017 Author Posted December 31, 2017 Pop Single of the Year Pop music is usually the genre that dominates the music scene, but this year we saw them fade into the background - and instead of generic, uninspired, bores being recycled time after time, this year we saw that only truly the best pop songs made an impact. The following six songs broke barriers, and stayed in the back of all of our minds for 2017. These are the nominees for the 2017 Mezik Music Awards. Carly Rae Jepsen - 'Cut to the Feeling' We were lucky that the, recently crowned, queen of pop music blessed us with a new track this year. Not only is it true to Carly's signature bubble-gum, 90s inspired style we have seen since KISS/EMOTION, but it has an explosive chorus that just sends a jolt of euphoria throughout your entire body and makes you lose yourself for a minute. This song is a spiritual experience - and Carly continues to assert to everyone that she is #HereForTheMusicNotCharts. Dua Lipa - 'New Rules' If there was someone who should be named the breakout artist of 2017, it definitely belongs to Dua (sorry Camillizers). Dua's worldwide smash 'New Rules' sort of became a cult song with it's viral music video. Asides from the video, the song has a simple message that everyone can relate too that is meant to be serious - but with the light, airy, production it just presents itself as a song that you want to get up to dance too. New Rules was definitely one of the singles that I was happy to hear play on the radio continuously. Kesha - 'Praying' While some artists were all over the media that they wanted to release "political art statements" and had to ensure EVERYBODY knew, Kesha simply released a bold statement that was a representation of survival, new beginnings and empowerment. Kesha showcases her vocals unlike any way she has before, and proved to the world that she had more to offer than being a ditsy party girl. Praying was one of the highlights of all music this year, and helped Kesha earn her first grammy nomination with the track. With an album that was filled with equally as good tracks, it is easy to assume that this track will go down in music history. Lady Gaga - 'The Cure' I will be the first to admit, despite Lady Gaga pouring her heart into 'Joanne' that it was a tremendously horrid album and nothing that came out of it had the appeal that her surprise to Coachella Concert Goers 'The Cure' has. Sometimes simplicity is all Gaga needs, and on The Cure she comes across as so much more genuine then any of her other music she has released since Born this Way. Fun, pop, Gaga is the best Gaga. Not only did she prove she still has her talent to write a infectious pop hit, she proved that she still has the magic she held when she first introduced the world to her music with The Fame/Fame Monster. Lorde - 'Green Light' Lorde let everyone enter her personal diary this year, and Green Light was the first chapter. The track which has her waiting for the 'green light' to move on with her life, is an all-around dance in your living room party, while relating to your previous heartbreak. Lorde has such a raw talent for songwriting, at such a young age, that the way she is able to expose her vulnerability is such a happy and uplifting way is what makes this track truly special. Taylor Swift - '...Ready for it?' I personally feel this is the best track to come out of the 'reputation' era. I think I just love how dark and eerie it begins, and the proceeds to be such a fun song. While it is kinda all over the place, the way it comes all together works - and feels like it is the closest track to 1989 Taylor where every track was cleverly written, and actually had inspiration to it.
lhdang2000 Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 Welcome back. Really great nominations. Rooting for Praying. However, whichever tracks win would make me really happy.
