Yay Take Me Apart :clap3: I agree that Kelela stands out in the new rnb crowd. She really knows her sound

Posted

I am sorry but I am unable to comment much about this set as I don't know any of those! Looking forward more updates!

Party i expected it to be higher. love thr album tho. Kelelas output this year is just ok

I tried to warm up to Signal but meh... it's still their weakest effort imo.

Haven't checked much boy group records this year except for NCT 127, i need to catch up!

Don't Recall is such an amazing track. :jonny:

I've never liked a Kpop group until KARD releases ONN. :jonny:

With that said, they will do really well on my year-end. :eli:

Lets mosey on to the top 10/20

~Albums~

12. American Dream - LCD Soundsystem

779b034b68a3336aa8725fd0f193e99f.1000x1000x1.jpg

The album incorperates everything we love about LCD Soundsystem but never repeats itself. While always self-aware, we get lots of lyrics of self-reflection. Which is warranted considering the pretty cool career they've had til this point.

See: tonite, american dream, call the police

11. Number 1 Angel - Charli XCX

af17e595.jpg

Charli follows up her full dive into pc music (vroom vroom) with this little number. While it scales back some of the more adventurous and dynamic sounds, it provides focus and a bit more fun. For the most part, the guests here are well utilized and it sounds like the best possible pop dj album.

See: 3AM (Pull Up), Dreamer, Lipgloss

30. Blue Moon - Hyolyn/Changmo

0ce6756cde7e589af3b599d1733befd8.680x453x1.jpg

Hyolyn sounds silky smooth in this cut, while it is pretty much a generic edm song, i appreciate the drop being very soft. The whole song is just pleasant to listen to

Spoiler

29. Why Don't You Know - Chungha/Nucksal

chungha1.jpg

Basically the same as above :rip: except Chungha is a Taeyeon clone clown. A bop nonetheless

Spoiler

28. Lip & Hip - Hyuna

tumblr_p0fmj5QP7Q1vr4y9yo1_500.gif

OMGGGG it's everything we love Hyuna for. Suuuper bratty, fun and sexy. While How's This might have put some people off for being a bit more abrasive, Lip & Hip finds the sweet spot that leaves you wanting more. Who is singing in the prechorus tho? :rip:

Spoiler

27. I Got Love - Taeyeon

taeyeon-i-got-love-mv-teaser.jpg

While I am aware there is alot of Taeyeon here, she did her thing this year. The teaser track to her full length album served some Boa realness, but probably more adventerous on the production side. It's super sexy and the almost quite icy breakdown is amazing

Spoiler

26. Thirsty - Girls' Day

girlsday-170317.jpg

A cute tropical bop, the girls serve alot of personality here and the rhyming is on point. Super infectious

-No Video-

25. Superwoman - Minzy

a7c3c51a52fd0952bf831e03e93c4944cd13993b_hq.jpg

This song is kind of objectively bad. The production is thin, and its cheesy in the worst way. But i cant help but find the horrible duck quacking noise sounding beat really catchy. I love the dance too. All in all we are rooting for minzy in this corner

Spoiler

24. Really Really - Winner

winner1.jpg

What a great video

Spoiler

23. Spring Day - BTS

16601825_1570482639633659_2782837737628483480_o.jpg.2e7d7024e3a3b30def8e7dc3e0a343dc.jpg

A very mature single I wouldn't expect from them, it's a nice ballad and the choreography is probably the best of the year for any group. More this less micdrop plz

Spoiler

22. Baby Don't Like It - NCT127

nct-nct-127_1483848010_af_org.jpg

serving 90s rnb group. The bedrock noises always send me.

-No Video-

21. Goodnight - Dreamcatcher

7e236fe8a27b4e1b439bb0fb9cfa2faa7405f79d_hq.jpg

If it ain't broke don't fix it. Dreamcatcher followup their breakout (internationally i guess) single with a song in vein with its rock spirit. The song borrows from the kawaiimetal trends that have been popularized in Japan and meet tight choreography from korea for a stellar rush

Lip & Hip's ghost singer is still SENDING me djfhujdsh but it's her first good song in forever so can't complain.

Baby Don't Like It and Good Night are both fantastic, both my second favourites from their respective groups this year and I Got Love is the only solo Taeyeon song I like.

Gonna finish albums because I'm spending the weekend at baes

:gaycat1:

10. CTRL - SZA

1200x630bb.jpg

SZA came swinging with this album, right from the opening track. These tracks about romance all have so much character and interesting stories. There's development and the character is not one dimensional. The recordings kind of get a little played out if I have to critique a little but otherwise, engaging from beginning to end.

See: The Weekend, Prom, Normal Girl

9. The Weather - Pond

b5d8662d.jpg

This album is so much fun! It's campy af but the instrumentals mean business. Once you clear the fog on the camp value you find some derk real topics too. The album is backed by members of Tame Impala and the influences shine through, so everyone who likes them will obviously love this.

See: Colder Than Ice, Paint Me Silver, The Weather

8. Villains - Queens Of The Stone Age

queens-of-the-stone-age.jpg

Queens co. follow up a magnum opus of an album with a little fun. What separates this from Era Vulgaris as a fun album is the level of maturity that steps into the reign here. Josh here is very much a father and a husband, but still gives a hell of a party.

See: Feet Don't Fail Me, Domesticated Animal, The Evil Has Landed

7. Aguas - Mula

ULPkCFX.jpg

Queer dominican project Mula put out a playful full length thats super colorful, with hints of reggaeton, world music and electronic. The fans of Wednesday Campanella might find their sound quite endearing as well.

See: Diamentes, Retumba, Juego De Amor

6. Hot Thoughts - Spoon

Spoon_Hot_Thoughts.jpg

The production on this record is so good! All the spoon-isms are there but they also dip their toes in some fun electronic directions, cool echo effects and some killer hooks.

See: Hot Thoughts, Whisperi'lllistentohearit, First Caress

5. Arca - Arca

Arca_Arca_Cover_4000_010217.jpg-2-1487777367-compressed.jpeg

When this came out I knew the gays won 2017. Arcas phenominal, spacey, weird instrumental worlds are now backed by dramatic, dark, tragic opera-esque vocals. The songs are creepy but so captivating, I was actually shuffling with this being my #1 for a bit hehe.

See: Reverie, Desafio, Saunter(after piel :jonny:)

4. How Did We Get So Dark? - Royal Blood

Royal-Blood-How-Did-We-Get-So-Dark.jpg

Rock concerts are some of the most fun experiences in the world, It amplifies the adrenaline, the sex, the anarchy tenfold. Royal Blood truly capture that feeling in this record, where many bands especially currently can kind of be washed out by the heavy studio instrumentation. The duo kill it with 90% bass and drums and the best thing is at 34 minutes, it's snack sized.

See: Lights Out, How Did We Get So Dark, Hook Line and Sinker

3. DAMN. - Kendrick Lamar

Damn._Kendrick_Lamar.jpg

Kendrick after 2 certified classics on release really didn't have much to prove here, and that wasn't to his detriment. We see some fun lyrical flexing showing how very easy it is for him to be radio-ready. That aside, the album works well as reflection, both to where we stand today as a country and reflection to his career up until this point, in terms of content. The album is not necessarily chronological but sums itself quite nicely, with XXX serving like pent up frustration and Duckworth. So yea, dont listen to the backwards collectors edition, thats just weird.

See: XXX, Loyalty, DNA, Element

2. No Shape - Perfume Genius

9ed94a94.jpg

This album is hands down the most beautiful album of the year (to listen to). All of the instrumentation is gorgeous, the vocals are always sensual and delicate. The first half of the album feels like a state of bliss, with tracks like No Shape and Just Like Love, and ends steamy and sensual, tying it from the other worldly to something very mortal WMjJ0gn.gif

See: Wreath, No Shape, Die For You, Run Me Through

and  claiming the first double #1 on my year ends we have

1. Melodrama - Lorde

Lorde_-_Melodrama.png

Lorde comes to form in this record, serving a shockingly detailed depiction of being a female her age, and yet somehow being able to blanket coming of age for anyone. The anxiety of trying to find yourself when you and everyone and everything around you is moving at such a fast pace. The self-doubt, placing your selfworth in another. The selfishness of releasing yourself to your inhibitions and knowing hat its ok. And the theatre, comparing young love to timeless pieces of art, the fixation over things like parties, which teens really do fixate over. Melodrama really was the perfect title here.

See: Writer In The Dark, Homemade Dynamite, Supercut, Sober, Liability, The Louvre

Melodrama is a cute girl (65/100). It has some really high highs but some really terrible songs too.
