theblackestday Posted December 20, 2017 Author Posted December 20, 2017 (edited) 25. THE NATIONAL Sleep Well Beast INDIE ROCK Quote I don't have much to say about this? I guess I'm in the minority of people who haven't listened to The National prior to this album... but anyways I was kinda scalped on first listen based on the opening track alone. I've seen people claiming it's too dark and depressing to be an opener but I think it's just the perfect opener. Elsewhere, this whole album is pretty consistent and cohesive, I don't think I can single out any song. The usage of electronics could've been more interesting, but it's done well nonetheless. faves: Nobody Else Will Be There least faves: Turtleneck 24. JLIN Black Origami FOOTWORK Quote This album is not for everyone and it's definitely not something you'd listen to at just any time, but if you fail to at least recognize the fact that this album is immaculately produced and has a stellar usage of textures and percussion then I am so sorry sweetie... faves: 1%, Calcination least faves: Carbon 7 (161) 23. DEMI LOVATO Tell Me You Love Me POP / CONTEMPORARY R&B Quote Who would've thought that miss Demetria Devonne Lovato would actually a deliver a great body of work (this decade)? So Demi finally decided to delve into a soulful, R&B sound, and it pays off. The album is actually cohesive and consistent for the most part. It's not perfect, but who cares when we have the post-IDM ambient jam Only Forever, the Lana Del Rey-inspired indie rock balladry Cry Baby and the Aretha Franklin-ending combo of Concentrate/Hitchhiker? You also have the jazzy Ruin the Friendship which features an awesome bassline and the nu-disco banger Sexy Dirty Love, among others. This is miles ahead of her previous three efforts which all sucked outside of a few highlights. faves: Cry Baby, Only Forever, Lonelyleast faves: Sorry Not Sorry, Daddy Issues 22. GORILLAZ Humanz ELECTROPOP Quote I've been exposing myself with this update but just like with The National, Humanz was actually my first Gorillaz album (yikes). Most fans were disappointed by this, so thankfully I didn't have anything to be disappointed by cause I didn't have the disprivilege of comparing it to their previous work. Here's the thing, this album is quite a mess; it does feel more like a compilation or a playlist, the interludes contribute absolutely nothing, the deluxe is unnecessary and there's a couple of standard tracks you could easily get rid of, but besides that... this album is almost electropop perfection. It's just fun bops after bops. Almost every track contains features, and they're all from excellent artists who deliver great verses. The highlights are some of my favorites of the year. I acknowledge the fact that this wouldn't age very well (I'm already over it actually) but it's great for what is is/was now. faves: Charger, Sex Murder Partyleast faves: We Got the Power , Hallelujah Money 21. FOREST SWORDS Compassion ELECTRONIC / AMBIENT DUB Quote faves: The Highest Flood, Raw Language least faves: Border Margin Barrier, Arms Out Edited December 21, 2017 by theblackestday
Same Ol' Mistakes Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 (edited) Never expected Demi to be on your list. She really did that. And yes at you dragging Daddy Issues, it's overrated. Edited December 20, 2017 by Same Ol' Mistakes
Vxspertine Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 The National You need to get into Boxer, their best album Jlin Not an interlude being your favorite though Demi really did that didn't she? No comment on Gorillaz or Deforestation Swords
ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 20, 2017 ATRL Moderator Posted December 20, 2017 Demi kinda did that huh? The National's album didn't overwhelm me on first listen
World Eater Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 I have a soft spot for Forest Swords but I gotta say I enjoyed Engravings a biT more than Compassion. This is random but I saw him live with my friends a couple months ago and they had an iron with them (don't ask ) and him signing iT after the show was a big kii Anyway, Black Origami and Sleep Well Beast were really gewd too

Lazuli Posted December 21, 2017 Posted December 21, 2017 Sleep Well Beast is amazing And you got the worst track of the album right for once! Demi being on your list is a surprise!
Pink Matter Posted December 21, 2017 Posted December 21, 2017 Some interesting choices so far! King GIzzard, Priests, Blanck Mass, Sampha, and Gorillaz are my faves from your previous sets Didn't really care for Kelly, Jay Som, Laura Merling, Kllo, and I didn't listen to 4:44 (no Tidal and I didn't want to illegally download soooooo) And I've seen Demi on so many lists Maybe I should check it out? Also: omg what a flop
