FOUR TET New Energy MICROHOUSE Quote A lovely, soothing and meditative electronic record. The sound is very focused and minimalist, while not being one-dimensional, resulting in a beautifully composed body of work. It actually reminds me of Vespertine at times. 14 minutes ago, theblackestday said: 39. KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD Flying Microtonal Banana PSYCHEDELIC ROCK Quote So King Gizzard decided to release 5 albums this year, because why not. This album is the first, and it was recorded in quarter tone tuning. The concept behind this album, as its subtitle suggests, is the band's exploration into microtonal tuning. By definition, microtones are intervals smaller than a semitone, and it's most commonly used in middle eastern music, a clear influence on the sound of the album. So clearly, this is a quite ambitious and imaginative record, and it works. It manages to be strange and accessible at the same time. It's trance-inducing psychedelia, filled with catchy songwriting and rich instrumentation that is refreshing and groovy. 10 minutes ago, theblackestday said: 38. HYPERTEXT SuperSystem Vibe ELECTRONIC / PROG-POP Quote Yet another great album from them! It's dreamy and melodic with layers of acoustic instruments, vocal harmonies and industrial-tinged music; forming a new sound for the band and once again having an album that showcases a departure from it predecessor, all while restraining their distinctive signature and of course, the quality of the music. faves: Flashbacks, Icons, This Will Soon Be Overleast faves: Crime 5 minutes ago, theblackestday said: 37. SEVDALIZA ISON TRIP HOP / AVANT-POP Quote I was sooo shook when I discovered this. The production is spectacular and exactly the kind that I **** with most. But without a doubt, this album is flawed in many aspects (e.g. the unjustified length, the lack of memorable/strong hooks, no notable tempo changes), yet, the pros outweigh the flaws, so it remains a great debut. You get a bit of Portishead, FKA twigs and Lana Del Rey, but still in Sevdaliza's own unique way. It's dark and textured, it sets out a specific mood and succeeds in it, and it showcases Sevdaliza's huge potential and obvious talent. The Suspended Kid remains her best project tho. faves: Human, Hubris, Marilyn Monroeleast faves: Loves Way, When I Reside

The first King Lizard album was pretty decent, but then they started releasing too much and I just gave up and didn't come back to it Hypertext did THAT I skipped Jay's album because I didn't care enough to illegally download it And Sevdaliza I agree with everything you said except for her EP being better than the album Edited December 17, 2017 by Vxspertine

Vilppu Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 The 4:44 write-ups hits the nail right on the head, the album was surprisingly solid btw. Only listened to Sevdaliza once but I was really intrigued, will definitely get back to it and will probably listen to Four Tet because apparently I get wet whenever I see *sub-genre* house.

ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 17, 2017 ATRL Moderator Posted December 17, 2017 never got round to listening to all of 4:44 because TIDAL but lemme get to it sometime soon
World Eater Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 Flying Microtonal Banana was my favorite King Gizzard album this year but then again, Murder of the Universe was overly ambitious and not fully executed, Sketches was basically elevator music and I don't remember a single thing from Polygondwanaland

Tom Vercetti Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 I didn't expect to see Jay Z here. Full of surprises. The highlight is one of my faves too. Sevdaliza doesn't do much for me Microtonal is likely my favorite release from King Gizz still. Nuclear Fusion should've been a highlight.

Why not tho? It's pretty excellent + 4:44 is one of the best songs of the year I forgot to list highlights that would be the first four tracks and Nuclear Fusion
Eeveelution Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 Idk these except for Sevdaliza. No spotify no listen. Gonna assume that you calling Loves Way the worst was an unfortunate typo. :(
volition Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 Whew talent. Four Tet’s album was really nice, not a disappointment for me. Quarter tones are really interesting, my choir friends used to **** with the leader by singing quarter tones lower because it just sounds awful. As for Gizzard, that album + Murder of the Universe + Polygondwanaland were all really good, I’m a huge fan but dear god they have to slow down the output. 4.44 is so good and it gets too much undeserved hate on this website, definitely a huge difference from his ghastly Magna Carta. It’s a shame everyone had to pirate it. Ison is getting left off a lot of lists. To me it’s a nice album but it feels like someone going for a lot of genre vibes but without as much talent or ideas as those antecedents had. A little bit of style over substance there but still feels like a honourable mention to me.

I don't get the 4:44 hate at all either, probably just because it's Jay Z (and hip hop, ofc) *pretends to be shocked* Been noticing the lack of Ison; it deserves to be on more lists imo, especially considering this forum tends to stan for her "kind". and I get what you mean (and mostly agree), but I believe she has the talent, it just wasn't fully formed I guess?
Dessy Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 Poor Moonlight I think I'll check out SEVDALIZA base on your write-ups and that album cover.
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 18, 2017 ATRL Moderator Posted December 18, 2017 Didn't know anybody actually listened to 4:44 I thought it was all critics just doing it cause it made them look smart or w/e.

Little Dark Age Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 the unexpected king gizzard stanning love that album honestly don't know what to make of Ison, the songs I've heard have interesting concepts most but are poorly executed I kinda like her new non-album single tho 4:44 is good too
