Escape Posted December 30, 2017 Posted December 30, 2017 (edited) Arca kind of was better than UtooLongToSitThroughTopia so Still suprised to see it go this early, I legit thought it would be your AOTY or at least in the Top-5. Edited December 30, 2017 by Avariko

Flop fan Utopia and Paradise are meh, my least favorites along with Courtship After Laughter had some cute sings but it should noT be higher than Flutopia Hard Times being your least favorite and No Friend being one of your faves a mess!

And I'm a lot better, thank you for checking, it means a lot I need to re-visit After Laughter, it was cute but I didn't like it that much, I'm glad you enjoyed what your faves delivered though. Love Big Fish Theory, I wish more rappers tried something similar. Utopia I was not feeling and calling the title track a lowlight is mean. I'm glad to hear if you ever wanna talk know that I'm here! I wasn't feeling it that much on first plays initially but it grew on me immensely so I think you should give it some more tries. Pink Matter Posted December 30, 2017 Posted December 30, 2017 Interesting set Only really listened to Big Fish Theory (which is great!). Didn't really care for Utopia like that and I didn't really spend much time with Arca. Only listened to After Laughter once in full Hopefully 5-1 delivers

theblackestday Posted December 30, 2017 Author Posted December 30, 2017 (edited) I want to get this over with, so I'm posting the top 5 now I just want to clarify that the order is something I basically changed every other hour cause I love all of the albums in this top 5 almost equally, and deciding on an order was pretty hard. I'd consider all of them as my AOTY (especially the top 3, but all of them actually), but I had to make some choices, taking several minor things into account Edited December 30, 2017 by theblackestday
theblackestday Posted December 30, 2017 Author Posted December 30, 2017 5. KENDRICK LAMAR DAMN. HIP HOP Quote I was surprised to see the mixed reception for this one... and then I wasn't. Further proof of a deep generational chasm that divides ATRL into two camps; the twentysomething pop sophisticates with 15 to 20 years of top-shelf pop consumption to their name, and an unruly kid crew with ANOHNI avatars and tributes to Arca in their signatures. It's not that the latter generation is a lost cause entirely, but they've clearly never heard a "DAMN" — that is, they've never encountered production quite as distinctive as Kendrick's. "But I know Kendrick! Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe was the first single I bought!" First off, ask for a refund. And no, you don't know Kendrick Lamar, you know a very stilted and subdued version of the iconic performer. The Kendrick Lamar of "DAMN" is Kendrick as Kendrick is intended to sound. He very skillfully vacillates between a range of tones; there are bleeps, then bloops, then blips, then bleeps again. (And yes, that's how he's supposed to do it.) He's sultry. he's goofy. He sounds slightly absurd. He's fully engaged. He's expressive in ways that "technically superior" producers just aren't. He is brilliant. You have no idea how brilliant he is. favorite(s): Fear, Pride, XXX, Yah, Lust, Humble, DNA, Love, Element, Loyalty least favorite(s): God Spoiler
theblackestday Posted December 30, 2017 Author Posted December 30, 2017 4. ZOLA JESUS Okovi DARKWAVE / ART POP Quote Never having heard of Zola Jesus before, I came into this album not knowing what to expect from it or her; and oh wow, was I left shook. Okovi deals with personal and dark experiences, including the attempted suicide of her close friend. Those themes are accompanied by equally dark yet incredible production work that is both industrial and orchestral; you could mistake the album for a gothic Björk. Her soaring, powerful and heavily-reverbed voice complements the gorgeous, dark-toned arrangements. All of these feats, with the combination of her brilliant songwriting, strengthen the power and impact of Okovi. Easily one of my favorite albums of the year, and it still destroys me every time. favorite(s): Half Life, Veka, Ash to Bone, Witness, Remains, Wiseblood, Doma, Siphon, Exhumed least favorite(s): NMO Spoiler
Vxspertine Posted December 30, 2017 Posted December 30, 2017 She did that Also I just love the cover so much
theblackestday Posted December 30, 2017 Author Posted December 30, 2017 3. KELELA Take Me Apart ALTERNATIVE R&B / ELECTRONIC Quote It's genuinely astonishing how this album managed to get better with each listen, revealing more and more of its brilliance and complexity within its layers and attention to detail, backed by Kelela's superb songwriting and gorgeously distinctive voice. Take Me Apart is cutting edge, innovative R&B at its finest; but most importantly, it's an absolutely stunning debut in every damn way and aspect. Kelela further proves herself as, without a doubt, one of the very best in the game. favorite(s): Enough, Truth or Dare, Turn to Dust, Blue Light, Onanon, Waitin, Take Me Apart, Frontline, Bluff, Jupiter least favorite(s): S.O.S. Spoiler 2. FEVER RAY Plunge ELECTRO-TALENT Quote Plunge is Fever Ray's return after nearly nine years, and saying it was worth the wait would be a huge understatement. Scandinavian legend Karin Dreijer exceeded ever single one of my expectations and released an album that somehow managed to match, and even surpass, her brilliant debut. Plunge is full of in-your-face lyrical themes about desire, love, politics and exploration of Karin's queer identity. The density and mania of the electronic production, catchy hooks and Karin's extraordinary voice is everything I ever wanted but never knew I needed so badly. favorite(s): Red Trails, A Part of Us, Mustn't Hurry, An Itch, Wanna Sip, Mama's Hand, Falling least favorite(s): Plunge, To the Moon and Back Spoiler 1. SUSANNE SUNDFØR Music for People in Trouble ART POP / CHAMBER FOLK Quote Who would've thought that after releasing the greatest pop album of the milennium, Susanne Sundfør would come out with an equally brilliant masterpiece? Finishing this segment right here, cause nothing I will say will do this album justice; I'm going to let this speak for itself. favorite(s): Mantra, Reincarnation, Good Luck Bad Luck, The Sound of War, Music for People in Trouble, Bedtime Story, Undercover, No One Believes in Love Anymore, The Golden Age, Mountaineers least favorite(s): N/A Spoiler

Vxspertine Posted December 30, 2017 Posted December 30, 2017 Oh wow I didn't expect Susanne to be your #1 She deserves it though Kelegend Honestly, one of the biggest growers ever for me. Plunge is excellent but I still feel pretty indifferent towards it, I hope her vocals will grow on me eventually Overall loved your list, even though some choices were questionable and I will NOT forgive you for the BDKMV slander. Definitely took a lot of notes and will give all of the albums I missed a listen
Eeveelution Posted December 30, 2017 Posted December 30, 2017 A top 5! Kendrick is such a talent. Zola is a unique artist. Kelela revitalized the R&B genre. Fever Ray delivered an excellent comeback. Susanne has great gowns, beautiful gowns. Great countdown overall.
