theblackestday Posted December 22, 2017 Author Posted December 22, 2017 20. CHELSEA WOLFE Hiss Spun DOOM METAL Quote Chelsea Wolfe fully embraces her metal side with this album. She delivers bombastic instrumentation and production and stellar arrangements, creating an atmospheric, heavy, and dark sound throughout the album, and a hell of a captivating listen. The album is generally quite consistent, but there's too easy standouts for me: "Two Spririt" – the closest thing to a folk song on the album – with Chelsea's siren-like vocals over an acoustic guitar, is a spiritual experience. Then, the chaotic and intense "Scrape" follows it, featuring her best vocal performance. one of the most eargasmic album closers of all time. faves: Scrape, Two Spirit least faves: Particle Flux? 19. PROTOMARTYR Relatives in Descent POST-PUNK Quote This album executes perfectly whatever it's trying to achieve, from the fantastic production to everything else. The instrumentation feels super tight and clean – especially some of the brilliant guitar riffs. I live for guitar work that conveys emotion and it's done here successfully several times. The album manages to be diverse all while maintaining cohesion. This is more than a standard post-punk album, which is why it's the best album of the year in its genre imo. faves: Half Sister, Caitriona, My Children least faves: Don’t Go to Anacita 18. CHERRY GLAZERR Apocalipstick INDIE ROCK Quote Some could say this album is formulaic, but honestly who cares when it's so good, enjoyable and fun? There's tons of catchy hooks and awesome guitar playing. I love the badass attitude and edginess of this album and the incorporation of different styles. It's poppy but punky. So, yeah, I don't have much to say here. It's your classic indie rock album. faves: Apocalipstick, Only Kid on the Blockleast faves: Told You I'd Be With the Guys 17. SLOWDIVE Slowdive DREAM POP / SHOEGAZE Quote I sighed upon the first track on first listen for sounding like your typical, generic dream pop song + tragic vocals. But thankfully with repeated listens I fell more and more in love with this album, and no doubt everything that follows the opener is miles better. The songs are atmospheric and contain beautiful compositions and shoegazey rhythms. The fan-favorite Sugar for the Pill is a prime example of that. The lead single, Star Roving, is a classic shoegaze track. There's also the flawless Cocteau Twins-esque Don't Know Why and the haunting Radiohead rip-off Falling Ashes. But Go Get It is by far the standout of the album, being the closest thing to a post-rock song on the album, and a SOTY contender for me – I really wish they'd lean into that direction with their next album. To sum it up, Slowdive's comeback doesn't reinvent themselves, but instead continues delivering what they're best at – superb dream pop/shoegaze tunes. faves: Go Get Itleast faves: Slomo 16. (SANDY) ALEX G Rocket INDIE FOLK Quote faves: Judge, Brick, Horse, Bobby, Sportstar least faves: Guilty, Big Fish, Alina
Dom Posted December 22, 2017 Posted December 22, 2017 sugar for the pill is my fave on slowdive, because it's so calm and dreamy. that's all. xoxo

volition Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 Omg I love all of these albums Hiss Spun went into a great musical direction for her and it is such a glorious experience to listen to Protomartyr’s album was a highlight for post-punk in 2017 and it really delivered Apocalipstick is just pure fun and I agree that it’s not too groundbreaking but does it matter when it’s that enjoyable? Slowdive’s return nearly even lives up to their opuses and it could’ve been legacy-tarnishing but it wasn’t, it’s really great Rocket is such a lovely folk / alt-country album that’s moving and also still interesting musically to listen to only 1 of these albums did not make my list
