Labyrinth, XO Tour Llife (also on my imaginary list), Green Light, Yeah Right, Supermodel.... in hindsight 2017 had some pretty great tracks and you summed them up perfectly!

i heard this once and immediately put this in this list. i haven't heard it since and thus cannot comment much on its quality but guessing by the artist i'm sure my instincts were correct.

 

 

 

 

 

9 GALWAY GIRL ED SHEERAN

you know those people who list off their heritage to seem more worldly "i'm 1/64th german, 1/256th irish, 1/1024th australian", no GIRL STOP IT. STOP REELING OFF A LIST OF WHAT'S IN U LIKE THE INGREDIENTS ON A ****ING READY MEAL BECAUSE I AIN'T BUYING IT. well this is exactly what galway girl appeals too - a mass crowd who think they're a little irish (because EVERYONE thinks they're a little irish) and who can pick up on the banal references ed makes here because BEING IRISH IS ALL ABOUT PLAYING THE FIDDLE IN AN IRISH BAND AND ALL THAT ****. next up on ed's next album: he talks about falling in love with an asian girl who loves to get her nails done "all japanese-y"

as much as i dislike ed i think it's a bit cruel when people say he shouldn't sing this song bc no1 wants to hear an unattractive person discuss sex, but also because i think that misses the point that no1 should want to hear this anyway irrespective of the artist singing it. shape of you is the musical manifestation of a **** that has slowly made its way through the digestive system of the mainstream: taking various trends and influences and excreting something in the most banal way possible. also, remember when ed started out and he sang lyrics like “I sing and write my own tune and I write my own verse / Hell, don't need another word-smith to make my tune sell” and “And I won’t be a product of my genre / My mind will always be stronger than my songs are.” huh, about that.

 

 

6 WALK ON WATER EMINEM

you know when an artist who's past their prime has to cling onto the past to compensate for their current mediocrity? that's what it feels like eminem does on walk on water at the end when he exclaims "bitch i wrote stan", because even he knows that walk on water and its boring ass reflective lyrics, the way it treats beyonce like skylar grey and its embarrassing rhyming of "freezes" with "jesus" is not doing him any favours. still, i can't get mad at the song which kinda ended him. 

 

 

 

5 IT'S EVERYDAY BRO JAKE PAUL

for an artist who was introduced as a lone figure of authenticity in a sea of vapid pop music, ed sure does have the most gaping lack of originality out of anyone in the industry. perfect is a whole ****ing inception dream of unoriginality: a retread of his own song which, in itself, was a retread of let’s get it on, while simultaneously borrowing from unchained melody and even failing to be original in its status as a 2017 song with a quick lil beyonce remix. how u gonna be the most calculated person of the year in year in which taylor is releasing? 

 

 

 

2 STRIP THAT DOWN LIAM PAYNE

liam payne is so hilariously tasteless you kinda expect his videos to break out into a harlem shake at any moment. strip that down, among its many other flaws, is so embarrassingly dated – the musical equivalent of someone playing 3oh!3 at a house party even though everyone else moved on years ago. then there’s liam’s midas-like touch where he turns anything to corny, delivering lyrics like “you know i used to be in 1d” in a way you hope is ironic even though, deep down, you know it’s not. then there are those weirdly sleazy lyrics – the odd positing of liam as this suave sex symbol like a mother dressing her son up for a date, or just the fact that it reminds you of the relationship into which he was basically groomed.

yet, the worst part of strip that down is not even present in the music, as bad as it is, but in the knowledge that someone this tasteless and clueless is now officially in charge of raising a child.

1 NEW MAN ED SHEERAN

you know, i think it’s a real shame ed is dragged so much for his appearance, because i think he has an equally repulsive personality which is just as deserving of ridicule.

new man comes in a long line of post-drake obsessive songs which fixate over some meanie, disloyal girl who is clearly the paragon of evil because she doesn’t like ed. that’s right, ed, deny a woman of her autonomy and worth just because she’s moved on with someone else, because, ultimately, her value is determined by how nice she is to you, you cretin.

this is but one of many grossly disgusting things about this song. we hear iteration number seven-hundred (then again, who’s counting? maybe we can use some of those symbols on your album covers ed, you calculating bastard) of ed playing the innocent everyman, the nice guy, while that meanie woman is merely a vapid slave to the system because she’s “hitting the gym and keeping up with kylie and kim.” you know what’s really vapid, ed? it’s mocking women who don’t fit into your own shallow worldview. this girl may watch the kardashians, but I BET SHE HASN’T RIPPED OFF SIA AND TLC IN THE SAME ****ING SONG.

if this weren’t enough, innocent, no-wrong-doing ed decides to expose more of his revolting, judgemental victim complex by shaming the titular new man: “he's got his eyebrows plucked and his arsehole bleached” and “wears a man bag on his shoulder but i call it a purse.” that’s right, ed, let’s shame her new man with this deep-rooted misogyny, because the most hilariously embarrassing and belittling thing a man can do is by having female traits. **** you ed, you misogynist. he may have a man bag, BUT I BET HE DOESN’T LOOK LIKE A PLASTIC TROLL TOY THAT WAS LEFT TOO CLOSE TO THE RADIATOR.

in essence, new man really is the culmination of everything putrid about ed sheeran and his brand. ed was introduced to the industry as an emblem of authenticity, as the so-called humble, genuine guy in an industry of vapid artists. in reality, ed is just as, if not, more vapid than his peers, and his subliminal messages which reek of deep-rooted misogyny are far more noxious than any episode of keeping up with the kardashians could ever hope to be. ed sheeran is really the artist for the middle of the road person who is “genuine” enough to hate instagram and is yet still vapid enough to think that people who don’t align with his worldview are inferior. he’s humble and average, but he regularly assumes the moral high-ground over others. he’s genuine and kind and treats women right, and yet he dichotomises them depending on their worth to him. he’s anti-mainstream and is yet everything to do with it. his name is ed sheeran - he is banal, derivative, self-victimising, calculated, bitter, hypocritical, completely lacking in self-awareness and he made the worst song of this year.

oh, and he’s ugly.
