bluth Posted December 16, 2017 Author Posted December 16, 2017 20 - 11 20 DIVING WOMAN JAPANESE BREAKFAST soft sounds from another planet was an amazing step for japanese breakfast to take to showcase a more creative side of her artistry. the album may be a little top heavy, which either speaks about a general trailing off of quality towards the end or, alternatively, may speak to how wonderfully immersive the opening songs are. psychopomp was about enshrining the past in a beautiful way, and diving woman presents an ethereal, spacey future 19 ANYMORE GOLDFRAPP call me basic but i guess i'm a sucker for when goldfrapp nails her honda-advert-meets-popjustice-forum sound. anymore really sounds amazing, the hypnotic hook and the growling engine of the production ascending to a climax it never truly reaches, pushing its listeners to a point where they can't wait anymore 18 EVERYTHING NOW ARCADE FIRE honestly, i LIVE for how messy this album and general campaign was - everything now didn't so much unfurl as a glamorous red carpet to the disco than it did roll from under the cubicle like a rogue toilet roll. remember when they were using fidget spinners as promo? a ****ing cackle. but the album had, uh, a great moment, and how can you not live for an indie darling deciding to pay homage to abba 17 LMK KELELA lmk really showcases three of kelela's amazing qualities: her perceptiveness when it comes to modern trends, her creativity to turn these into her own, unique vision, and, thirdly, her vocals which so masterfully command melody. lmk may lack the instant PUNCH-factor that rewind had, but take me apart really was about the album, where each song underscores something within a wider context. kelela is more than capable of delivering punches, all you have to do is let her know 16 2 GOOD 2 BE TRUE NITE JEWEL pop music can often be a commodity that transports it to a more wonderful place. 2 good 2 be true sounds like the exact kind of blissful, evocative pop that takes us to another place, but it more so captures a detachment from reality when something is too good to be true, making for something which sounds like a musical daydream 15 ROCK N ROLL STAR KERO KERO BONITO maybe i'm more biased towards things which sound like they could piss off a load of rock stans, but kkb's cover of oasis, delivered in their usual bubblegum vernacular, adds a layer of poignancy to the lyric "tonight, i'm a rock and roll star." it sounds like one of their most sombre moments, capturing a heart-warming moment where a person in a bad place has to believe in themselves to survive 14 BLACK HOLE CHARLY BLISS charly bliss know exactly how to nail that petulant-sounding, 00s pop punk sound so well. on black hole they use that style with an equally-angsty theme of a breakup and paranoia over one's own dysfunctionality - "was i insane?" it makes for something which takes us back to our /r/blunderyears angst phase except it feels so much more... acceptable 13 THE SOUND OF WAR SUSANNE SUNDFOR susanne has such an ear for melodrama and she manages to make something haunting here – towards the end we hear the sound of planes flying and faint explosions in the back like bombs being dropped on a war-torn world. good artists can narrate their pain, but great artists can inflict it on a listener, and susanne manages to make her pain feel apocalyptic 12 ROOKIE RED VELVET red velvet possibly make some of the most ebullient songs in modern pop, in a way which is often unpredictable and disarming, take rookie - a weird amalgamation of retro surf-rock influences and a chorus which feels like a shot of every e-number that's ever existed, straddling a fine line between the darker, obsessive lyrics and its general bubblegum presentation. it's a song that sounds strange at first, until u find yourself listening to it over and over, at which point you have to wonder why you ever doubted their instincts 11 RHESUS NEGATIVE BLANCK MASS rhesus negative is more than just a song: it feels like a moment. the build up to it on world eater is ominous and almost threatening, giving a feeling that the bared teeth on the album cover are about to leap from the screen and rip your head off. the song itself is an epic, nine minute onslaught which is possibly one of the most invigorating moments to come from this year, each moment we spend with the song drawing us further in as we realise there's no going back linkz Spoiler

ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 16, 2017 ATRL Moderator Posted December 16, 2017 I'm really shocked at your Kelela pick, why LMK over others? and why not Machinist? Every single other song is Mess we definitely have a lot of overlap on our lists...
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 16, 2017 ATRL Moderator Posted December 16, 2017 So glad you gave Selena Gomez a top 10 position.
Tom Vercetti Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 Rhesus negative is pretty huge I agree. LMK alway's been about that life, albeit on the safe side. Most single worthy for sure. I love how Diving Woman sets the mood and it really works well as an introduction. Bring on the top 10 (not exactly sure all the names who will be on there)~
theblackestday Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 Rhesus Negative, The Sound of War, LMK

Red Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 Pretty much hit the nail on the head with "Everything Now". I just wish it stuck with me in the way it, seemingly, stuck with you.

SupremeGoddess Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 Will Lust for Life be your rightfully #1 album?
World Eater Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 One of these songs is at the exact same place on my list Everything Now's campaign was a total mess I get what they were going for but it was annoying as hell. The album's title track still bangs tho
Vilppu Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 Diving Woman, The Sound of War, LMK Rookie was Red Velvet's most tolerable title track this year but it still got old quickly for me, they kinda lost. Anymore is excellent even if formulatic for them and Everything Now was the only decent thing from that horrible album.
Little Dark Age Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 mourning sound is excellence whew deadly valentine is amazing too equalizer and where this flower blooms
Little Dark Age Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 nnn one of these songs is in the same spot on my year end. although it'll probably jump up two with the final week of the year
smholiv Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 Kelela had an incredible album filled with great picks but honestly? I agree with you in picking LMK. There's something about that that just felt like the perfect way to represent the album. It's honestly an incredible song all around (and my #2 of the year!) Nice JPN Breakfast pick. I loved Machinist the most but for the most part the album was enjoyable. I'm surprised but really happy to see Rookie this high on your list! I loved your description for it, part of the reason why Red Velvet are arguably the most ambitious group currently in K-Pop. They give even the most Pitchforkian of Western indie acts a run for their money. if only people could get past the fact that they're Asian
Lazuli Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 Quote everything now didn't so much unfurl as a glamorous red carpet to the disco than it did roll from under the cubicle like a rogue toilet roll. fsdfds I cackled HARD Diving Woman, LMK, Anymore and The Sound of War
TheWayWeWere Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 yaaaaaaaaaas stan for Anymore still gets me LMK making it amazing bop
Pedro Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 WAIT. Goldfrapp are still making music? I HONESTLY didn't know!
Eeveelution Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 Diving Woman isn't my #1 fav from Soft Sounds but it's a really interesting opener/ I would never have guessed she'd make a song like that after hearing Psychopomp. I totally agree about Anymore, it's kinda one of their best singles when you think about it. I liked a couple of Nite Jewel songs last year but she completely slipped by me this year, is the album worth listening to?
