50 COLOUR OF WATER ROSE ELLINOR DOUGAL

the opening to stellular is a real cute piece of scandipop in which rose ellinor dougal effortlessly makes the descriptive lyrics, which would probs sound boring in another context, work well, creating a song which truly glimmers with the flickering colours of water

 

 

 

 

 

49 BOY K.I.D FT. CUPCAKKE 

one of the last things i thought i would hear in 2017 would be a cupcakke feature on a pop rock song and have it sound so good, but the reason this works so well is that it feels like a true collaboration, where the song's theme permits cupcakke to be her usual explicit self, thus allowing the song to make sense. and it bops too 

 

 

 

 

 

48 CHANEL FRANK OCEAN

i think chanel is a testament to frank's power as a narrator and how he can often make his aimless ramblings sound effortlessly poetic, and he plays on the trope of dropping fashion houses and general materialism into an urban song into a metaphor on bisexuality

 

 

 

 

 

47 ON THE LEVEL MAC DEMARCO

this old dog may have been a bit of a snooze in places but it was something of a pleasant nap for me, on the level sounding like some comforting lounge music played in some swanky apartment while the sun sets and the lights of the city begin to flicker in the darkness  

 

 

 

 

 

46 DIE 4 YOU PERFUME GENIUS

while this album wasn't my fave, it has its moments of warmth and tenderness which feel so right, especially die 4 you which is essentially a homage to sade. originally i thought this was a really cute song about commitment until i found out it's about erotic asphyxiation, which slightly ruined the vibe but u can't fault him for making strangling sound romantic 

 

 

 

 

 

45 ROSE-COLORED BOY PARAMORE

as a miserable mother****er i really relate to this song and its lyrical message of telling someone to shut up and stop being so damn optimistic, but it's carried well by paramore's modern pop stylings which they have so managed to perfect 

 

 

 

 

 

44 RAINGURL YAEJI

i think it was probably an astute move of yaeji to introduce her more atmospheric and mellow material first and then be able to catch everyone off-guard with something that felt as though it had much more personality, raingurl basically encompassing that feeling we've all had from time to time where we're drunk and we think we can make it rain with our overdrafts

 

 

 

 

43 COLDER THAN ICE POND

the weather kinda flickers by like a series of news reports on the general mundanity of life, but pond turn those moments into pop bliss, especially on colder than ice where they turn the use of meth into an infectious ass slice of 80s-inspired pop music, replete with squealing sax solo 

 

 

 

 

 

42 TRASH PEOPLE CHERRY GLAZERR

i kinda wish more of this album was more like this. cherry glazerr play on tropes of the glamorous rock n roll lifestyle and make it sound irreverent and truthful, with confessions of wearing the same underpants a few days in a row and having your bedroom smell like an ash tray. in some odd way, being trashy hasn't sounded so fun and glamorous

 

 

 

 

 

41 STICKY SITUATION QUIN

this cute ass ep is something i'd recommend to anyone who is a fan of the internet and (possibly) kaytranada. quin combines a pretty trendy mix of hip hop/r&b/electronic/pop, making for a song that sounds cool but, effortlessly so.

on future politics, austra demonstrates her ability to make pop music that occupies a vast, melodramatic space though its combination of soaring, quasi-operatic vocals with deep, brooding instrumentals. the song title is a grand statement that's not only delivered lyrically, but is emphasised by its presentation

 

 

 

 

38 WOMAN KESHA

as a survivor of abuse, few things have been more inspiring this year than hearing kesha's triumphant return. amidst its nuanced messages, woman offers something other than a statement on female autonomy - it's an empowerment song that doesn't rely on superlatives because its central message is a pure embodiment of power in itself: i'm a mother****ing woman.  

 

 

 

37 WEIGHED DOWN THE HORRORS

v is a dense, maximal album, but it uses its musical stylings in a way which underscores vastness rather than claustrophobia. at six and a half minutes, weighed down is one of the album's larger statements, a cavernous epic which - in spite of its lyrics - rises gradually, to eventually become weightless

it's true that rina uses "throwback" (shuddering as i type the thought that my childhood music is now throwback) in a way which is charming, but that slightly undermines that, at the core of this ep, is a heart which has great pop instincts which would flourish irrespective of style

it's amazing to think that pain is probably one of the more concise statements on a deeper understanding, but, perhaps, it's one of the most powerful ones. adam understands the power of deep, thoughtful and ponderous - often silent - moments in which our emotions can manifest the most, the pain echoing through wailing guitars after the vocals end, and the emotion reverberating in the silence that follows

the latest addition to this list, ponyboy is just noise sophie and it's all over the place with random housey interludes amidst the distorted, bludgeoning bass but it's amazing and everything u could really wish from her 

 

 

 

 

 

32 PARADISE S.E.S

often when attempting a comeback, older acts can either stay true to their retro context and sound dated, or try and update themselves and be down with the kids. s.e.s did neither of those things, and paradise sounds excellent. those retro ass synths are perfect and remind me of something you'd hear the credits for mario party or something, making for something that sounds celebratory - fitting for their return

 

 

 

31 FRIEND ZONE THUNDERCAT

while i kinda dislike the whole memeing of the "friend zone" by the straights because it implies that "just being friends" with a girl is a terrible thing, thundercat manages to animate this idea with his usual irreverance and humour, self-deprecating winks like "i'd rather play mortal kombat anyway" capturing the general charm of thundercat's work
