World Eater Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 did I really spell Jessie Ware like that nn ready for the album list tho!
bluth Posted December 20, 2017 Author Posted December 20, 2017 50 - 41 50 AT WHAT COST GOLDLINK goldlink occupies this curious space between being deservedly and undeservedly slept on, and i think at what cost showcase a good reason for both arguments. there are big bops here that deserved to be bigger (i don't have to mention the name crew to specify which) along with some other songs which are giving me bargain bin kaytranada but it's kaytranada nonetheless so i'm a sucker for that + i'm still gonna buy it. it's a cute album with some enjoyable moments, but there's definite room for improvement! best sings: crew, have you seen that girl? 49 FEEL INFINITE JACQUES GREENE jacques greene perhaps performs to the same audience as many modern ambient, electronic acts, but he separates himself by making music which is much closer to house + has a bigger sense of danceability. there are some more ambient and pensive moments here but the album's best moments, for me, are the parts where we're indulged in our deepest wishes and given straight up b0ps, which alos feel like the place where the artist is most at home best sings: feel infinite, real time 48 GODFATHER WILEY when honorary titles in music can sometimes feel so forced and unearned, it's nice to here something where the title of the godfather feels truly earned. however, it's not an album which clings to reputation for a sense of impression, wiley manages to deliver wall-to-wall grime bops which stand just as well on their own irrespective of the name behind them best sings: speakerbox, u were always pt.2 47 AZD ACTRESS azd is an album which makes electronic music that feels so implicitly visual and atmospheric, creating arresting, futuristic soundscapes which recall the classic works of its genre from the 90s by the likes of leftfield and the orb. its sound, combined with the length, may get a little heavy at times, but, nonetheless, it's a piece of work which feels lush and somewhat inspired best sings: x22rme, blue window 46 GOOD NATURE TURNOVER in a year in which real estate may have let us down slightly - although saying that i still put them above this - good nature is an album which delivers that irresistible, pretty jangle pop which doesn't attempt to achieve anything other than visceral pleasure. this could be more consistent, but songs like sunshine type demonstrate that turnover have a pretty good understanding of how to nail summery jangle pop best sings: sunshine type, what got in the way 45 LOVE WHAT SURVIVES MOUNT KIMBIE saying this as a huge fan of mount kimbie's first two albums, this was probably the first time i felt slightly let down by them, though that may have been more indicative of my expectations. nonetheless, in a genre which can sometimes feel unambitious, mount kimbie made something that felt like a real, conscious artistic step for them in creating an album in which they sounded more like a band, which was a decision i can always appreciate even if i didn't get another carbonated. still, there are some great songs on here which draw from their classic sound best sings: marilyn, audition 44 FUTURE POLITICS AUSTRA i'm not entirely sure what's political about this album but i'm probs being dumb, but - if it were an album inspired by modern politics - i guess it's nice that austra made something that sounded... optimistic. i guess the real draw is the album's vernacular of vast, melodramatic pop, which combines brooding, pulsating instrumentals with soaring, quasi-operatic vocals to make something that's enjoyable without having to dive into the message best sings: i love you more than you love yourself, angel in your eye 43 SEASON HIGH LITTLE DRAGON this album came as a welcome surprise to me. i think little dragon are a band who take themselves a lot less seriously than what most people would think, and i think this shows on season high which feels like a whimsical experimentation with different sounds in the pursuit of just making enjoyable bops. there are some great results of the experimentation: push, which is essentially a direct homage to inner city and basically tailor-made for gays, as well as other bops which feel more contemporary like high which is essentially their own take on nao best sings: push, celebrate 42 THE AGE OF ANXIETY PIXX i would have placed this higher if it weren't for the fact that i only discovered it, like, a week ago, lol. and, despite its placing here, it's definitely an album i would say is underrated in a sense, where pixx gives us a pretty nice selection of synth pop which is kinda eccentric in places, while keeping one eye firmly grounded on the basic principles of making pop music that's enjoyable on a visceral level best sings: romance, waterslides 41 TI AMO PHOENIX i think at one point during this year i was feeling some slighT withdrawal symptoms from some straight up bops and that's essentially what phoenix dropped to us like a care package in the middle of the year. it's a solid album all round - with the bigger, obvious moments that everyone will stan like j-boy, but i think, overall, it's a pretty consistent and concise album which kept us going best sings: tuttifrutti, j-boy
TheWayWeWere Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 welp, didn't heard any of them, I think I'll listen AZD and The Age of Anxiety in future based on your writings
and.y Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 Haven't heard those albums, besides Ti Amo by Phoenix. A solid album.
bluth Posted December 20, 2017 Author Posted December 20, 2017 40 - 31 40 SILVER EYE GOLDFRAPP goldfrapp didn't necessarily give us something new, but she gave us something equally satisfying which reminded us of the best part of goldfrapp's career, making for an album that dives into a few different styles while successfully managing to sound pretty coherent and self-contained. the highlights include the straight up, roaring car advert bops anymore and systemagic, but the pensive moments like tigerman and moon in your mouth are pretty great too best sings: anymore, systemagic 39 POPPY.COMPUTER POPPY poppy operates on so many levels of irony you're not entirely sure as to what she's truly trying to say, is she making a statement, is she being deliberately statement-less? but once you shrug all that off you reach an album which is pretty successful at what it does, delivering some solid pop moments which simultaneously play on different tropes which reflect technology/vapid pop in a way which may be intentional. or not best sings: interweb, fuzzy 38 IN MIND REAL ESTATE in mind may have not stacked up to real estate's previous work and listening to them may feel... a little more dubious now, but in mind still bears the hallmarks of some of real estate's best work. it's not necessarily an album which presents something new or moves in an exciting direction, but that's never been something we've demanded of pretty, simplistic jangle pop best sings: stained glass, holding pattern 37 PROCESS SAMPHA sampha didn't really benefit much from the fact that process dropped at the beginning of the year, that precarious period where - unless your album is really wig-snatching - it tends to be forgotten in the way-by over time. nonetheless, process was a fine album, if not a little boring in places, but it demonstrated that sampha could truly stand on his own without "featured" preceding his name, delivering some particularly stunning moments in plastic 100c best sings: plastic 100c 36 UTOPIA BJORK maybe being the miserable person i am i was always destined to prefer vulnicura to utopia, but, while there are a few moments i adore on utopia, i think i was expecting this to be a more fully-realised execution of a utopia in bjork's vision. there are moments which deliver this - arisen my senses is a stunning introduction to the alien, zen garden we expect utopia to partake in, but then there are also so many dull moments on this album which border on self-parody where bjork's just kinda wailing over some weird tempo beat (insert miranda priestly - groundbreaking.gif). granted, there are good moments but this could have benefited from more editing. okay u can drag me now madonnas best sings: losss, arisen my senses 35 THIS OLD DOG MAC DEMARCO this album may have been a snooze but it was a comforting snooze at that - like a good ass nap. this old dog showcases a songwriter not necessarily stepping into new territory, but refining what he already knows and at which he's already accomplished, something i think which is visibly self-aware not only in the title of the album but in the self-deprecating humour "uh oh, looks like i'm seeing more of my old man in me." it's a very warm and comforting album which is sometimes the best thing i can ask of an album. best sings: on the level, still beating 34 RAINBOW KESHA i think hearing kesha release again was possibly the most satisfying thing to come out of this year. despite its obvious triumph, rainbow is a nice album to boot - which doesn't hurt - which continues in the vein of many atrl'd faves going down a more "authentic" route, except kesha's feels (by far) the most effortless and authentic because she probs is the most effortless and authentic. rainbow really tells a story of survival, though, where kesha, having been exiled in pop wilderness for so long, finds her way back. the new moments are grounded by the imagination and whimsy of kesha's old self which is perhaps why this feels so authentic, culminating in the final track where kesha finally leaves in a spaceship where we feel, after being lost for so long, kesha is finally home. best sings: woman, spaceship, praying 33 SATURATION II BROCKHAMPTON probably rap's current flavour du jour, saturation ii doesn't necessarily coast on hype because there are quite a few fantastic moments on this - bolstered by the fact that it clearly doesn't take itself seriously (just look at that adorable - smile on the cover) - which is nice when so much music can feel so self-absorbed and a e s t h e t i c. this would probs be higher if i spent more time with it, but it definitely sets up brockhampton to (i hope) blow up more in the future! best sings: gummy, queer 32 HOT THOUGHTS SPOON spoon came into a year which was sitting under the ominous shadow of 2016 and delivered something which felt refreshingly fun and whimsical. hot thoughts gave us something that felt pertinently light-hearted, from the straight up bops on shotgun or the inflections of jazz on the title track. that said, it feels a little inconsistent in places, and most of the album was overshadowed by the title track. cute tho! best sings: hot thoughts, do i have to talk you into it 31 ASH IBEYI i guess ibeyi and their label as world music underlines why ash feels so welcome in today's climate - an album which feels so wide, inclusive and holistic in its approach - but i think it may slightly undermine that, labels aside, ibeyi made an album which felt so pure and elegant in its portrayal of, well, emotions. they use harmonies in a way which signals solidarity and unity, the vocals feel unfiltered, making for an album which delivered a message that was just as elegant as it feels pertinent. best sings: i wanna be like you, transmission/michaelion

World Eater Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 Some great picks (Process, Utopia, Saturation II, Hot Thoughts, Ti Amo, Love What Survives), some I didn't really care about (Poppy, This Old Dog, Ash, Feel Infinite) and some I haven't listened to yet but plan to (AZD, Good Nature). Nice update(s)
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 20, 2017 ATRL Moderator Posted December 20, 2017 Glad people are finally coming around to Pixx!
Wicked Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 Process was overrated to me, personally. Ibeyi, Mac
Playa Playa Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 Right, Wiley is the Godfather! Not prepared for the inevitable hate Brockhampton will face for being the current flavour du jour, as you put it, because they really do have great stuff.
Penk Posted December 21, 2017 Posted December 21, 2017 The first time I heard Light the Night Up I couldn't stop laughing poor girl, I need to stop by her house down the street and make her get her career back on track. I've loved every Goldfrapp album before this, but I just couldn't get into this one. There's only so many times you can make the same album Poppy/Sampha/Kesha are cute. SAT II is legit amazing, just such a refreshing album for rap this year.
Tom Vercetti Posted December 21, 2017 Posted December 21, 2017 I wish Goldlink's album was as hot as its singles. I heard a couple of songs from Turnover but never gave the album a chance. AZD, Process, Sat 2 The Utopia highlights are on point~

Allstar Posted December 21, 2017 Posted December 21, 2017 I see you're saving Jessie Ware for a higher spot, nice. :eyes:
TheWayWeWere Posted December 21, 2017 Posted December 21, 2017 Silver Eye Utopia is such a dissapointment there's some great songs, but overall - Rainbow such a great comeback
Uncatena Posted December 21, 2017 Posted December 21, 2017 oh wow, taste Feel Infinite was beautiful, need to relisten to it AZD, Love What Survives, Future Politics, Ti Amo, Silver Eye, Rainbow, Ash, Process, Hot Thoughts and Utopia a LIST.
SLIME Posted December 21, 2017 Posted December 21, 2017 Omg so.... I'm probably never gonna listen to those Ed songs but ur descriptions pretty much mean I don't have to now so thanks. Glad some of us can be tasteful about our Irish heritage <3 Idk as many of these as I should but ayy for us having the same Spoon highlights. I have my issues with Brockhampton but ya they do represent something nice + I'm excited to see where they can take it + we agree about Utopia, I DO respect the mission and there's parts I enjoy but it's too much and too little at the same time. respectable position
