Zay Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 Trouble Adjusting from the Miya EP is great. EP 2 and RINA are excellent
ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 23, 2017 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 23, 2017 I've got ten album HMs so I'll do 5 now and 5 in a bit. Unranked.
Uncatena Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 yaeji came through with that EP, MØs was just okay. Roots is fantastic tho
ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 23, 2017 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 23, 2017 UNORIGINAL'S BEST OF 2017 2017's Best Albums Honourable Mentions Part One Yellow Days Is Everything Okay in Your World? Reminded me of an edgy George Ezra in a good way. I liked the psychedelic feel that came through sometimes and the guitar work was pretty nice too. Shame I didn't listen to it as much as I wanted to otherwise it probably could've snatched a low top twenty position on my actual list. Highlights - A Bag of Dutch, Lately I listen here SZA CTRL The future of neo-soul/R&B did that with CTRL. This is such a damn good album and it was the first mixtape/album release from SZA that really grabbed me and for very good reason. There's a fantastic mix of slower, smoother cuts and the more upbeat stuff like Doves in the Wind and The Weekend. If I hadn't let myself get addicted to a few songs and actually played the whole album more it could've been on my list but alas. The best song on here by a mile is the opener, Supermodel. Highlights - Supermodel, The P*ssy Song, Prom, Go Gina, Broken Clocks listen here VÉRITÉ Somewhere In Between A really nice indie/alt-pop debut from VÉRITÉ. Deals with some darkish themes on some darkish production. Nice singing and nice lyrics and not really much to fault here. A decent listen if you're into the tumblrina girls. Highlights - When You're Gone, Floor, Somewhere In Between, Freedom of Falling listen here Laura Marling Semper Femina A really nice folk-rock album from Laura Marling. I was hooked on it for like the first two weeks after it came out but then I let it get behind me unfortunately (and wrongfully because it's really damn good). A lot of my HMs are albums that I listened to but didn't really pay enough attention to to justify a place on my actual top twenty and this is probably the greatest injustice to come of this. Highlights - Soothing, Wild Fire, Nothing, Not Nearly listen here Arcade Fire Everything Now I'd like to pretend this is in the wrong section and I actually meant to put it in the dishonourable mentions but I did genuinely enjoy this for a while after it came out. I forced myself to buy into the failed FJM-lite image they were attempting to go for and apart from the first part of Infinite Content I didn't consider anything to be atrocious on the album. The more I listened to it though the more I realised it wasn't all that. Apart from a couple decent songs on Everything Now, it's a pretty middling album but I couldn't just pretend I didn't ever enjoy it so that's why it's here. Highlights - Everything Now, Electric Blue, Put Your Money on Me, We Don't Deserve Love listen here I mean... do you really want to? I'll do the other five in a bit. I actually quite liked the next five so the writeups might be a bit longer but they just about didn't make it into the top twenty.

theblackestday Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 Poor Laura but a reasonable case Surprised SZA didn't make it

ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 23, 2017 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 23, 2017 UNORIGINAL'S BEST OF 2017 2017's Best Albums Honourable Mentions Part Two Paloma Faith The Architect Good woke pop with some atrocious mastering. A nice mix of 'retro'-sounding songs and more modern productions that work relatively well together. Katy Perry could never. Highlights - The Architect, Guilty, WW3 Price of Fame listen here Kesha Rainbow I wasn't expecting Kesha music this year and I also wasn't expecting very good Kesha music. Rainbow is really really good and sounds like a mature, authentic evolution (can I even call it that? it's so drastic it's not really subtle enough to be an evolution) that works commendably well. Miley Cyrus could never. It was hanging around at the bottom of my top twenty but it got shunted out towards the end of the year. Highlights - Bastards, Hunt You Down, Boogie Feet, Old Flames (Can't Hold a Candle to You), Spaceship listen here Daughter Music from Before the Storm Only Daughter could release a primarily instrumental album and end up on my Honourable Mentions list. Not to Disappear was one of my favourite albums of 2016 and Music from Before the Storm felt like a(n only slightly) watered down, still very Daughter-esque album. Glass is a gorgeous instrumental piece and A Hole in the Earth is stunning. Highlights - Glass, Burn it Down, I Can't Live Here Anymore, Voices, A Hole in the Earth listen here Demi Lovato Tell Me You Love Me Excellent GRAMMY-chasing music from Demi and probably her most confident, assured album. It's R&B-y, soulful and poppy and it all (mostly) works. Some of the fan favourites (Only Forever, Daddy Issues) I'd consider duds but they work well on the album and make sense so I can appreciate them still. Lil Wayne lays down an actually good verse that works on the song and some of the songs towards the back end of the album are really really good. If only Concentrate didn't have the slave line. Demi's closers are usually very emotionally powerful (Father (my favourite Demi song), Warrior and For the Love of a Daughter, and whilst Hitchhiker isn't powerful in the same way, it's still an excellent end to the album. Highlights - Sexy Dirty Love, Lonely, Games, Hitchhiker listen here JAY Z 4:44 My personal favourite woke rap/ conscious hip-hop album of the year. Kendrick could never. If Jay wasn't trying to make TIDAL happen this would definitely have been on my top twenty. @theblackestday convinced me to listen to it without really doing much except putting it on his Best Of (and not even that high) and it's really really really good. No ID's production is brilliant, the samples work amazingly well, Jay's lyrics are conscious and relevant to himself, his situation and society today and it all just works amazingly together. Stop trying to make TIDAL happen. Please. Still haven't heard the deluxe tracks because TIDAL but eh. Highlights - Kill Jay Z, The Story of O.J., 4:44, Family Feud, Legacy listen to most of it here yeah I said it man, **** TIDAL
ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 23, 2017 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 23, 2017 aaaaaaand that's me done until the 26th going on some kind of Christmas break but I'll still reply and stuff. I think my top twenty'll be pretty predictable but you can still guess if you want
