ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 21, 2017 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 21, 2017 #1 Fleet Foxes Third of May / Ōdaigahara Spoiler I could honestly write so much about this song and I'll probably end up writing a mini essay on it because I can't control myself. I kind of knew Fleet Foxes before Third of May and Crack-Up but not exactly well so when I listened to this song for the first time I wasn't really sure what to expect. What I certainly wasn't expecting was my favourite single of 2017. Third of May begins right in the middle of the storm, so to speak: there's no instrumental buildup or indication the song is starting - it just starts. Being bombarded with all of the song's instrumentation right from the very start is full-on but it's also beautiful. The percussion, the vocals, the guitars all together perfectly dragging the listener straight in. There's no in or out or enticing you in, right from the very start you're entirely captivated by the energy and complex allure. Robin Pecknold's vocals are incomparable to anyone I know of and they work so stunningly well on the song it's unreal. The lyrics are also incredibly effective and very typically folksy in the Fleet Foxes way; there're metaphors and similes and dates and it feels so personal it's like a nine-minute long diary entry we've been allowed incredibly personal access to. The song simmers for a bit then before exploding. It's incredible. I honestly have no words for how much I love the emotion and the sheer beauty of this part of the song. It's as if Robin's emotions have been translated into music and this is the output. It feels untamed and unspeakably good. (I'm trying to wrap up now) There's then some more singing and more perfectness and then the three-minute outro to the song which is a string piece which is also perfect. Every instrument is perfect in its place and the song fades into nothingness but it feels perfect in doing so. I adore this song, kind of to the point where I don't know how to explain how or why. It's just perfect. This is a mess and I know it is but Third of May is the best single of 2017 by such a margin it's incredible. To think there's not been a song that tops this for me when this has been out since March is insane. I can't recommend it enough. Sorry for being a mess listen here

theblackestday Posted December 22, 2017 Posted December 22, 2017 (edited) Nnn I was lowkey hoping you’d choose Mountaineers over Undercover for being the less predictable choice but the latter is more of a single than the former so I guess it makes sense, also both are basically equally great so it doesn’t matter. Talent WON. I was right about your top 3 Thinking of a Place was my favorite on ADU so good choice I guess excited for the next lists Edited December 22, 2017 by theblackestday
