ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 21, 2017 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 21, 2017 UNORIGINAL'S BEST OF 2017 2017's 50 Best Singles 5 - 1 #5 Rae Morris - Do It The acoustic version of this was in my Discover Weekly a while back and I kind of loved it so I checked out the original version and kinda fell in love and I'm still hooked. The message is simple but it's an impossibly, infectiously fun song that starts off with simple production that builds itself up slowly before flowering in the second verse and solidifying Do It as one of the year's shining, best electropop/synthpop songs effortlessly. I'm fond of some of the adlibs in the second verse for no apparent reason too. The understated yet immensely effective production is the highlight of the song for me (along with the deceptively simple earworm of a chorus) but the vocal climax of the song at the end of the bridge is also a moment. The outro is amazing and, without being familiar with Rae Morris for very long at all, Do It has undeniably earned a place as one of my favourite singles of the year. listen here #4 The War on Drugs - Thinking of a Place The War on Drugs' twelve minute minute synthy, rocky eleven-minute epic (and standout from A Deeper Understanding) is incredible. It has an ethereal quality to it that makes it sound distant yet incredibly close and from an outsiders' perspective yet painfully close to home for vocalist Adam Granduciel. It's these juxtapositions, and many more, within the song itself that make it so powerful. The ambient opening passage with its building, strong percussion is enigmatic and mysterious; the lyrics are about something relatively simple and relatable (loss of love) yet Granduciel makes it seem like the most arresting, painful thing one could ever experience; the guitar solos are beyond incredible and the twinkling outro feels like its own heartbreaking piece of its own. Even at eleven minutes Thinking of a Place doesn't overstay its welcome one bit. It's a perfect psychedelic ambient rocky piece that I can't fault anywhere. listen here

ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 21, 2017 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 21, 2017 (edited) #3 Lorde - Green Light I wasn't sure where Lorde would go after Pure Heroine because, although it's great, it's an album that very much documents the late teen years of Lorde's life and it definitely wasn't a sound Lorde could continue or develop on much more than she had in my opinion. Green Light was the first taste of new Lorde and it was mind-blowing from first listen and still is equally flooring nearly two hundred listens later. It's nothing short of a stroke of pure genius: Green Light is cathartic, euphoric, danceable, heartbreaking and everything in between. It's one of Jack Atonoff's production highpoints of 2017 as well. Throughout the song, Lorde conveys her explosions of emotions incredibly and as a listener it's hard to deny Lorde the progression in her life she so clearly wants. Green Light feels hateful towards an ex-lover and hurt, betrayed of what Lorde thought she'd get with her lover and by the epic comedown at the end of the song the listener feels emotionally exhausted and drained in an amazing way: Lorde has taken all of your emotion, screwed it up and given you her pain, hurt and longing to move on and you feel exactly as she feels. Nothing short of faultless. listen here Edited December 21, 2017 by Unoriginal
World Eater Posted December 21, 2017 Posted December 21, 2017 TOAP is just I love their epics! Green Light
ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 21, 2017 Author ATRL Moderator Posted December 21, 2017 #2 Susanne Sundfør - Undercover I only discovered Susanne this year. When I listened to Undercover and Mountaineers the first few times I was certain Mountaineers was the better song but the more I listened to them the more I fell in love with Undercover. The song starts off with Sundfør's vocals backed by nothing more than a piano (which she plays beautifully) and progresses with little less being added to that than a synth line and some gorgeous backing vocals in the chorus and some strings in the second chorus. After this the song reaches its climax; realistically I couldn't really call it a climax but the buildup is so subtle and slow it can equally hardly be called a buildup. Undercover blossoms into a piece decorated by Susanne's vocals whilst the instrumentation swells and rises to a beautifully heartbreaking, triumphant, stunningly cathartic second half that stuns me every time without fail. If anything, it's become even more incredible with successive listens; initially I was listening to the edit on Spotify but when I bought the full version something about the extra chorus made the song feel so much more tense and wrought with pleading it again floored me. Susanne is the epitome of less is more: instead of packing Undercover full of lyrical longing cliches, Susanne lets her voice and the instrumentation do all of the talking and emotional conveying to spectacular, almost unequalled, results. listen here do yourself a favour and find the full version
