wtf at the update being 4 pages back ... how? :deadbanana2:

Nope, I definitely won't drag you for putting ...RFI? so high on your list - if anything I wish it was higher :keir:

Such an amazing song, it's unfortunate that plenty of people don't agree! It's just too indie for them :oh:
Fake Happy slays! It's always been my favorite from After Laughter.

d'you think SotT is underappreciated? I saw a lot of love for it on and off ATRL.

I mainly meant underappreciated on the charts/by the GP :gaycat3: Disco Tots is a lot more loved on here than SOTT so that'd be even weirder to say

RFI was ok but hitlor has better on her album imo. Still an enjoyable bop, I found some 'love' for it again this weekend

UNORIGINAL'S BEST OF 2017

2017's 50 Best Singles

20 - 16

#20

NAO - Nostalgia

3000x0w.jpg

The UK's criminally underappreciated new pioneer of British neo-soul and funk returned this year with a one-off summer single that encompassed its season beautifully. Nostalgia shines and glows warmly with its lovey lyrics and fun, bouncy production that carries the song along through its three and a half minutes. The singles don't quite live up to For All We Know's but that's not to detract from it at all: Nostalgia's replayability and catchiness are undeniable and everything about it screams summer in the absolute best way possible. When NAO announced this I was beyond happy; I was left far from disappointed and continue to adore this song immensely even now.

Tove Styrke - Say My Name

TOVESTYRKE_ART_SINGLE_SAYMYNAME.jpg

The year of the Toves and Styrke won. There's something irresistible about Say My Name; the infatuation and the adoration in the chorus's simple request to 'say my name' shines through uncontrollably and the guitar throughout the song is similarly undeniable. The highlight here, though - and a feature that was seen on Mistakes (Tove's other fantastic single which could've easily charted just as highly had each artist been allowed more than one song) even more strongly - was the vocoder. Its use in the prechorus of Say My Name is quite simply genius and made for what I personally consider to be one of the catchiest things of the year. Her recent cover of Liability was equally amazing and I can't wait for what comes from Tove in 2018. Say My Name's finest quality, however, is its replayability: it's a song you could play once every couple of days or on repeat for an hour and still sound fresh and that, while it's one of the rarest and most valuable traits for a song to possess, is something Tove has already perfected.

alt-J - 3WW

075679898883.jpg

I was more excited for alt-J's return that I think most people were after what many people considered to be the disappointment of This Is All Yours. I, for one, enjoyed This Is All Yours thoroughly and was more than ready for the UK indie-rock band's return. I was expecting something of a development in their sound, much like Hunger of the Pine was from most of An Awesome Wave: not to dissimilar but distinct enough to be unique. Folktronica was absolutely not the route that expectation encompassed and thankfully the lead single off alt-J's third album RELAXER was endearing, enjoyable and fascinating. The song begins with a sinister, mysterious guitar and some percussion that slowly builds up over the introduction of the song. The buildup is gorgeous and the instrumental alone would've been a beautiful album interlude. Nearly a whole two minutes into the song, however, we hear vocals for the first time. And they're not lead singer Joe's -- they're Gus Unger-Hamilton's. It's unexpected but the vocals work well and so does everything afterwards too. The lyrics are at their core about love but deeper than that the song feels purely sensual and passionate to a greater extent than any alt-J song that came before it. 3WW was a commendable return from alt-J and one that I enjoyed thoroughly throughout 2017.

Perfume Genius - Go Ahead

343452563fb4f1090a6c7f2927fc35c3.600x600x1.jpg

The second single from Perfume Genius' fourth album No Shape is perplexing, sassy, forward and commanding; it feels like a perfection of Mike Hadreas' control and craft of the chamber-pop of his sound, challenging critics and detractors to go ahead and try to take him down and get to him. It's a simple statement that feels like something any artist could attempt to write around yet none can do it with the flair and personality Hadreas projects from Go Ahead. The production is insane and thumping and marching and will no doubt turn many people off the song. It was a smart contrast to the explosion of Slip Away - No Shape's lead single - and one that I adore much like I do the song. One that was polarising within the album/single thread and one I imagine will turn off many first time listeners if they choose to listen to it here but equally definitely one of the best and most justifiably, deservedly confident singles of 2017.

Miya Folick - Give it to Me

GITM_EP_cover-1024x1024.jpg

This was in my Spotify Discover Weekly a while back and as the song began I expected a mellow, sweet album cut that lightly called on folk and Joni Mitchell for inspiration. What I received, however, was one of the most stunning, stop-in-your-tracks choruses I'd heard in a long time. It started off as what seemed like a simple song of heartbreak and wanting with beautifully cathartic vocals that caught my attention strongly. The guitar was equally amiable and thoroughly enjoyable. Give it to Me throws away any notion of a buildup in place of simply punching the listener in the face with a brick wall of emotion that was so arresting I was quite simply shocked. I don't want to go into too much detail with this song because I'd rather you listened to it if you haven't heard it before because, although Miya's vocals still stun me with every listen, this is something that is better understood when simply listened to. Folick's vocals are abrasive and will absolutely turn away a lot of listeners but the chorus and the showstopping breakdown near the very end of the song ensured Give it to Me's placement on my Best Of and unconditionally, deservedly high.

15 - 11 probably coming later tonight. Sorry for the immense paragraphs, these songs are just the best of the best for me this year. I'll try not to write as much for the rest but I felt the strong need to gush about these songs a lot. Sorry if I don't comment tonight but lots of work :emofish: I'll still try as hard as I can.

FH is probably in my top 5 on AL. RCB is my favourite.

The GP aren't usually here for quality lbr.
