UNORIGINAL'S BEST OF 2017

2017's 50 Best Singles

25 - 21

BØRNS - Sweet Dreams

Sweet_Dreams_Single.jpg

I've known of BØRNS for a while but kind of just ignored him because I guess I presumed his music wouldn't be for me. Recently though I asked around ATRL if I should check him out and he turned up in some of my Spotify playlists and it was obvious that I'd been missing out. Sweet Dreams is a sublime slice of indie/synthpop with a banger of a chorus and glittering, shimmering glorious production over lyrics and vocals that work perfectly together on a solidly excellent song.

U.S. Girls - Velvet 4 Sale

5a1d42b77d97e.jpg

I don't know quite what makes Meghan Remy's music - the mind behind U.S. Girls - so appealing to me. I liked Half Free a lot so I was looking forward to a followup. MAH (Mad As Hell) was the first taster of new U.S. Girls and it was an excellent return and a perfect reintroduction with the same knack for storytelling lyrics but on top of an instrumental that felt peppier than a lot of Half Free. Velvet 4 Sale came a while after and, as well as being the better song, seems to be the middle-ground between the peppy and the dark and has some amazing percussion, breathing used as an instrument and vocoder effects on the chorus vocals which I love. Everything melds together to make a fantastic song which I thoroughly recommend.

Taylor Swift - ...Ready for It?

AR-170829769.jpg

Okay I'll probably get dragged for placing this so high on my list but after Look What You Made Me Do, which was good and a dabble into the darker pop sound that some of reputation would follow, I still kind of wanted more. ...Ready for It? was that more. The song has a proper chorus, trap influences and an industrial pop edge that I really like. It also works very very well as an album opener and for some reason I'm a fan of the prrrrrp prrrrrrp prrrrrp. The satirical lyrics are also pretty good as a subtle swipe at critics who call Taylor all kinds of stuff so it has that going for it too.

Kimbra - Top of the World

9f0dc10b0782f684d15ac6641f7e1059.1000x1000x1.jpg

Lowkey a bit of a mess but we'll ignore that. I think after Somebody That I Used to Know, Vows and The Golden Echo, Kimbra deserves her own braggadocio song and Top of the World does it very well. Skrillex's production is great and the tribal drums are equally brilliant and they work excellently as a backdrop to Kimbra's flaunts and brags which I, in all honesty, can't fault despite them being considerably grand. The 'on my knees' hook is also really catchy despite being a bit undecipherable at times.

Paramore - Fake Happy

tumblr_p0zupsBNJL1rbb611o7_1280.jpg

After Laughter was a dramatic departure for Paramore after releasing four albums rooted in punk-pop and punk-rock but it worked incredibly in their favour. Fake Happy is the best of the three singles. It's 1980s-inspired synthpop with a slight punky edge and dark lyrics that contrast its bright, fluffy instrumentation strongly. Hayley Williams' vocals are great on the song, the lyrics are sharp and thoughtful without feeling fake and the guitar is equally brilliant. This was an After Laughter standout so when it was announced as a proper official single I was more than happy and it justly earns its place so high on my list.
