Maddox Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 Fff Bono is a damn fool Vince, Kelela, GoldLink, PG, tonite Nice top 10!
Bloomers Posted December 30, 2017 Posted December 30, 2017 Alright. I trust your taste very much so I would like to say thank you for putting together a TV list because I have fallen really far behind in pop culture and will use it to help me catch up. I think I will start with Manhunter when I get the chance! A 8-part dramatization of how the FBI got the Unabomber, this was surprisingly a nice watch. Paul Bettany however completely slaughtered (in a good way) I see what you did here and you're killing me with it As far as the music goes, I'm catching up on your Best of, but I really like everything I already know: Jay, Vince, the National, Kelela, LCD, Thundercat, etc. While I was here, I checked out that Anna von Hausswolff (what a name) track because of the description and terrifying artwork and was pretty impressed. It was Wicked cool I'm gonna have to go through the rest that I don't know.
Navyofbadgals Posted December 30, 2017 Posted December 30, 2017 both Jay songs are good picks for #1 definitely the best of his album I would say that O.J. is the better track, though 4:44 has more replay value, so this tie makes sense Bluff is better than both though
Pink Matter Posted December 30, 2017 Posted December 30, 2017 Awesome top 10. Just didn't care for Ariel Pink this year and had no idea The Diplomats came through with music this year lmao. Great #1 too
montrealxo Posted December 30, 2017 Posted December 30, 2017 damn that top 10 i didn't like 4:44 like i wanted to. i tried. i was just bored to tears with it real fast. i could hear the quality though
MP2K Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 Drowning is a song I really grew to like. He's from my hometown and all the kids/people were talking about him and was just like meh. That's still probably the only song I will listen to from him lol Undercover got hate, from where? I did snub it this year though. I do love me some Susanne. I just discovered Alterlife and I'm pissed, I use. Chanel, Banana Clip + FriendZone That top 10 tbh is great I'm gaging at Diplomats but listening to it, it's really good.

I love that it's placed alongside Crew, 745, and Once Upon a Time too. The diversity in rap! Bluff deserves it. I know it's not malicious (well I hope not) but when people try to downplay how R&B she is <<< I love that she claims it and gives us gems like Bluff, SOS, Altadena, etc The hip thing to do is downplay R&B as a genre that doesn't allow for 'real artistry'. Which is quite funny. None of these alt R&B joints are half as good as the 'traditional R&B/Soul' of the 70s. They keep trying it though. On 12/29/2017 at 11:11 AM, theblackestday said: 745 Bluff has always been my favorite on TMA initially which I was really mad over cause it's literally one minute, but thankfully I love the entire album quite equally now. Glad to see it getting some recognition the greatest one minute of music ever composed/produced/sung/etc. 4:44 is an excellent #1 TASTE

My sides haven't been relevant since Bobby Shmurda went to prison + Troy Ave tried to assassinate someone That site they praise on here, The Singles Jukebox slammed it. I've also seen some other places say it's just a weak Kate Bush attempt. It's way better than Salute, they should've released it earlier or maybe put someone young on it like Boogie maybe.
Wicked Posted January 1, 2018 Author Posted January 1, 2018 Okay nvm, update tomorrow.later. 10 albums, all EPs, 10 shows + the rest of the films
Pink Matter Posted January 1, 2018 Posted January 1, 2018 Lmao I just heard that The Diplomats song. I knew when it opened with them singing Oh Happy Day it would be dope. It's a good song though. Definitely get CD era Ye vibes from it.

Wicked Posted January 3, 2018 Author Posted January 3, 2018 (edited) 35. Shameless (Showtime) Quote Kind of wish this had kept of it's streak from the opening episodes of the current season, which was the best the show had been since S4. It has nosedived recently and I would've put this lower if I could. tbh take the characters out of their misery and end the series. When Frank is the only one progressing it's time to call it quits. This family dramadey become one of my instant favorites for it's honest portrayal of a dysfunctional family while simultaneously showcasing a lower middle class group of people (if you haven't noticed, almost everyone on TV has infinite funds lol) Best Episodes: 'God Bless Her Rotting Soul', 'We Become What We... Frank!' 34. This Is Us (NBC) Quote As usual Randall & Jack are the best parts of the show still but the writers stalling on Jack's fate, and still kind of having Kevin in a rut it annoying. Still, it's a good show and while it does tug at the heartstrings a bit, they've settled into being able to tell stories without so much emotional manipulation. The surprisingly innovative take on the family drama is still something I feel is important to have during Peak TV. It's a break from the sometimes downright depressing & grimm shows that are popular. A final upside is... I am starting to care about Kevin! Best Episodes: 'Number Three', 'A Manny-Splendored Thing', 'Brothers', 'Number One' 33. The Girlfriend Experience (Starz!) Quote While not quite as riveting as S1, S2 of this anthology series focuses on call girls (escorts) was fine. S2 was a change in the shows structure, displaying 2 parallel storylines. I gravitated more to the secondary plot: 'Bria' a lot more as it was better written and felt more inspired as a whole. Erica & Anna wasn't bad, but after the first few really good episodes things starting getting weird and quite frankly didn't make any sense/ What became clear at the end of the season was Amy Seimetz was most likely the meat of what made S1 so good. Best Episodes: 'Erica & Anna: Leverage', 'Bria: Moral Inventory', 'Bria: Living Like a Tornado', 'Erica & Anna: Citizens First' 32.Skam (NRK) Quote The best teen Drama this side of Friday Night Lights, Skam was a joy to watch. Finally... A show about teens FROM teens STARRING teens. Each season focuses on a different character, and its fourth & final season focuses on Sana. What makes this special is that Sana is a non-white Muslim girl living in Norway which is an extreme rarity. It explores her struggle with her religion trying to balance that with her social life & romantic life. While there were a few things I didn't fancy, it was still damn good. There's going to be a U.S. version of the series rand & written by the creator of the original Norwegian version, here's to hoping it's just as great + unique. Best Episodes: 'Allah Would've Loved You', 'If You Are Sad, I'm Sad', 'The Biggest Losers at School', 'Thanks For Everything' 31. Silicon Valley (HBO) Quote idc about the criticisms. This season of the Tech industry satire was still pretty hilarious, even if it does feel like structurally the story is going in circles. Mike Judge hears that and I'm not really worried about the upcoming season. The guys ended up going into a partnership with the 'big bad' of season 1-3, which was an interesting choice. There's been noticeable character growth in the lead Richard, which I'm also looking forward to see where it goes. But the best thing about S4 was the expanded banter of Dinesh & Gilfoyle, Jian Yang & even more iconic dialogue from Jared. A character that was always the weakest link was fired written out of the show and I'm really glad he was. With that major change, I'm expecting big things for S5. Still one of the funniest shows on air + STILL better than Veep. Best Episodes: 'Terms of Service', 'Intellectual Property', 'The Blood Boy' 30. Dear White People (Netflix) Quote I'll start by saying I didn't **** with the film... At all. I felt it was a little too much, heavy handed and just not that well written. The series corrects all of the films mistakes. The show isn't about giving white people lessons on the insensitive things tey say or do, it's focused on the students of color at a university that has a lot of racial tension and how each character deals with that individually. You have some militant characters, that want to fight over all injustice no matter how big and small, and you also have those that want to infiltrate into systems of power and shake things up from the inside. The show (thankfully) doesn't try to paint one side as more 'right' than the other, but rather how the conflicts between those with different ideologies should instead work together rather put each other down. The show also goes to give great commentary on common issues relevant in the black community. Light vs Dark, intersectionality, interracial dating & more. But it also had it's lighter moments & could be extremely humorous when not talking about race. Let's hope S2 doesn't **** everything up. Best Episodes: 'Chapter V', 'Chapter IX', 'Chapter X' 29. Mr. Robot (USA Network) Quote It's quite sad how Mr. Robot had it's best season this year but because of the way S2 was, a lot of people dropped it to never return. Consistent, riveting, daring & strong. It seems like this is a low spot but in a great year for good-great TV it's not a slight. I'll be interested to see where they go in S4, given how S3 ended. I'm kind of hoping Sam & the crew take 2018 off. Best Episodes: 'eps3.4_runtime-error.r00', 'eps3.5_kill-process.inc', 'shutdown -r' 28. Fargo (FX) Quote One of the pretty much agreed upon essentials of 'Peak TV', Fargo returned for it's first less than exceptional season. While it was still very good, great even there was more familiarity here than the previous 2 seasons of the acclaimed anthology black comedy. That hurt it a bit, but in ways it was still just as great as ever, especially when it came to it's villain, the "iconic" death scene, and the marvelous closing episodes of the season. Fargo won't be back anytime soon for S4, which will probably be a good thing. What made Fargo S2 so great was how different it was from S1 while still carrying a similar tone & being connected. I believe Noah Hawley has the tools to do a repeat of that, so I'll still be anticipating it's next installment. Best Episodes: 'Aporia', 'The Lord of No Mercy', 'The Law of Non-Contradiction' 27. Mike Judge Presents: Tales From the Tour Bus (Cinemax) Quote Mike Judge doesn't really fail like that with animation, this is one of the best new series of the year. Pretty different in format from what he's done previously, as each episode is telling a different story about a (real) lesser known Country artist (I know, this sounds boring as ****) but all the Mike Judge trademarks are there: Crude yet 'intelligent' humor, humility & exceptional storytelling. Mike Judge animation mainly focuses on Southern life, often a satirical take on it while still being respectful of the culture which can often be very hard to accomplish, but one of the geniuses of Comedy continues to pull it off. I can't wait for more. Best Episodes: 'Billy Joe Shaver', 'Blaze Foley' 26. The New Edition Story (BET) Quote The surprise of the year for me a was a surprisingly honest & well made bio-mini series about the R&B group New Edition. Biopics/Series, are a tricky thing to get 'right'. Sometimes done too soon (Tupac), aren't respectful to the artist (that Whitney mess AND Tupac) or aren't very... Honest (Aaliyah). While we obviously don't know the raw details of everything that happens behind the scenes, New Edition has always had controversial reports apparently in their heyday. And from what I know, that was portrayed accurately here. All the guys were fortunately apart of its creation as well, so hats off to them for allowing their dirty laundry to be aired. I can't forget the musical performances in the films that were absolutely killer. I hope BET does more like this, I do know a Jodeci film or series is in the works and if they do my babies wrong I will end their asses. Best Episodes: There's only three, but Episode 2 is the best. Wicked Posted January 3, 2018 Author Posted January 3, 2018 19. 坂本龍一 [Ryuichi Sakamoto] - async AmbientModern Classical, Electroacoustic, Field Recordings I'm surprised at some dislike about this album, the study album of 2017 for me! Although I prefer when Sakamoto is more upbeat, still pretty great compositions here. 18. Ariel Pink - Dedicated to Bobby Jameson Hypnagogic Pop, Psychedelic Pop New Wave Firstly, this is one of the best covers of the year. Even though this is one of his weaker post-Before Today efforts, I still messed with it heavily. At many times, Pop gets no better when penned by AP. He's kind of been on and off for a while, so odds are the next album will be a (cult) classic like hopefully pom pom will be. 17. John Maus - Screen Memories Hypnagogic Pop, Synthpop Minimal Synth, Post-Punk While not as memorable as his previous efforts, once again I still really enjoyed it. Not much to really dislike. 16. Susanne Sundfør - Music for People in Trouble Art Pop Chamber Folk, Ambient Pop, Contemporary Folk, Progressive Pop Is it just me or does the whole tone of this album fit perfectly with the downright depressing state that was 2017? The more "avant garde" (I hate using this term but it applies) tracks offer a good balance so that the emotional state of the album doesn't get too overwhelming. I'd probably say this is Susanne's best album, and I'm sure I'll get more fond of it the more I listen to it.

HOWEVER, it's a show's job to not make that seem repetitive or justify its narrative repetition and still get some meat out of that. I did like this season but when you have something as brilliant as Halt and Catch Fire being able to capture the humane truth in why people in tech keep running in circles I'm not sure Silicon Valley has any excuses anymore but it still works as a comedy so.
