Maddox Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 I understand the criticism on the way Kumail depicted the pakistani women as caricaturish + casting Anupam Kher as a muslim is whatever, but i can't deny how relatable the movie is, and Holly Hunter was so freaking good! The Meyerowitz Stories was really good too.

Wicked Posted December 23, 2017 Author Posted December 23, 2017 41. Survivor's Remorse (Starz!) Quote Often called "Sports Entourage", Survivor's Remorse was a lot more than that. Following a family that moves from the hood of Boston to Georgia as one of them has become a star basketball player, the show never failed to have a lot more heart then Entourage, or a lot of other comedies on TV. Even though he's a supporting cast member, the star performer here season after season was RonReaco Lee's Reggie Vaughn. Often the voice of reason, but at some point during every season he'd deliver an award worthy monologue relevant to that episodes current theme. This season topics such as interracial dating (but between 2 different racial minorities), disadvantaged groups, intersectionality, commitment, forgiveness, religion, sexual assault & more it often deviated from the presented theme of the show. For whatever reason the series never really gained a big audience, it was even paired with Starz! hit Drama 'Power' to no luck. Ultimately, it was cancelled a few months ago. It will be missed, as it was a unique comedy even during Peak TV. Best Episodes: 'Feel Free to Comment', 'The Gala', 'Reparations' & 'Optics' 40. Manhunt: Unabomber (Discovery) Quote A 8-part dramatization of how the FBI got the Unabomber, this was surprisingly a nice watch. Paul Bettany however completely slaughtered (in a good way) every scene he was in. As far as I know this is Discovery's first dip into attempting "prestige TV", it kinda worked. Best Episodes: 'USA vs. Theodore J. Kaczynski', 'Abri', 'Fruit of the Poisonous Tree' 39. The Good Fight (CBS All Access) Quote I've never seen The Good Wife so idk how this compared, but I enjoyed watching this week to week. A legal drama following 3 different women I don't have too much to complain about, I enjoyed the dramatization of some things that were obviously ripped from the headlines, but I don't think I cared too much about one of the ladies sub-plots (which ended up the main plot). Cameos from A players such as Carrie Preston were year-long highlights for me. The creators have mentioned in recent interviews they're headed in a serialized direction, which I'm definitely looking forward to. These days the only legal dramas anyone cares about are some product of Shonda Rhimes (and they suck). So this is a nice change of pace in that it... Doesn't suck. Best Episodes: 'Self Condemned', 'Social Media and Its Discontents' & 'First Week' 38. Claws (TNT) Quote One of the most 'fun' shows I've seen this year, Claws is a fun camp mess with a crime drama heart, sort of. Finally, a show that recognizes Niecy Nash' talents as an actress too. Claws also managed to be one of the most diverse shows of the year, without coming off forced. It's a more proper reflection that type of community. Some decisions came across as last minute changes (Roller's entire arc), which I'm not too keen on. The season had a rocky start but started coming together before the halfway mark. I'm pretty excited to see where they go in S2. The dance sequence to Lady Marmalade is enough to justify placement. Best Episodes: 'Batshit', 'Avalanche' & 'Self Portrait' 37. Sneaky Pete (Amazon) Quote Sneaky Pete has an argument for most overkill casting in any show of the year: Giovanni Ribisi as the lead, with Bryan Cranston, Margo Martindale & Peter Gerety in supporting roles. Don't forget Allison Wright, Malcolm Jamal Warner & more. Was this level of talent needed? Not really, but it still all worked out. Sneaky Pete took it's time coming together but it was worth it in the end. I'm still a little suspect on how the plot of a con artist conning a family into thinking he was their relative will last for multiple seasons, but with someone like Graham Yost at the head of it I'm not too worried about it. Best Episodes: 'The Roll Over' & 'The Turn' 36. Rick & Morty ([adult swim]) Quote This might go down as my least favorite season of Rick 7 Morty, but I still liked it heavily. For me, it kind of hit undo on a lot of character development + I don't think it was necessary. Although, some signs point to the show getting stronger from a structure point of view. I don't see the hype of Pickle Rick, the seasons most lauded over episode. Season 3 was more of a mixed bag than even season 2, which I seem to be alone in thinking had a few misses as well (such as Interdimensional Cable 2). Best Episodes: 'The Ricklantis Mixup', 'Morty's Mind Blowers' & 'The ABCs of Beth'
Playa Playa Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 Miss Me, Magnolia, Cleo & SDKBSK PRETTYMUCH are definitely a full package and deserve more success than they're receiving. Teacher is my fave! Great films! Just still gotta watch The Big Sick () and The Meyerowitz Stories.
Playa Playa Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 I kinda missed out on Survivor's Remorse, didn't I? The Lady Marmalade moment is when Claws really clicked for me. Great moment lol. And Rick & Morty was really good this year imo (I loved Pickle Rick!) but I agree that it was a mixed bag.

Yes, you did! The scene it was juxtaposed with too >> Pickle Rick was fun... But idk I didn't feel it. I thought it was a little too outlandish even for Rick & Morty. 41 minutes ago, Playa Playa said: PRETTYMUCH are definitely a full package and deserve more success than they're receiving. Both good, I think you'll like the former more.
Staryu Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 omg I forgot about The Good Fight, I need to finish it Rick and Morty was good and omg you haven't seen The Good Wife? You should check it out sometime, it's quality television

Yeah they aren't exactly wrong but that's a loong conversation... It's so weird how Pickle Rick randomly blew up (the show always produced moments like these) but i disagree abt the season being weaker than the first two, the only negatif thing this year was how useless Summer and Jerry were
Wicked Posted December 24, 2017 Author Posted December 24, 2017 Taking a break until Xmas, which will be followed with a big music-related update. Full recap here. Happy holidays!

Hellmouth Posted December 26, 2017 Posted December 26, 2017 If you enjoyed The Good Fight, then you should definitely give The Good Wife a chance. It improved every season until S6 and S7, which were still enjoyable despite being weaker in certain aspects. The series finale received backlash, but I'd love to read your thoughts on it. Carrie Preston appeared in 14 episodes, and her scenes are even better than what she's been given in The Good Fight so far.
Wicked Posted December 26, 2017 Author Posted December 26, 2017 5 albums, 10 songs + 2 EPs coming up ?
Wicked Posted December 27, 2017 Author Posted December 27, 2017 30. Young Thug - Do U Love Me Somewhat slowly but surely, Thug is getting better at crafting full projects rather than ones that come across half baked with insane highlights + everything else being useless. This one is the most fun! London's still got it. 29. Cardi B - Bodak Yellow The Cinderella story of the year, from Love & Hip Hop to Billboard Hot 100 #1. There hasn't been such a story since the rise of 50 Cent (not that Cardi or her story are in the same ball park as Curtis Jackson, but it's inspiring as hell). The song is fun too, although I'm confused how it blew up. Congrats to Cardi tho! 28. Rae Sremmurd - Perplexing Pegasus I'm still a bit mad SremmLife 3 didn't come out this year, especially after hearing this. RS is basically a duo for the generation at this point. You've got the hook guy & the one with bars. There's something hypnotizing about the beat. 27. G Perico - Get My Staccs The bizarro world-Do It To Ya. Except from Quik's brand of G-Funk. 26. Charli XCX - Emotional The best song off N1A, while I enjoy the crazy stuff Charli put out this year, when she strips it back a bit I think she's at her best. 25. Future - Mask Off The main receipt on proving Metro was producer of the year. This actually might be the best beat of the year... In any genre. 24. Migos - Slippery (feat. Gucci Mane) My favorite Culture bop at the time of making this post, since it has changed so much throughout the year. Offset/Takeoff still with the best bars, and Quavo with the hook. A bop. 23. Pugwash - Without You One of my favorite discoveries this year was Pugwash, and my favorite track off their record is very reminiscent of 60 Pop music (Beatles, Kinks, Beach Boys even) The melody & harmony especially are great. 22. Emma Ruth Rundle - The Distance Emma released a halfway nice joint EP with another artist whose name escapes, but The Distance sounds like a continuation of 2016's Marked For Death (which made my albums list last year) with a twist. Instead of death, Emma sings in a crippling fashion about a fleeting memory & time. 21. MGMT - Little Dark Age Surprisingly a lot of folks weren't feeling this when it came out but I did. MGMT worked with Ariel Pink during the creation of their upcoming album and some influence is immediately felt here, although it also has some signature quirks that remind me of OS. If there's more to come in this vein, MGMT just might drop their best album yet.
Wicked Posted December 27, 2017 Author Posted December 27, 2017 (Click the covers to listen to Spotify) 25. Migos - Culture Trap Rap, Southern Hip HopPop Rap . Hits album of the year, this might Migos most cohesive project... And this is coming from a huge champion of YRN. I didn't listen to it in the latter half of the year as much as the first but that was unrelated to the album itself. 24. Aldous Harding - Party Contemporary Folk, Singer/SongwriterPsychedelic Folk, Indie Folk (TBA) 23. Young Thug - Beautiful Thugger Girls Trap Rap, Pop Rap, Contemporary R&B, Southern Hip Hop As mentioned earlier, one of Thugger's best whole projects. 22. G Perico - All Blue Gangsta Rap, West Coast Hip HopG-Funk I get the comparisons to YG, but G & Keenon are pulling from different styles of G-Funk. G Perico sounds like a student of the DJ Quik school of G-Funk, and I'm all on board. His lyricism is rather weak compared to his west coast contemporaries but there's always room for improvement. 21. Julien Baker - Turn Out the Lights Singer/Songwriter, SlowcoreIndie Folk (TBA) 20. The Caretaker - Everywhere at the End of Time: Stage 3 Turntable Music, AmbientBritish Dance Band, Dark Ambient, Glitch, Drone It seems like Stage 2 got all the attention, but Stage 3 is by far the best in this extended set from The Caretaker. It's a concept series based on if The Caretaker was diagnosed with dementia, and it definitely does have this disintegrated feel to it, and the mixup of different moments & emotions which would fall in line with a person with dementia. It probably is pretentious but I enjoyed it.
Tom Vercetti Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 Song set is lit up. mask off, get my staccs, little dark age >> I started to lose track of caretaker's stuff after stage 2, probably more my fault than his Beautiful Thugger got a spin or two but eh. Slime Season material > I wanted to like the Julien Baker album but it didn't put me in a favorable mood. Culture was good and so was All Blue but G Perico definitely has more potential to do better.
Staryu Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 Bodak, Charli, and Migos enjoyed all in some capacity this year
