Playa Playa Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 This update: Rap did that And Cardi's story and BY going #1 definitely elevates the song for me but it's a banger on its own too. Turn Out the Lights is such a hard listen but I'd also place it around #20. Title track, Appointments, Shadowboxing & Claws In Your Back are special songs.
Navyofbadgals Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 BY sidenote but just started with Manhunt: Unabomber and it's great
Pink Matter Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 Back for the music! Songs: BY , Perplexing Pegasus was bit underwhelming for me I did only give it one listen so I'll check it out again. Mask Off and Slippery Albums: Gonna have to check out a few of these albums (G. Perico and Julien Baker)
DAP Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 Stan Young Thug and Migos I still can’t get into Bodak Yellow. It sucks, Bartier Cardi is better
World Eater Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 Turn Out the Lights and Party didn't do much for me Relistened to All Blue recently and liked it much better than I initially did As for the song list, Bodak, Mask Off and Slippery are my favs from here
MP2K Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 Simply put about Cardi The beats on Slippery and Mask Off are dope I never heard of G Perico , may check out
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 28, 2017 ATRL Moderator Posted December 28, 2017 OMG YES You like Little Dark Age too Cardi's description is spot on, and I'm kinda surprised of the stripped back ones Emotional is your fave. What about Tears?
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 28, 2017 ATRL Moderator Posted December 28, 2017 Oh glad you're a fan of Leikeli too Miss Me is so good but I think MILK and bubblegum are my fave new tracks from it. I kinda.... don't understand your Samantha pick
Wicked Posted December 29, 2017 Author Posted December 29, 2017 20. Anna von Hausswolff - The Mysterious Vanishing of Electra I love my demonic sounding rock. Get it girl. 19. A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie - Drowning This was a good year for The BX. Both Cardi & Boogie broke out in a major way (there HAS to be a collaboration down the line... Just has to, they're both on Atlantic too). I think the Kodak-free version is better when the theme of the song comes into play, he kind of offsets it. 18. Susanne Sundfor - Undercover I didn't realize this song got so much hate Too bad, I love it! I'm a fan of overly dramatic ballads if done right + depending on the voice, and Susanne ticks all my boxes. 17. Luke James - Drip Classic R&B sound + that voice = Gold. 16. Rina Sawayama - Alterlife Hide your pop faves, Rina's kind of tugging at their wigs, no? Rina in general reminds me a lot of 90s house/R&B music (that is a good thing), her strong vocal combined with the loud synths & that guitar equal pop heaven for me. 15. John Maus - Edge of Forever This is classic Maus, the haunting vocals, taunting production and subject matter. The twist is it's his best composition in years. 14. Frank Ocean - Chanel Frank having straight men (tbh even a lot of girls) I know saying "my guy pretty like a girl" in public is enough to place this high. No but seriously, I really enjoyed this track among the other little songs he dropped this year. It's not really anything special musically but I liked listening to it so here it is. 13. Thundercat - Friend Zone Friend Zone is the funniest revenge song EVER He doesn't pull any punches here, because he'd rather play Mortal Kombat anyway! I love the use of multiple snyths & groves that help flesh out the emotion in the lyrics. 12. Miguel - Banana Clip Miguel is such a weird case for me. He'll drop songs like this, Harem, others from his previous work that are just out of this world. Then the rest of the project will leave me relatively cold. I feel as though Miguel works better when he strips himself down to the basics, more often than not when he sort of shoots for the stars it ends up a miss. I just don't trust anyone who doesn't like this. 11. Fleet Foxes - On Another Ocean ( January / June ) The switch after the 2:10 mark is one for the ages and everything after is one of the best songs I've ever heard in my life. This year there were a lot of tracks reflecting on old memories or lost relationships and this just might be the best one. It seemed as though some people were worried about Fleet Foxes without Tillman...? Why? I have no idea. This is among their best work.
Wicked Posted December 29, 2017 Author Posted December 29, 2017 The top 10 is coming like 5 minutes, anyone who makes the closest guess to my top 10 gets a gold star!
Tom Vercetti Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 Well it's definitely not gonna contain a SZA song. crew big fish or 745 feels like heaven some father john misty track a kelela track an OPN song? Maybe Grizzly? Maybe Yaeji? all i can think of for now. you're unpredictable.
Playa Playa Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 Welp I didn't realize people hated Undercover either? It's good! And I feel the same way about Miguel, War & Leisure and Banana Clip. He's a great mess. Afterlife & Chanel & Friend Zone & Another Ocean Tom got all the Top 10 predictions I could think of (Crew, 745, Kelela) lol but there should be Perfume Genius too! Maybe Die 4 You.

Wicked Posted December 29, 2017 Author Posted December 29, 2017 (edited) 10. Perfume Genius - Die 4 You Sade, her impact is too powerful. How Mike subverted a common trope in love songs was a stroke of genius. Spoiler 9. LCD Soundsystem - tonite Mariah Carey & Aretha Franklin-level drag of current Pop music (that it deserves), I approve. They sound full of salt but it's so good. Spoiler 8. Ariel Pink - Feels Like Heaven Indie pop King went back to his earlier aesthetic here, while writing one of the best songs of the year. The melody, the production, it's all ace. Spoiler 7. The National - Dark Side of the Gym Dad Rock won. The best love song of the year. Spoiler 6. GoldLink - Crew I won't forgive you all for allowing Gucci Gang, Gummo, XO Tour Lif3 & co to blow up and NOT CREW. Why?? An anthem, song of live, you gotta jam when this comes on. Anyone hating on Shy Glizzy's part has no taste. Spoiler 5. The Diplomats - Once Upon a Time If this was a Kanye beat+song it would've topped every song list, the way this got ignored is just so infuriating. This is classic Dipset. Cam & Jim showed up + delivered. The only thing missing was a Juelz verse. Jim Jones is the best he's every been as he paints the picture of Dipset's impact on Hip-Hop culture while Cam is as great as ever while greatly informing us Harvey Weinsten got smacked on Paid In Full by Dame Dash for disrespecting one of the ladies. It's music video of the year, try and debate this! They have an EP coming and if there's more of this to come I'll pray to the Rap gods it doesn't go overlooked like this. 4. Vince Staples - 745 Why is Bono acting like everyone in Hip-Hop is angry 24/7 and don't get, ahem, 'girly'/soft as he liked to put it? A song about not feeling appreciated, being used, and the fear of pushing people away was all addressed by a rapper here. Bono should clear his ears out. Spoiler 3. The War on Drugs - Knocked Down The definitive #1 'sad bastard' song of the year. This is it. This is IT! Spoiler 2. Kelela - Bluff This doesn't even have a video on Youtube, that's how unloved it it. It's very rare that an interlude makes this much of an impression on me, but if anyone could do it, it's the savior of 2017 R&B. She's calling a bluff on her lover threatening to leave. Wicked Posted December 29, 2017 Author Posted December 29, 2017 THE song of 2017 is... 1. Jay Z - 4:44/The Story of O.J. 4:44 was way too grown to miss my list & O.J. is... O.J. 4:44 Jay owns up to the mistakes he's made in his marriage in an apology letter to his wife. The Jay Z of today is not fundamentally the same Jay Z even in 2003, let alone the beginning of his career. Watching and most of all hearing the growth in 4:44 was truly a joy. The Story of O.J. is a letter of sorts too, it's a letter to the black community on how we can advance as a collective & help us grow. It uses O.J. and his infamous quote, along with listing labels within the community as a way to separate from blackness or act above it. It also references a popular Malcolm X speech. And they're the SOTY. I also lied tbh The Story of O.J. is VOTY. Spoiler
Tom Vercetti Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 Quote rap won A reverse Tom experience. Bluff being #2 of the year and only a little over a minute long, her power Only track here i'm unaware of here ironically is from the Diplomats . Lemme take a peek. Nice top 10 ofc. Quote Why is Bono acting like everyone in Hip-Hop is angry 24/7 and don't get, ahem, 'girly'/soft as he liked to put it? Tell me about it, almost regretted my Kendrick choice.
Wicked Posted December 29, 2017 Author Posted December 29, 2017 I had all these replies then they got wiped I'll reply in a bit again but, all 10 EPs, 5 albums, music related moments + sports related lists are all coming on Saturday. Be there or be square!
Ewan Chaos Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 Wow rap did win I guess I love Vince that's for sure, and that's a great pick. Same for Kelela, War on Drugs, The National, Perfume Genius, & LCD (I really love tonite, glad everyone else does too). Gonna touch a bit on the previous songs too - Banana Clip is amazing. My fave non single from the record. "ahahaha" so goooooood!
Staryu Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 Wow you really stanned Jay this year Kelela at #2 tho
Playa Playa Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 Great Top 10 The Story of OJ and 4:44 are definitely the two best songs that embody Hov's great return to form. I love that it's placed alongside Crew, 745, and Once Upon a Time too. The diversity in rap! Bluff deserves it. I know it's not malicious (well I hope not) but when people try to downplay how R&B she is <<< I love that she claims it and gives us gems like Bluff, SOS, Altadena, etc
theblackestday Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 745 Bluff has always been my favorite on TMA initially which I was really mad over cause it's literally one minute, but thankfully I love the entire album quite equally now. Glad to see it getting some recognition the greatest one minute of music ever composed/produced/sung/etc. 4:44 is an excellent #1
