Little Dark Age Posted December 17, 2017 Author Posted December 17, 2017 (edited) Welcome to my top 100 singles of 2017 countdown. This list is a bit inaccurate for a number of reasons: most artists can't normally chart a full album at once, album tracks don't normally rank high because I tend to listen to the singles more frequently, 2016 singles are eligible and the list is based on chart performance on my weekly singles chart over the whole year, not on plays. The reason for the latter is I tend to find that I love some songs but don't necessarily listen to them all the time (ex: songs with a haunting vibe don't normally get plays in the middle of the day, when I listen to music most). Also some good news is that it's reflective of my overall opinion over the year, not just my thoughts at the moment. This prevents recent releases from dominating the upper spots. I may dump the singles chart in 2018 but for now, here we go... Here are some songs that didn't quite make the cut. Highlighted entries are still charting on the weekly list and could enter the 2018 ranking Bubbling Under (No. 200 - 101) 200 When You Die - MGMT 199 Sit Next to Me - Foster the People 198 Blue Monday - HEALTH 197 Fake Magic - Peking Duk & AlunaGeorge 196 High For Hours - J. Little Dark Age Posted December 18, 2017 Author Posted December 18, 2017 No. 100 - No. 96 Quote STATS PEAK: #8 | WEEKS ON: 13 | DEBUT: 27 July 2017 POINTS: 289.41 | CERTIFICATION: SILVER OFF THE CHART/CURRENTLY CHARTING "I Ain't Got Time!" was obviously one of 2017's biggest bangers, being a staple on my playlist for most of the summer and propelled by the three week No. 1 album 'Flower Boy'. But, as with all bangers, the track's density ultimately cost it a higher rank on this countdown. Thankfully, a recent revisit helped lock in its position. The first and only appearance from Tyler, the Creator. Quote STATS PEAK: #6 | WEEKS ON: 11 | DEBUT: 19 October 2017 POINTS: 292.66 | CERTIFICATION: SILVER OFF THE CHART/CURRENTLY CHARTING When I first heard "Havana", I was sure it'd be a bigger hit than the forgettable "OMG". That being said, I was not expecting it to be the worldwide smash it turned out to be. Why? Because at first I wasn't super impressed; it's latin leaning with a rent-a-rapper, just like nearly every other mainstream release this year. And yet "Havana" is here because it has another quality I couldn't see at first; replay value. It's simply infectious, getting more powerful with each subsequent listen. I wasn't a fan of Fifth Harmony's work and Camila's early output was definitely not good but she might have just won me over with this one. The first and only appearance from both Camila Cabello and Young Thug. Quote STATS PEAK: #26 | WEEKS ON: 16 | DEBUT: 17 August 2017 POINTS: 297.86 | CERTIFICATION: SILVER OFF THE CHART/CURRENTLY CHARTING In the past, Kesha had always been on retainer for catchy, unmemorable fare; songs like "Die Young" and "Timber" were hits on my chart but did not show longevity. In fact, it wasn't really until this era that I started taking her seriously. The 'Rainbow' era produced a number of things including her first No. 1 on my chart, the best LP of her career and one of my favorite album tracks of the year. "Let 'Em Talk" proved Kesha can still cook up catchy tracks while cementing a somewhat more mature and consistent tone. The first of two appearances from Kesha and the only appearance from Eagles of Death Metal. Quote STATS PEAK: #27 | WEEKS ON: 19 | DEBUT: 23 March 2017 POINTS: 299.9 | CERTIFICATION: SILVER OFF THE CHART/CURRENTLY CHARTING I know this isn't even a 2017 single but I just discovered it this year so lemme live Anyway, I don't have much to say as I don't know much about the band but this song is so damn good. It's funky, fresh, hypnotic and in all honesty deserved a higher position I just never heard it anywhere which explains its low position here. The first and only appearance from STRFKR. Quote STATS PEAK: #9 (#16 in 2017) | WEEKS ON: 55 (21 in 2017) | DEBUT: 14 May 2015 (23 March 2017) POINTS: 297.86 | CERTIFICATION: 4X Platinum OFF THE CHART/CURRENTLY CHARTING Ready to be slaughtered for this one but anyway on to the explanation... I've absolutely adored () this song since its release in 2015 but it never managed to climb higher than No. 9 on the weekly chart. However, the sunny, psychedelic-tinged vibes that this song projects with each listen have helped this track re-enter the singles chart in each subsequent year (notably during the summer). Its longevity has it on its way to timeless status and it might even be one of my favorite tracks of all time, aging better than almost every song that blocked it in the top 10 in its initial run. Truly the perfect love song; another one of his other tracks absolutely can not relate. The first of three appearances from Miguel.

Little Dark Age Posted December 18, 2017 Author Posted December 18, 2017 (edited) Quote STATS PEAK: #19 | WEEKS ON: 16 | DEBUT: 30 March 2017 POINTS: 321.36 | CERTIFICATION: SILVER OFF THE CHART/CURRENTLY CHARTING Loop had been on my radar since mid 2016 but I was ultimately not impressed with most of her material, writing her off nearly entirely. With "As If", she completely changed my mind. Complete with wobbly, enthralling electro-tinged production and one of the year's best bridges, this is easily the most underrated pop tune of the year in my book. The first and only appearance from Loop. Quote STATS PEAK: #14 | WEEKS ON: 20 (12 in 2017) | DEBUT: 10 November 2016 POINTS: 325.24 | CERTIFICATION: SILVER OFF THE CHART/CURRENTLY CHARTING I got bored of it fast and it's not one of her best singles but "How Far I'll Go" is very catchy. It also served as a nice song to help ease the transitional period between her debut album and her features this year. The key change is kind of tragic though. The first of five appearances from Alessia Cara. Quote STATS PEAK: #3 | WEEKS ON: 8 | DEBUT: 9 November 2017 POINTS: 325.36 | CERTIFICATION: SILVER OFF THE CHART/CURRENTLY CHARTING Yet another Miguel track that I loved from the first listen. "Told You So" is an 80s inspired tune that brilliantly bridges the gap between the more rock inspired 'Wildheart' and the poppier 'War & Lesiure' while subtly commenting on our political state of mind. Purposeful pop done right The second of three appearances from Miguel. Edited December 18, 2017 by cdschart
Little Dark Age Posted December 18, 2017 Author Posted December 18, 2017 Quote STATS PEAK: #20 | WEEKS ON: 19 | DEBUT: 1 June 2017 POINTS: 325.9 | CERTIFICATION: SILVER OFF THE CHART/CURRENTLY CHARTING Apple Music is terrible for new music discovery in comparison to Spotify and yet I've got to credit it for helping me find this gem. On one of the best collaborative efforts of the year, newcomer Buddy's vocals brilliantly fold in and out of Kaytranada's exquisite production. The result is a hypnotic, glitzy and entirely relatable ode lust for companionship and love. There's something so dark and peaceful about it, almost like it's perfect for a relaxing night of driving around aimlessly -- a mood that is unfortunately ruined by the music video The first and only appearance from both Buddy and Kaytranada. Quote STATS PEAK: #19 | WEEKS ON: 18 | DEBUT: 31 August 2017 POINTS: 327.71 | CERTIFICATION: SILVER OFF THE CHART/CURRENTLY CHARTING "Sorry Not Sorry" was so underwhelming, especially coming off the heels of "Cool For the Summer", but thankfully Demi was able to turn her era around. "Tell Me You Love Me" instantly captured my attention, debuting upon release as a promotional single, climbing as high as #19 (becoming her third biggest hit on my chart) and sticking around all the way until its single release at which point it resumed climbing. This is probably the strongest single of her career and hopefully is a preview of what's to come next time around. Expecting this to gain on next year's countdown. The first and only appearance from Demi Lovato.
