ATRL Moderator Legend E Posted January 3, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted January 3, 2018 well i didn't listen to them :(
Navyofbadgals Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 Stan for Strangers, my fav Halsey song too
jacklovesyou1 Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 Not heard any of the above apart from Ponyboy.. It's different I'll give it that
K$Ellie Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 Ponyboy is such a bop she looks awkward doing the choreo but the video is still great Strangers isn't Halsey's best but still a BOP Say My Name, Bon Appetit and 10-20-40
Playa Playa Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 Lollipop is the song that was tugging at Dreams Tonite for me. Very good!
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted January 3, 2018 Author ATRL Moderator Posted January 3, 2018 30. Hyuna - BABE Spoiler Thanks jose for ruining this for me comparing it to Shape of You. Still love the "babaeh, babeh" part, and actually the whole thing. 29. Nite Jewel - 2 Good 2 Be True Spoiler This is the biggest Nite Jewel has gotten to a big "pop song" and it's mostly because of the funky synths and simplicity of the "... TRUE" hook. 28. Kesha - Boogie Feet Spoiler This song is like the victory lap of Rainbow where Kesha shows everybody she can still be the goofy "Ke$ha" everybody knew, give us empowering/self love lyrics, and give us a total banger. Kesha should record a pop punk album next it would be her magnum opus. 27. Arcade Fire - Chemistry Spoiler I KNOW there are going to be some people shaking their heads at this entry! It's the least delicate and sophisticated AF will ever do probably - and why I love it. It's a different side of them and the honky tonk vibes of it do want to make me dance. 26. Seiko Oomori - IDOL SONG Spoiler She takes a generic ABK48 type song, adds about 20 bpm and then rambles throughout half of it and adds flourishes of other genres - how to make Levi love your song 101 basically.
Dom Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 Kesha - Boogie Feet omg, hey..!! i love it. BON APPETIT A YESS, A HYMN TO BOP TO. BUT STRANGERS FT FIFTH HARMONY CHICK... SIS. I'M DISGUSTED A BITTTT... HALSEY.
cloudbusting Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 Chemistry is the last non-interlude from EN i expected to see on ANY list, but tbh? i'm not bothered by it! it's nice to see that record get love (and YAS @ that top 10 placement in your album list i'm so behind) also the switch from that almost polka-y vibe to the rock #banger portion in Chemistry is underrated
Eeveelution Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 Ponyboy and Lollipop. Boogie Feet is a nice bop from Kesha. Chemistry is an entertaining song.
Vilppu Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 Idol Song is such an entertaining track n and Boogie Feet is great. Lip & Hip was the far better Hyuna song this year.
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted January 3, 2018 Author ATRL Moderator Posted January 3, 2018 25. Lorde - Supercut Spoiler Lorde looks back on her past relationship and remembers all the good times and the great memories but deep down knows its ignoring the elephant in the room, such a beautiful track. 24. Lana Del Rey - Get Free Spoiler Lana's last song on her album is by far her most optimistic and "happy" song so far. Is it a step of a new Lana or just her giving the world and her fans the release we all need so that we can continue on during the trump presidency? Well I listen to it when I feel hopeless, thanks Lana this is probably your best song tbh. 23. Ralph - Tease Spoiler Ralph puts down a disgusting man in a breezy early 90s throwback that Shura wishes she got her hands on. The occasional specific lyric give this song character. 22. Dreamcatcher - Chase Me Spoiler It only took a few years after Babymetal combined jpop with speed metal that we would get a Kpop answer to it. They go for a more simple strategy and give us a kpop song structure but the fast paced vocals give the song a sense of urgency that never lets up. 21. Spoon - Hot Thoughts Spoiler Spoon bring a new song on their title track that takes the cheese rock of the 00s and makes it sophisticated enough for pretentious gays to like it.
Pink Matter Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 Great update! Some sings I'm not familiar with but the ones I do know are great. 10-20-40, Boogie Feet, Supercut, and Get Free are my faves I think Get Free is showing us a new direction that Lana wants to pursue in the future.
Playa Playa Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 Super & Hot Thoughts Chase Me sounds so interesting...lemme listen
Sunderland 4ever Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 Delighted to see Lollipop (Ode to Jim) getting that recognition.
World Eater Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 Wave to Anchor So many good sings here, Lollipop, I Bow Down, 10-20-40, Superbop and Hot Thoughts You CAN'T be serious with Chemistry though

ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted January 4, 2018 Author ATRL Moderator Posted January 4, 2018 I'm gonna finish today cuz I don't have time on the weekend!
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted January 4, 2018 Author ATRL Moderator Posted January 4, 2018 20. Charly Bliss - Glitter Spoiler "Am I the best or just the first person to say yes?" is SUCH A GOOD LYRIC and definitely explains infatuation well and I love songs about infatuation. I really had a hard time choosing my favorite song from them but I went with the song that got me into the album. 19. Perfume Genius - Slip Away Spoiler Perfume Genius continues having amazing jaw dropping lead singles and crappy albums. Well, he's getting better each time so by his 10th album it'll be a 4/5. 18. Danny L Harle - Happy All The Time Spoiler Why didn't Carly sing this song? Well the anonymous lady did a great job too and this is a PC music CLASSIC along with Hey QT/Hard/Keri Baby/Every Night. The fast paced happyallthetimehappyallthetime is probably the most fun thing to sing along to released by Danny and his songwriting peak so far. Like the best pop songs there's sadness beneath the happy exterior giving the song depth. 17. WJSN - Babyface Spoiler Kpop invented a new genre this year: Bubblegum funk? This is the second best song of that new genre I made up in my head that probably already existed, extremely fast tempo gives the song a lot of energy to pump me up. It's pretty much agreed upon by kpop fans that this was their best song this year, so WHY WASN'T IT A SINGLE?! 16. Cupcakke - CPR Spoiler Each and every Cupcakke release is getting more refined and well produced and this song sounds like the gay clubs she's been performing lots in so of course we love it here. Like every Cupcakke masterpiece every single line is a hit pretty much is quotable giving the song insane replay value since there's not like just one or two line you're looking for - it's the entire damn song!
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted January 4, 2018 Author ATRL Moderator Posted January 4, 2018 15. Yaeji - Raingurl Spoiler The successor to Last Breath is more dancefloor oriented than anything Yaeji has released but she still gives us the loner in her bedroom vibes enough to not sound like a sellout or something. I truly believe if she goes down the road of this and After That her album will be a masterpiece and she will be a fomo legend. She has the potential! 14. Kelela - Blue Light Spoiler Personally I think R&B is best when it's a little creepy. Kelela manages to use the state of almost being completely sold on a new relationship to be creepy, sexy, and futuristic. The vocal effects in the chorus are my fave part and let's not even get into the MUSIC VIDEO (prob my fave of the year). 13. Paramore - Rose-Colored Boy Spoiler "Low-key! No pressure! Just hang with me and my weather!" is what sold me on the new Paramore, love the message of the song ngl I feel like I'm probably the guy she's talking about in the song more than her but I love the peppy pessimism of this album overall and this song is the best representation since it's not super mopey, it's just sorta "let me be sad for a min please!". 12. Selena Gomez - Bad Liar Spoiler Selena's lack of talent overall has pushed her to stay on her toes with the sounds she uses. She was the first to go slow-sexy pop with Good For You that was huge in 2016 and early 2017, and she's managed to have semi-successful collaborations with EDM DJs, but she's smart enough to know that she needs to constantly reinvent to stay ahead of the curve so she gave us the avant garde pop song Bad Liar to give the critics reasons to love her - and reasons to stay relevant even through minor flopping. This song is pretty absurd, the sample, the random belts, the stupid ass lyrics, but somehow everything just works well. 11. Taylor Swift - Look What You Made Me Do Spoiler REPUTATION IS THE MOST DISAPPOINTING ALBUM OF THE YEAR. This song is probably her best song, not just because she "owned the snake" because that was obviously coming, but because well who else can deliver a Tim Burton style schoolgirl bully diary entry? Who else is going to give us this? NOBODY, and Taylor had the gall to not give us an album full of these?
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted January 4, 2018 Author ATRL Moderator Posted January 4, 2018 10. K.I.D - Boy (ft. Cupcakke) Spoiler Who would have thought Cupcakke would have fit in a garage rock pop song? Well what makes this song is that she feels like she totally belongs, the "tongue in my mouth / back on your couch" and "bar bathroom" lyrics already make the song a little sexually charged so when Cupcakke steals the show it feels believable. The filthy sexual lyrics are met with equal desperation that makes the song very multi-dimensional. 9. Vince Staples - BagBak Spoiler Somehow Vince's simple flow can make an artsy electronic track still sound completely hip-hop. But the reason why I chose this song over all other songs on the album is the lyrics that are super funny - but also super true and accurate. Plus he says "tell the president to suck a dick" lol. 8. Ionnalee - Not Human Spoiler I'm gonna be honest, I'm not really sure why she rebranded herself. Sure this song is a change from her last project, less shiny synths and distorted vocals and it's more darkwave/melodically oriented, but it's really not a complete reinvention. This Com Truise produced track is her best release since the synth masterpiece "Goods" stole my heart five years ago. We get a minute long 'breakdown' at the end which makes me wonder if this is tied to some interlude or part 2 on the album. Glad she's finally shedding her Fever Ray clone clown aesthetic too because yeah that was necessary. 7. Charli XCX - Lipgloss Spoiler *gonnagivethegayseverythingtheywant* in song form. Icarly references, disgustingly but hilarious sexual lyrics, gay club instrumentals, we got it all here! 6. Fever Ray - This Country Spoiler This political manifesto explodes into probably the best lyric... of all time! You know the one, but there's plenty of great stuff like the menacing synths and "i'll log off my whatever". Fever Ray blends the concepts of personal and political to argue that well, pretty much everything we do is political and every inconvenience we have is political as well.
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted January 4, 2018 Author ATRL Moderator Posted January 4, 2018 5. Zola Jesus - Exhumed Spoiler The least pop and the darkest track of her career was probably the best lead to give us hope again - she's changed, and she's BACK. The STRINGS and yells and the hard drum hits, gawd if she gave me an album full of these my heart would explode from excitement. 4. Red Velvet - Rookie Spoiler When this came out I think I listened to it like 80 times in a row. It's almost a crime that this song is so good. The "rookie lookie rookie lookie" hook is simple but effective. Who doesn't love a little experimental bubblegum funk? 3. Phoenix - J-Boy Spoiler Phoenix reinvent their signature sound and add some nu disco sparkle to it. It's nostalgic all at first listen. I can't even imagine the emotions I'll be feeling years from now. 2. Kendrick Lamar - DNA. Spoiler This song is an overwhelming explosion of emotions - it's anger, confusion, pride, and even more all in one. It's not a typical song structure and the breakdown just gets me every single TIME!!! AHH, can't believe there was a time when I preferred Humble, I really was a fool. and... #1 is...... Spoiler St. Vincent - Pills oh god. This song is like a fantasy come reality. It's everything I like in music all put into one - non traditional song structure, cartoonish hooks with a hint of weirdness/unnervingness, stupid but funny lyrics, post-ironic, etc. I mean come on. This song was made for me to enjoy and JUST me.
