Alvvays - Antisocialites

N5NICH8.jpg?1

"Pop perfection" gets tossed around a lot these days but I would actually like to say that at least FOUR of these songs meet the standard on this album, and all the others come very close.  There's something about their innocent youthful spirit that allows Alvvays to create infectious twee pop melodies that don't sound contrived or dated.

Nice list so far! I will check Kitty's album rn! I'm pretty sure I used to have some of her songs in my iPod :rip:

Alvvays are incredible, that opening stretch is just pure perfection

Phoenix’s album was pretty good! A little overlooked though for sure

Kelela could be top 10 but not complaining

Okovi is def Zola’s best album

DAMN should be higher too but still :clap3:

Good spot for Kendick, critics are going overboard with the praise for him this year lol.

I liked the Zola singles but the album just didn't stick with me?

Ti Amo > WAP, really? :-*

Okay perfect description for After Laughter. It's actually my first Paramore record :deadbanana: But I like self-titled now too!

I appreciate the Ti Amo love - definitely the fans need to give it some more appreciation. I'm still having a tough time deciding my favorite...

I agree they did go overboard but at least it's truly a good album!  I'd rather that then a mediocre one.

If you liked her EPs you'll like this album.  I think a lot of people criticize it for having lots of good but not great tracks but I personally disagree, though it's not my favorite release of her.

I don't know why the fans didn't catch on!!!!  I was living in a fantasy world where I thought Fior Di Latte would be topping everyone's list but...

The only albums I listened to from the latest updates are Cupcakke, Kelela, Paramore, and Kendrick.  I'd rank them Kelela > Paramore > Kendrick > Cupcakke tho :eli:

The Paramore album has a couple of standout songs that really clicked with me, and I’m sure that I’d really like the album as a whole if I spent more time with it... but I don’t really care enough to do so. :foot:

Dirty Projectors - Dirty Projectors

Dirty-Projectors-1487704023-compressed.j

I KNOW I KNOW I'm like 90% sure he's the jerk and Amber was right!  BUT in terms of music quality, Dave won!  It's probably not the most experimental DP album but it is definitely their most adventurous and out of the box one.  It almost sounds like a depressed vampire weekend album on cocaine?  I dunno well anyway the first two songs (lovely songs btw) are really the only two that address the breakoff in a nasty way while in the others he DOES admit he's probably an asshole in the "we're both wrong!" kinda way but you know what that means.  It definitely is something you have to commit to so it's not easy to listen to it all the way through all the time but it's a rewarding album that is a journey.  There's always some weird random noises that we get in each song to keep people like me entertained.

Arcade Fire - Everything Now

1200x630bb.jpg

This album is legendary.  And I'm not being sarcastic either!  Everything about the failure of this album sorta rolled out perfectly.  The fidget spinners, the lead single that people actually liked, the apparent screaming matches between band members.  All of this sorta give this album a legacy among the band's output.  Oh it's definitely not their best, but I do find myself bopping to all of the tracks on here yes I do.  There's something so comforting in an Arcade Fire album that's straight up tacky.  THis messy ass album where they brag about their music saving someone from suicide does actually still have, well, good music to back it up.  It's the first album where we see the cracks underneath them and see them fail spectacularly, but the spectacle itself is something I couldn't keep myself away from all year.

Susanne Sundfør - Music For People In Trouble

7nOd6Sm.jpg?1

No we didn't get another synth pop album and yes that broke my gay heart but we got probably my favorite chamber folk album in like ever.  Susanne pretty much carries the pain of all hurt lovers on her shoulders, and then a few other people too.  Word around the street is that she had like a mental breakdown after Ten Love songs so needed a more therapy based album (ok lbr I have those like twice a week and I don't make albums about it!) but anyway I hope this provided her the therapy she needed and she cleansed her mind.  Because she did with me!

Pixx - The Age of Anxiety

theageofanxiety_cover.jpg

This album IS SO UNDERRATED!!!  It's called the age of anxiety but really age of "paranoia" would fit more considering the songs.  It's a bouncy late 70s inspired Synth banger album that pretty much explores the idea of "self" and how it we act in this fast paced society.  SO original yeah.  It does it well, it's not a condemnation of modern society, more of one's self though and that makes it great cause I hate preachy ****.  Everything's Weird in America is not really about how America is horrible and awful (like people from the UK have any room to speak!) but that she feels uncertain and uncomfortable exploring new places.  This album sounds like it could have been recorded in 2012 tbh, but honestly there is no album that sounds remotely like it, so I guess time doesn't matter when it comes to unique music.

Charli XCX - Number 1 Angel

Charli this year:

I know that's been used like 200x before but well there's no better description for what Charli did to us than that.

Lorde - Melodrama

DQ4QF4p.jpg?1

If Lorde continues like this she will be the next Fiona Apple.  THERE, I said it.  Her ability to take the mental whirlwinds that one feels during the highs and lows of relationships and describe them so effectively - well, there's a talent that's unmatched by any of her peers.  Too bad she takes forever to release albums.

St. Vincent - MASSEDUCTION

pLcTlV8.jpg?1

St. Vincent's most personal album to date is her least cohesive, with the beginning being the cracked out bangers, middle being the somber ballads/personal reflections/ and the end being the heartbreak songs.  It's like three albums in one sorta but well she's a complicated person.  Much of the societal criticism of the album is also strengthened by her personal experiences.  Is she criticizing society for using pills or is she using vague capitalistic criticism as a form of self reflection?  I feel like her criticism of LA works in the same way.  Hints of breakups (romantic and platonic) are all throughout the album and the most explicit is Young Lover about Cara being a coke addict (even more addicted than annie herself) and almost dying and ****.  It's a super deprecating and very brave album from a singer who often hides behind characters and concepts for her music.  And well it's a St. Vincent album so it's filled to the brim with musical masterpieces (except new york).

Charly Bliss - Guppy

Charly-Bliss-Guppy-1492454718-compressed

This soundtrack to a late 90s or early 2000s teen flick is amazing.  Like other people have said, it sounds like CRJ singing Weezer songs and well I think that's just amazing and I could listen to it any day of the week.  The lead singer's charm is very squeaky and her personality carries the album through energetic garage pop punk taking it way above her generic peers.  It's just under 30 minutes, and you know how much I complain about long albums so it's nice to get a relatively short one.  The album is full of romantic musings ("am i the best or just the first person to say yes?" is one of the best lyrics of the year)!  I can pick a best song but yeah every single song is good, I can't imagine only liking 1-2 of these songs.

Vince Staples - Big Fish Theory

Vince-Staples-Big-Fish-Theory-Album-cove

I PROMISE it's just coincidence that this and Guppy are right next to each other.  Before this year, I never liked Vince that much.  06 had good rapping/lyrics but I thought the production was stale, and Prima Donna last year kinda interested me but it was just.... only vaguely good.  WELL this sorta took the strengths of his last two releases and got rid of all the flaws.  It pulls from UK bass and Bubblegum Bass but none of the songs besides maybe Yeah Right don't sound completely hip-hop.  Ins't it great when people give you something completely NEW but manage to make it sound comfortable and familiar?  The hip-hop bangers are full of bleep bloops but manage to sounds familiar like 90s bangers (Big Fish and Bagbak the main singles).  Another lyric of the year "put me in the moma when its over with." :-*

Fever Ray - Plunge

FeverRay_Plunge_albumart.jpg

This is the best The Knife adjacent release since Silent Shout.  Karin gave me everything I wanted!!  Catchy melodies, weird ass sounding synths, and sex lyrics that are funny, empowering, and weird.  Well i didn't know I wanted that last one from her until I got "wanna stick my fingers up your *****".  I'm not gonna write a thesis on whats empowering and whats not because I honestly don't care that much but I think it's great that we get these lyrics in these trying times.  What makes her gay lyrics on this album work is how they're frank and honest yet somehow seductive and kinda funny.  Also obviously, this album has lyric of the year and it's not the one I mentioned earlier in this recap.
