Tom Vercetti Posted December 22, 2017 Posted December 22, 2017 #25 through #21 delivered. I also haven't heard Perico's other album yet but will be getting around to that.
jose168 Posted December 22, 2017 Posted December 22, 2017 A deeper understanding was sooo pleasent to the ears.It got ragged on a bit for whatever reason but yea
SLIME Posted December 23, 2017 Author Posted December 23, 2017 i don't know how it happened was it always this way, and i just couldn't see it? heart burning hot enough for the both of us i never realized how much you were holding back all the times i felt so plugged in you were tuning out a muted channel, a cold ship, a hologram, an abyss 20. Japanese Breakfast - Soft Sounds from Another Planet Psychopomp, good as it was and even though the songs did have their own identities, was kind of a one-sided record in how it doubled down on the grief theme. Luckily JB's second album was a big step forward musically AND lyrically imo. She may have dropped the sci-fi love story concept before it could crystallize into the final product, but that same level of ambition is still present across most of the album as we got it. Opening up her toolbox to new sounds, e.g. robo-synths and distortion, paid off with her 2 best songs ever (see below), at least to my ears. Even on some of the less adventurous cuts, the melodic strength alone is enough to make sure a few of these songs sound like legit classics already. Back half sags a bit but the highs here are HIGH and just what she needed to get me real excited about the future of this project. top peeps: Diving Woman, Machinist Spoiler
SLIME Posted December 23, 2017 Author Posted December 23, 2017 (woof!) 19. Blanck Mass - World Eater I'm not sure I have the musical vocabulary to describe everything that's happening here, but the feeling I get from it is something I wish I got waaayyy more often. So if any of y'all know of similar records you can DM me or hit my line. Basically most of these tracks utilize really abrasive looping to get the jump on you right away, but as they play out they all get to develop into something beautiful in their own ****ed-up sounding way. With some of them, the noise dies down over time and your reward by the end is a nice soft(er) melody. But more often than not it's the noise itself driving these climaxes, so it creates some fascinating contrasts that can make you question what it is you're really looking for our of your music. Feels good to test your own musical boundaries! (Yeezy taught me.) Hypnotic, cathartic listening experience overall, RIP Sleigh Bells. top peeps: Please, The Rat Spoiler
SLIME Posted December 23, 2017 Author Posted December 23, 2017 I fell asleep will finish this set and do the next one tomorrow, then hopefully top 10 all at once gang gang!
SLIME Posted December 23, 2017 Author Posted December 23, 2017 karats on my neck have sex fifty seven nineties on deck runnin from demons, angels in my dream when i'm leaning tec-9 with the beam don't nobody move before this **** start ringing 18. 21 Savage, Offset & Metro Boomin - Without Warning Haaa the covers back to back. What separates this quick Halloween surprise drop from other trap albums is the way it fully COMMITS to the dark horror movie aesthetic. Metro is the big shot here no question (as he has been all year) in a big picture sense -- this **** b a n g s in the spookiest way possible -- but 21 and Offset both give star performances too that capitalize on their natural strengths better than most of their other material this year imo. Turns out they compliment each other really well too (a bit of an OutKast vibe but let's not get too crazy) with neither outshining the other too hard, and their trading verses keeps the momentum up so that I don't find myself getting sick of either. 21 is a surprisingly dynamic performer for someone who barely raises his voice past a literal mumble, and Offset in particular can stand out a lot more when he doesn't have to share flows with his relatives like hand-me-downs. Sometimes these low-stakes collaborations end up with way more payoff compared to the expectations and clutter of a full album, and case in point I would say this is one of the very best releases of its kind. top peeps: Rap Saved Me, Still Serving Spoiler
SLIME Posted December 23, 2017 Author Posted December 23, 2017 look, i apologize, often womanize took for my child to be born, see through a woman's eyes took for these natural twins to believe in miracles took me too long for this song, i don't deserve you 17. Jay-Z - 4:44 Jay was a little late to the train of Life Is Good/Compton-style mature dad rap albums, but if he had to take longer to make sure this wasn't another Magna Carta disaster then I can't blame him. Most of the conversation about this album was obviously about the lyrical content and how it fits into the Lemonade/ElevatorGate narratives, and whatever you think about Jay as a person this does feel like his most honest and personal statement. It's refreshing to hear him open up about his flaws and life so candidly after a period where his boasts seemed to have been getting emptier and emptier. But what I hope hasn't gotten lost in the mix is just how good these BEATS are. I'd say people just don't just sample like this anymore, but honestly no one ever really sampled like this at any time. There's something about how the vocals weave in and out of the instrumentals that feels genuinely new and not just like an old head's attempt to stay current. The way familiar voices come and go adds up to something expensive and intimate, which is kind of a new combo for him even at this stage in his career. Shows sometimes you just gotta put No I.D. on track to let the story begin. top peeps: The Story of O.J., 4:44 Spoiler
Playa Playa Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 You don't know how I happy I was when I first listened to 4:44 People (including myself) were really putting Jay in the same sentence as Em for rappers that have fell off and then he came with the heat. It's such a good album and necessary for his legacy. And I agree–Jay's input is obviously substantial but it wouldn't nearly have been as successful without No I.D's vision guiding the show. “The Story of OJ” and “4:44” are also two of his best production work ever.

SLIME Posted December 24, 2017 Author Posted December 24, 2017 there's a buzzard of gulls they're drumming in the wind only lovers alive running in the dark 16. Slowdive - Slowdive I think the fact that I barely knew who Slowdive were prior to this year and still got swept up into the comeback hype speaks to the quality of the music here. These new songs play more like spaced out dream pop than the shoegaze they came up on the scene with (if shoegaze is even a genre idk), but that part of their heritage becomes obvious once again when you listen to the way these songs are layered -- soo much to focus on. There's a lot of weight to the music that feels almost like an acknowledgement of all the time the band's taken off and what that might mean for all involved. I think it's balanced well though with the potential for zoning out as a listener, leaving it open for us to make our memories now that it's actually out there in the world. Big stuff. top peeps: Go Get It, Star Roving Spoiler

I'm glad he figured out what he needed to do and came thru, I'd say it's one of his better albums even. 10 hours ago, Vxspertine said: Your list is one of the most different and interesting lists I've seen so far, I don't know some albums and other albums I enjoyed, but they didn't really stick with me. Tom Vercetti Posted December 26, 2017 Posted December 26, 2017 "Less bandcampy and more studio" is a description I saw for Soft Sounds and I would kind of agree on that. Slowdive's ST being a lot of people's first album from them is interesting. I'd suggest most to visit Souvlaki if they haven't already and liked the ST. On a side note, I love how both World Eater & Without Warning's covers are dog related (assuming the animal on World Eater's is infact a canine).
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 26, 2017 ATRL Moderator Posted December 26, 2017 Japanese Breakfast is the best in ur top 20 so far
