ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 12, 2017 ATRL Moderator Posted December 12, 2017 Hope to see Rina and Yaeji (and maybe Red Velvet?)
Tom Vercetti Posted December 12, 2017 Author Posted December 12, 2017 10. David Bowie - No Plan EP No Plan was released around Bowie's birthday and included both soty 2016 and three extra tracks from his Lazarus Broadway show. The best track (No Plan) offers a similar melancholic touch and theme of death that Blackstar had and I could see it being an extra on there. The other two are decent add on's. I'm kinda glad these weren't on Blackstar but they work on their own side collection. Tracks to check out: No Plan Spoiler 9. Yaeji - EP2 The thing I like most about yaeji are those atmospheric and wavy productions that are easy to get lost in. There are times when she gets the job done vocally to add on that hypnotic feel. I believe her first self titled ep deserved a bit more attention, but ep2 was destined to be her “breakout” effort. Raingurl (the fan favorite) along with drink I’m sippin on and the improved passionfruit cover achieved the goal of getting her name more in the spotlight. She definitely has potential to do better on a debut album. Tracks to Check Out: Raingurl/Passionfruit Spoiler 8. Schwefelgelb - Dahinter das gesicht Full of captivating and energetic techno beats, Schwefelgeib (an ebm duo from Germany) made me feel like i'm in an industrial rave. Each of the four tracks on this EP have their own rhythm thus making this EP avoid that samey feel. Tracks to Check Out: Fokus/Aus dem Hals der Flasche Spoiler 7. Pertubator - New Model New Model is a dark synth-wave world that sounds like it could be in a OST for a post apocalyptic horror film. As Pertubator stated himself, it wasn't meant for happy moods, but rather expressing the underlying cold emotions he had while making the EP. It's a more gloomy approach in sound compared to his previous upbeat material. I felt the EP captured his intended atmosphere perfectly and while I could do without the track that contained some questionable vocal lyrics (vantablack), the rest all make up for it in execution. Tracks to check out: Tactical Precision Disarray/Tainted Empire Spoiler 6. I Hate Models - Totsuka No Tsurugi This year I wanted to be exposed to more techno tunes and what I got here was one of my favorites it had to offer this year. The first track alone took me on a ride and honestly it overshadows the rest of the EP due to how giant it is. Not that it's a negative for me, the ep has plenty of melodic techno to offer. Tracks to Check Out: Eternal Loneliness Spoiler
Vxspertine Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 Bowie and Yaeji Lemme bookmark I Hate Models
SLIME Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 Bowie slaying from beyond the grave what else is new. My instinct is to say the Passionfruit cover is better than the OG but I would be lying tbh, #teamyaeji all the way though.
Tom Vercetti Posted December 12, 2017 Author Posted December 12, 2017 5. Dedekind Cut - The Expanding Domain I was impressed with Dedekind's minor follow up to $uccessor and with contributions from Zach Hill, Prurient, Elysia Crampton, and Mica Levi, he was able to execute both irrational & seemly touching moments throughout the project. And by that I mean the EP progresses from soft ambience to a rough industrial landscape (with the help of Prurient’s synths and Zach’s percussion on the title track), to the concluding Piano play from Elysia. All throughout five tracks, there's a sense of progression and the journey was short yet memorable. Tracks to Check Out: Lil Puffy Coat, The Expanding Domain Spoiler 4. Skee Mask - 2012 Quality breakbeats, kick drums, techno and ambient soundscapes all in one. My favorite electronic EP of the year goes to this. Tracks to check out: Fjorward Flex Dub/Kordman Return (Swing Mix) Spoiler 3. Rina Sawayama - Rina Hey look, another cool pop discovery. As a Clarence Clarity fan, when I found out he was producing her ep (since he seemed to promote this more than his own upcoming material) I decided to see what the fuss was about. I enjoyed Rina's early 2000 pop melodies and style. In case some of you needed extra evidence on why some of these tracks (especially Take Me) sound like nods to Britney, Clarence is a huge stan. Goes to show her impact. I always loved how noisy/glitchy his production is, which adds to the fun of the tracks. Tracks to Check Out: Take Me As I Am/10-20-40/ Cyber Stockholm Syndrome Spoiler 2. Elucid - Valley Of Grace Top notch abstract rap over industrial and experimental production. Elucid's an underground rapper who has traveled across South Africa for theme inspiration on this cohesive ep. Filled with thought provoking lyricism and unpredictability, Valley captured me with ease. Tracks to check out: Colonizers Corpse, No Release, Strength is Admired Humanity is denied Spoiler
jose168 Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 i forgot all about bowies 2017 output. I preferred Killing a little time, so good
Tom Vercetti Posted December 12, 2017 Author Posted December 12, 2017 And my Favorite EP of the year goes to.... 1. Denzel Curry - 13 13 minutes of effective hard hitting trap bangers. Fueled from start to finish and straight to the point. It's just how I like it. Denzel has been on a lowkey streak lately, riding off the Imperial hype and his sessions with Badbadnotgood. The way the beats, the delivery and even the features are energetic shows the potential in him in becoming one the upcoming top dogs. Tracks to check out: Bloodshed, Hate Government, Zeltron 6 Billion Spoiler
Vxspertine Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 (edited) Yas Rina Haven't heard of Denzel Curry but from your description it really seems like I should have. Lemme give him a listen right now Edited December 12, 2017 by Vxspertine
SLIME Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 YES BRUTHA!!! I will have more to say later ofc but so shocked this didn't generate more conversation at least the places I was looking (i don't remember how i found it :rip:). My favorite new school rapper 5 sure

World Eater Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 What a list Loved 13, great pick for the top spot Saw Denzel live last week and it was a total mess though, but this is another story Also loved RINA, The Expanding Domain, Dahinter das gesicht and EP2. Somehow still haven't gotten around to listen to No Plan though
Playa Playa Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 Man..Both 2012 and ISS02 (late release) are wonderful. Fjorward Flex Dub was my fave between the two. Yaeji and Rina are two upcoming artists that deserve the hype they are getting imo. Glad to see them here But it appears I slept on Denzel Curry's stuff this year? Welp. It's never too late to listen, I guess
K$Ellie Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 Rina's EP was cute, Take Me As I Am is a bop
prézli Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 I'm disappointed. David Bowie should have been the #1.
