it's the least interesting song, it has no soul or life in it and is just an instant skip

60. Wednesday Campanella - Superman (J-Pop)

5491688010_001.jpg

Spoiler

Really fun production + vibrant melodies. If only the album was at strong from start to finish as the first few tracks.

Highlights: Aladdin, Ikkyu-san, Kamehameha the Great

59. Karen Gwyer - Rembo (Techno/House)

rembo_karengwyer.jpg

Spoiler

When I noticed that each odd song title starts off with a question and the following even track answers it, my mind was blown :sherlock: Rembo is pretty busy with dance tunes that are reminiscent of the classic Detroit techno style.

Highlights: The Workers Are on Strike,  Why Does Your Father Look So Nervous, He's Been Teaching Me To Drive

58. Upper Wilds - Guitar Module 2017 (Noise Rock)

Guitar-Module-2017.jpg

Spoiler

A bandcamp'd album gem that's loud, aggressive and really defines what noise rock is capable of. By the time it starts, it practically finishes.

Highlights: Roy Sullivan, UFO, Let's Build A Moon

57. Caligula's Horse - In Contact (Progressive Metal)

71NvNG HWTL._SY355_.jpg

Spoiler

There's a mixture of clean and melodic vocals with amusing rhythms and steady guitar riffs that gets the job done. With most progressive rock or metal albums, they're usually carried by some kind of concept or story and with in contact, it involves the connection of humans through love and eras of renaissance despite dissimilarity. Throughout the album there's soft sections, with even a spoken word in there, that support the album's narrative. For prog fans, it should hold some appeal for sure.

Highlights: Will's Song (Let The Colours Run), Songs for No One. Graves

56. Laura Marling - Semper Femina (Chamber Folk)

kLaura-Marling-Semper-Femina-Albumcover-©Kobalt-Music-e1488975264574.jpg

Spoiler

Semper Femina's title and theme with the help of a translation, is about femininity/the relationship of women. With the help of Blake Mills production & acoustic styled instrumentation, the album certainly has that cozy folk sensation around it. Laura's voice is usually calm and soothing (pun kind of intended) so the elements come together nicely. There's some extra touches along this record that I didn't expect till the near end like the electric guitar breakdown on Nothing, Not Nearly. I wouldn't say this is her best album, but still a pleasant listen.

Highlights: Soothing, Wild fire, Next time

55. JMSN - Whatever Makes U Happy (R&B)

jmsn.jpg

Spoiler

Whatever makes u happy is another relatively short length 8 track lp (like Freddie's you only live 2wice) and while i believe it offers a "all killer, no filler" experience with a laid back approach, the only criticism i can think of is that it's more of the same for him. Ever since his self titled, he's been around a similar sound path and i'd wish for him to experiment a bit more to keep things interesting.

Highlights: Always Somethin, Slowly, Drinkin

54. Deepchord - Auratones (Dub/ambient Techno)

artworks-000248079176-vjgvy8-t500x500.jpg

Spoiler

Deepchord was a discovery for me last year and i'm glad to have made that find just for the relaxing underwater-like atmosphere he creates through pads and synths. It's mostly a mellow and aquatic experience.  Some tracks the pace is picked up (devil ray could very well be an uptempo club track) while others like Azure just more purely ambient.

Highlights: Devil Ray, Point Reyes, Azure, Portofino

53. Charlotte Gainsbourg - Rest  (Art Pop)

PopUpCharlotteGainsbourgRestHome-365x365.jpg

Spoiler

Rest was an solid first listen, as I had no experience with her music prior to 2017 and all I knew was that she was related to French Legend Serge Gainsbourg. Talent runs in the family after all. Rest offers a mix of pop/funk/disco and even shoegazey elements which makes the album an adventurous soundscape with the help of SebastiAn production. Not to mention that parts of the album are also in French. Lyrically it's simple yet personal due to the background of this album being revolved around deceased relatives. Good for her in using music to express not only sorrow moods but also lighthearted measures.

Highlights: Rest, Deadly Valentine, Syvlia Says

52. Lana Del Rey - Lust For Life (Pop)

gRqBDWr.jpg

Spoiler

I appreciate Lana for having her own "give the fans everything they want" experience but the outcome turned out to be on the bloated side for me. For the highs that exist, the lows are draining and begging to be skipped. Clocking at around 70 minutes, that's a whole lot of Lana but how much of that Lana is really needed? For me LFL is inconsistent, but still enjoyable with the help of editing and it's nice to see a more upside aspect from her. It's also her most varied album with some more replayable moments than Honeymoon.

Highlights: Love, Summer Bummer, When The World Was At War, Heroin, Get Free

51. The Doppelgangaz - Dopp Hopp (Hip Hop)

76987-dopp-hopp.jpg

Spoiler

There's something about this Duo's style that speaks to me. They're easy going and they have an appealing classic hip hop sound supported by the bass, drums and samples present . From G-Funky Roll Flee to laid back E.W.W, there's a various amount of vibes Dopp Hopp possesses. It's a straightforward experience of homage.

Highlights: Roll Flee,  I've Been, Boston Beard, Olympics

I'm an obsessed Coachella Hater. Also not really a fan of LFL title track anymore. Don't care for God Bless, In My Feelings or the track with Stevie Nicks either.

Brutalism was so good, I'll never forgive myself missing out their set on on this festival I've been to this summer :jonny:

Whatever Makes U Happy was solid but I quickly forgot he'd released this :rip:

Semper Femina :clap3:

Wasn't expecting LfL that high  Love as a highlight is debatable but the rest are pretty spot on. the lowkey Honeymoon shade wasn't nice either :-*

Upper Wilds, Our exclusive darlings. :clap3: Their album deserved more attention

Poor Lana :chick3: she lost (but this is actually a decent placement, and no lies in that writeup if I ignore the subtle Honeymoon shade).

Aside from HATE, your highlights are the tea; just missing Cherry and Change. x

Oh, and loved the Fiona Apple clone album.

JMSN, Lana (a tad low, no? :thing:), and Charlotte :clap3:

I don't mind that Whatever Makes U Happy is similar to It is. but what dragged WMUH down was the fact that there was very little variety within the album. It is. had many different styles of instrumentation (which made it a much more enjoyable listen for me) while I can't say the same for WMUH. I do hope he goes for something different with his next album though.

Laura and Wednesday Campanella were amazing, both should be higher than JMSN and L4L at least x

wouldn't say this is his best album,

Poor Laura.

I agree that LFL is long but it's obvs too low.

And stay away from Head First unless you like, really, love their other albums. :rip:
