Tom Vercetti Posted December 23, 2017 Author Posted December 23, 2017 50. Lana Del Rey ft A$ap Rocky & Playboi Carti - Summer Bummer (Alt Pop/Trap) Spoiler I never expected Summer Bummer to be my go-to from the get go but it's the most infectious. Lana has previously hinted and played around with hip hop elements before and here she's fully aware of her surroundings. Playboi's duty isn't necessarily verse play, but providing those background adlibs that helps keep the listener engaged. A$ap's role is standard, but the real charmer is the chorus and Lana's tone . When the backing vocals kick in around the 2nd and final chorus, those to me are some of the best moments. It doesn't fail to stay in my head afterwards. The early backlash against it was pretty amusing to witness. 49. French Montana ft Swae Lee - Unforgettable (Hip Hop/R&B) Spoiler If it wasn't for Swae Lee, ooh boy. I believe this was a big hit as well since I heard it alot in my area. The thing with French Montana is that he seems to have that hot single every once in a while (Lockjaw from last year as an ex.) and Unforgettable is another one of those plain fun joints. 48. Gorillaz ft D.R.A.M - Andromeda (Electropop) Spoiler I believe Andromeda feels like the most Gorillaz like track the album even offered since it wasn't crowded in features and had optimal focus on Damon Albarn's presence. The recurrent spacey synths really compliments the song's theme. 47. MGMT - Little Dark Age (Synthpop) Spoiler I can't believe I wasn't feeling it at first but I had to get used to their vocals. The 80s new wave/The Cure aesthetic they're going for is kinda cool? The production is def a standout and towards the outro when it really shines. Their best song post Congratulations. 46. SZA - Broken Clocks (R&B) Spoiler SZA being The breakout girl of this year was surprising for me since last year I thought her career would forever be on stall due to TDE priorities. I'm glad she came through and provided one of my favorites CTRL tracks which I feel is quite underrated. The River Tiber production and lyric matter revolving around being stuck at work with no break hits a spot. She wasn't able to completely juggle having leisure/relationship goals and the grind at the same time trying to get her work done, and she still finds a way to be optimistic despite these troubles. 45. Laurel Halo - Moontalk (Ambient/Art Pop) Spoiler There's so many things happening all at once that it's impossible for me to not to be attentive of it every time I listen. It evokes a bouncing feeling and although I still can't fully comprehend the Japanese chorus it possesses, it mixes appropriately with the skewed sounds that are also present. 44. Forest Swords - The Highest Flood (Ambient Dub) Spoiler The collage of voice samples, the epic tribal sound, the percussion, just pieces of the song that appeals to the senses. 43. Gas - Narkopop 5 (Ambient Techno) Spoiler After exploring Gas's catalog and being impressed by his past work (Pop in particular) I was hyped for Narkopop. Wolfgang Voigt has the ability to provide an immersive experience through the use of loops, layering and texture. What caught my attention the most out of Narkopop was the 5th track, as it features a pulsating techno beat that only intensifies as the song goes on.
Same Ol' Mistakes Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 (edited) This set is an event EDIT: I was talking about the previous one. I love this set, too. Unforgettable, Summer Bummer, Broken Clocks and Little Dark Age Edited December 23, 2017 by Same Ol' Mistakes
Tom Vercetti Posted December 23, 2017 Author Posted December 23, 2017 42. The Horrors - Machine (Industrial Rock) Spoiler Nine Inch Nail's impact. The Horrors offered a variety of different sounding tracks this year (synthpop. post punk, garage punk,) but I found Machine to be more desirable for my taste. It has enough grit and metallic sense within the instrumental to allow a convincing performance from them. 41. Kelly Lee Owens ft Jenny Hval - Anxi (Art Pop/Techno) Spoiler I'm always fond of Jenny Hval's hypnotic voal presence and when mixed with already alluring and mesmerizing production from Kelly, the combined result is a clear success. 40. Calvin Harris ft Frank Ocean & Migos - Slide (Nu Disco/EDM) Spoiler A refreshing change of pace for Calvin and I believed this deserved more commercial success. He managed to pull off the tropical approach without it sounding dated or redundant. While Frank is the appealer for me Migos also adds to the pack and doesn't feel out of place either. 39. Slowdive - Sugar For The Pill (Shoegaze) Spoiler Sugar For The Pills contains one of their most lush choruses that's hard to ignore in the long run and the mood sets right in from the very beginning. 38. Alvvays - In Undertow (Dream Pop) Spoiler Molly Her gentle voice over the shoegazey guitar. 37. Grizzly Bear - Losing All Sense (Indie Rock) Spoiler I'm glad they eventually made this a single because this was one of my favorites on first listen due to the melody + oldies rock inspired production. 36. Jefre Cantu-Ledesma - A Song Of Summer (Hypnagogic Pop/Shoegaze) Spoiler It's a huge captivating wall of sound with the mix of shoegaze/ambient and surreal vocals that's often drowned out and the music mostly speaks for itself here.

Price of Fame Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 Summer Bummer is disgusting. Most of the rest in this set tho
Playa Playa Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 (edited) Unforgettable is dope but my least fave of the "French Montana's 1 Hot Single Per Year" bunch. Anxi, Slide, Moontalk, In Undertow & The Highest Flood I'm mad with myself that I didn't listen to Narkopop enough. Same with Jefre's album but that song you chose is the standout. ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 23, 2017 ATRL Moderator Posted December 23, 2017 Summer Bummer, Broken Clocks and Slide Sugar for the Pill was nice too

Eeveelution Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 Summer Bummer is a bop. Broken Clocks is... not the song I would have chosen for her. Moontalk, In Undertow, Anxi and especially Sugar for the Pill tho.
Αnt Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 Summer Bummer is one of the best songs on LFL. I never was a fan of Broken Clocks, so many better tracks.
Ewan Chaos Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 Exactly how I would describe Andromeda in an album full of more collabs than usual for them. Machine & Slide are good picks from those albums! As for MGMT, I'm waiting until the album to listen to new new (mainly cuz I didn't know they had new new coming until like a few weeks ago lol)

World Eater Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 Stan for A Song of Summer Moontalk, Anxi., Slide and SFTP tho The Highest Flood was also nice but I felt like nothing particularly stood out from the album

DAP Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 Yas let them know. Lana should look into midtempo hip hop as that suits her a lot and created her best work by far.
ATRL Moderator Legend E Posted December 23, 2017 ATRL Moderator Posted December 23, 2017 Summer Bummer
theblackestday Posted December 24, 2017 Posted December 24, 2017 What a set Summer Bummer getting its deserved recognition The Highest Flood is just amazing and definitely the standout on the album imo. Calvin Harris ft Frank Ocean & Migos - Slide 39. Slowdive - Sugar For The Pill 38. Alvvays - In Undertow These are all great as well.

potent Posted December 24, 2017 Posted December 24, 2017 Summer Bummer and Slide I'm seeing that Slowdive song around I didn't even realize they were a 90s band, maybe I need to check. MGMT is another one I slept on this year but Time to Pretend might be one of my favorite songs of the 2000s decade its so good.
