Loving the Charlotte, Tyler, Perfume Genius, and Kelela tracks. yeah damn drake, it would've been so much better like i really don't see the need for that skit, or at least put it as an interlude or something 10 hours ago, AlexisNeiers said: I feel so bad for ignoring this because your list is serving Proud, XXX., Drugs, Hot Thoughts, Siphon, Everything Now, America, Blue Train Lines, Lex oxalis, Boredom, Boys, Slip Away, even Silver (!), Passionfruit and Waitin, WHEW It's actually one of her three good songs La Loose is still my fav, she (somehow) did THAT ay no prob, what a huge list of great songs (and phew finally someone agrees on america, i loved hang as a whole too). la loose is fantastic as well silver is a career highlight to me too 4 hours ago, Mark Rih said: Passionfruit my fave from this set I also like Waitin and Fake Happy yas passionfruit is one of drake's best songs for sure, it's so hypnotic and catchy 4 hours ago, Topmaster 2 said: Future Islands Glad Everything Now flopped it really was as bad as everyone is saying
volition Posted December 22, 2017 Author Posted December 22, 2017 (edited) Top Songs of 2017: 70 - 61: 70. What's That Perfume That You Wear? - Jens Lekman First of all I absolutely can't stand that album cover, I hate noses I'm so sorry. Still, I can never deny pop music like this. I have minor gripes with the way his voice sound, but I can put them aside because the lyrics are quite evocative and the production is kinda tropical and fun. Also I'm a huge sucker for steel pans and I'm aiming to buy one at one point. Spoiler 69. Sugar for the Pill - Slowdive When that opening guitar comes in... whew. This is one of the most lowkey moments on the album from these guys, but it's so pure and affecting because the melody is just phenomenal. And then after that chorus, that repeated guitar line... whew x2. Definitely one of the most beautiful songs I've heard all year. Spoiler 68. Honey - Kehlani How does Kehlani release this overlong album that was pretty average, but then follow up with this single that pretty much trumps all of the album. It's super simple, just a couple strums of acoustic guitar and Kehlani's wonderful voice, but it separates itself from like, an Ed Sheeran song, because its lyrics are actually not terrible. She sings about her bisexuality, and her feelings for this one woman, whether this is love. Spoiler 67. Work Together - Dirty Projectors I gotta say that the new glitchy direction of these guys is actually kinda endearing, even if it fails at some points. This song however is a success to me, especially in that breakdown. The little touches of instrumentation here and there seem precise and refined, even if the song has kind of an erratic vibe. Spoiler 66. J-Boy - Phoenix Don't forget about these guys! Whew a nu-disco banger. How could you not enjoy production that sparkly and optimistic. OK maybe it could be irritating depending on your mood but whatever it's still fun af. Spoiler 65. Sticky - Ravyn Lenae This is a really nice upbeat R&B song. Ravyn's vocals are so high-pitched and expressive, and this song oozes a kind of palpable sexual desire. The chorus recalls all sorts of past R&B divas, yet overall the song still has a very contemporary flair to it. Spoiler 64. 9 (After Coachella) [feat. MØ and SOPHIE] - Cashmere Cat I am a sucker for this kind of stuff. MØ's part is kind of serviceable; it's the Cashmere Cat & SOPHIE bubblegum bass / wonky stuff in the production that makes this a highlight from Cashmere Cat's album (was it an EP? icr). Spoiler 63. Dum Surfer - King Krule There's so much I love about this song. It feels super disgusting but not enough to actually repulse me which is nice. The lyrics are great, the production is like, indie rock/post-punk but lets just throw some jazz in there too (which is actually really necessary and adds a lot to the song), the vocal melody is pretty much perfect for what the song is trying to do. I'm just a fan of everything about it. Spoiler 62. raingurl - yaeji I'm so glad everyone is putting this one on their lists, because damn is it a banger. I swear I've like, choreod this in my head when I'm walking around or something. Also someting about the lyrics of the chorus (pre-hook?) combined with that deadpan delivery is really funny, in the right way. Then of course there's the hook itself, which puts this song firmly in the banger category. Spoiler 61. Liability - Lorde I've never really been much for basic piano ballads, but this one really makes you catch feels.m4a. Feeling like a liability is pretty awful, and Lorde is pretty convincing at relaying this experience, evidenced in the way she vocalises 'every perfect summer's eating me alive', or the passage at the beginning about swaying alone. volition Posted December 23, 2017 Author Posted December 23, 2017 Top Songs of 2017: 60 - 51: 60. Under - Sampha James Blake vibes are strong here. I prefer when Sampha is doing a little more interesting stuff with the production, so this song stood out. The talk of waves coming over him, the fading out of under, under, under..., the for AIIIIIR, such a passionate vocal performance, are all winning moments. The production is lovely and captivating. Spoiler 59. 10-20-40 - Rina Sawayama THIS is the best song on her EP. I'm inclined to call it a perfect pop song because once it begins, you're just hooked straight away. Convincing vocal performance, crazy production by legend Clarence Clarity, and non-vapid lyrical subject matter, it's a euphoric listen and embodies what I think radio pop should sound like. Spoiler 58. Boyish - Japanese Breakfast There may be more accomplished songs on the album, but I've selected this one because it feels so nostalgic. It's a doo-wop song retaining the album's indie rock feeling and doesn't it also feel kind of Christmassy? Her vocals blend into the instrumentation on this one, and it gives off such a noticeable sadness. Spoiler 57. Away Away - Ibeyi Can we point out how gorgeous these two sound together? Anyway, this is one of the simpler cuts on Ash, but the melodies are excellent and the autotuned moments are tasteful and contribute to the song's aesthetic well. Spoiler 56. Saturnz Barz (feat. Popcaan) - Gorillaz This fusion of dancehall and electronic music is a highlight from the ultimately messy and scattered Humanz. Popcaan's parts are really enjoyable, but it's those little parts from the legend in between that really make the song for me. Spoiler 55. Insecurities - Syd Excellent R&B track here, Syd sings about how her insecurities kept her in a relationship she was unhappy with, but ultimately she was able to get over them and be strong enough to leave. Production change halfway through the song is really nice too. Spoiler 54. De Plata - Rosalía What a song, whew. This flamenco nuevo track is so alluring, and dark, but it's also fantastic. The guitar work is a perfect accompaniment to that voice, which vibrates and warbles and moves back and forward and completely captivates the listener. It's hauntingly beautiful. Spoiler 53. Century - Feist Loving the rockier feel on this one. Really well-written song, thoughtful lyrics here, and of course her characteristic voice amplifies the song further. Then the track seems to finish, but we get Jarvis Cocker coming in with some useful information that he Googled, before going into an outro that just stops. It's is very well-written in the way that it manipulates tension. Spoiler 52. Pure Comedy - Father John Misty A perfect opener for a huge album, this song pretty much embodies the whole thing. FJM is a bit of a tool but I'm gonna buy into his whole shtick because why not. His take on the origin of man is well-sung, he's a great singer, but there's so many interesting moments in the lyrics, just like the other songs on his album, that make this an engaging song to listen to. Spoiler 51. To The Moon And Back - Fever Ray From the beginning, this really recalls the title track of The Knife's Silent Shout, with that kind of ball bouncing in a room line. Both The Knife and her solo work are so musically accomplished in general, but especially in the production. The song feels so mechanical, that zapping ball part is essentially the chorus, with a few verses with an appropriate melody, and of course, THAT lyric. Spoiler

Lazuli Posted December 24, 2017 Posted December 24, 2017 Under, 10-20-40, Boyish, Saturn Barz, Insecurities and Century WHEW
Sunderland 4ever Posted December 24, 2017 Posted December 24, 2017 Under and Boyish are my faves. Nope, can't get into Father John Misty's music.
volition Posted December 28, 2017 Author Posted December 28, 2017 (edited) Top Songs of 2017: 50 - 41: 50. To Follow & Lead - Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith This is an art pop song, but it has a wide range of influences, from electronic to psychedelia. Vocally and lyrically it's quite simple, but the production is nuanced and accomplished, and the 'put a little focus in the way that I move' hook is quietly captivating. also fr*ck the single cover is different oh well that's the album cover and the single one is on the video Spoiler 49. Mythological Beauty - Big Thief This is one of the best songs off of Capacity for sure. It's so beautiful and dreamy that it can be easy to overlook the lyrics, but you shouldn't because they are so detailed and autobiographical and overall the song is just really well-written and incredible. Spoiler 48. Mercury - Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly, James McAlister, Bryce Dessner I included album opener Neptune earlier on this list, so it's kind of fitting that the closer Mercury appeared too. It's really simple, and that's what makes it more exceptional, because the guitar work is affecting despite its simplicity, and so is Sufjan's vocal performance. A perfect closer to the album. Spoiler 47. Get it Together (feat. Black Coffee & Jorja Smith) - Drake Best song on More Life for sure, even better than Passionfruit. Drake and Jorja's smooth voices complement each other so well, and the dancehall vibe benefits from the presence of the jazzy piano. It's an upbeat song, but it feels so nostalgic. Another addition to Drake's impressive catalogue of highlights. Spoiler 46. On Hold - The xx This song is beautiful, mostly due to Jamie's consistently impressive production and melancholic vocal performance, even with the simple melody it's enough to sound lush and expressive. I was unsure of the sample on first listen, but it grew on me and I think it greatly adds to the song. Spoiler 45. Losss - Bjork This is Bjork doing her best Homogenic impression, but with the contribution of the flute direction she went with for Utopia. A complaint with some of Bjork's newer material is that it can be said to often eschew melody for experimental flair or inaccessibility, but Loss is a firm argument against that as it has a really lovely melody descending at the end of each line. There's some Hunter-esque trip hop drums in the back which greatly support the song, and Bjork's lyrics are as interesting as her vocal performance is engaging. Spoiler 44. 日出東方 唯我不敗 - Tzusing A slice of East Asian-inspired industrial techno. I have a lot of respect for musicians of these genres, as it seems so difficult to carry out a musical vision with such refinement. This is the first track of the album, and it sets up Tzusing's mission statement very well. It's pretty masterful rhythmically, with an obvious attention to detail. Spoiler 43. Three Rings - Grizzly Bear The percussion sticks out first with this one. Definitely some influences of In Rainbows-era Radiohead on here. The song slowly develops by building up tension, with the guitar work always being just as necessary and nothing more. Vocal performance is beautiful too, but I really do love the sound of that guitar. It's in the final minute of the song that it really becomes something special.. Spoiler 42. XO Tour Llif3 - Lil Uzi Vert If it weren't for one other mega smash, I'd call this THE defining hit of 2017. You know, zeitgeist, ethos, those kinds of words. It's hard to ignore its impact when looking at it just as a song standing on its own, but it's that hook, those words that anyone who hears the song will remember, that made this song achieve what it did. People sing along to it like some generational anthem. Spoiler 41. Third of May / Ōdaigahara - Fleet Foxes This song is just such a massive epic. I don't know how else to describe it, it's so complex and layered and rich, and both musically and lyrically evocative. A spiritual experience indeed. Definitely a huge musical accomplishment and as I write this I'm struggling to remember why it's so low, but I'm not changing the list now so yeah. The outro is perfect btw.
