Eeveelution Posted December 19, 2017 Posted December 19, 2017 Power Corrupts is an edgy Masseduction choice. XXX, Ponyboy and Drugs are great and Selfish Love is one of the best things Jessie did this year
volition Posted December 19, 2017 Author Posted December 19, 2017 Top Songs of 2017: 90 - 81: 90. Siphon - Zola Jesus Written after a friend's attempted suicide, this Okovi standout is a plea for that person to see the light, to realise the people that are there for that person (hence 'we' instead of 'I'), with bleeding out being a metaphor for death. The chorus is powerful and the whole song is backed up with the industrial-lite sound she used on the rest of the album. Spoiler 89. White Gum - Iglooghost BANGER. Think PONYBOY but on steroids. This wonky track goes in like 20 different directions at once; mechanical sounds glitch from side to side while sped up vocal samples zoom around and random blips and beeps bounce around everywhere. There's so many details to this track, but they all contribute to a song that feels both crazy and euphoric. Spoiler 88. Hate The Way I Love You - Loreen It seems like Loreen moved into a different musical direction with her recent album, not that I've checked out her earlier music, but apparently the shift to an indie rock inspired dream pop was polarising amongst fans. This song is more than 6 minutes long and it's basically one big build up towards a massive chorus at the end. The instrumentation, melody, and vocal performance all build up the suspense throughout the first part of the song, ready for the catharsis. Also the sentiment is very relatable (to me ). Spoiler 87. Oatmeal - Sudan Archives Beginning with a little pizzicato string arpeggio and some interesting percussion, this fairly short track then moves into a really smooth and delicate chorus that feels so soft and gentle. The phrase after the chorus is super cool. You can really feel the African influences here, especially in the instrumentation. Spoiler 86. Spaceship - Kesha Now I definitely haven't minded Kesha's earlier work, but this album is easily her best and it succeeds on so many levels. I think it's because she has actual Nashville roots, why her country transition actually worked while others' did not. Hunt You Down was an early favourite, but this song proved to be more affecting over time. Strong country vibes here, but the spaceship theme is a moving metaphor for death, and those oohs and yeahs in the chorus are perfect. Spoiler 85. Something To Remember Me By - The Horrors Not the first, nor the last time a rock band decides to go into an alternative dance direction. Fortunately (or unfortunately?) I never listened to their earlier work so I can't be disappointed. This closing track off of V is so danceable and it feels pretty well crafted to me. That hook is definitely not forgettable either. Spoiler 84. Ofakombolo - Jupiter & Okwess Speaking of African music, this song is also short but it's really effective at getting you pumped. It's high tempo for sure. There's a lot of influences in here; the song is kind of like a rock track but with Jupiter's Congolese rhythm influences on his music giving the song its obvious African vibe. Spoiler 83. Forgiveness - Alice Glass The situation that Alice went through for so long is deeply horrifying and hugely changes the effects of her songs on the listener, both solo and with Crystal Castles. However, it lends a real triumph to this track on her EP, and I think it just edges out Natural Selection as a favourite. I love the harshness of her new music and I think her full length album could be excellent with a bit of refinement of the ideas she has. Spoiler 82. Everything Now - Arcade Fire It's a shame about the album, because this shameless ABBA pastiche is pretty glorious. It retains that classic Arcade Fire feel that most of their best songs (Neighbourhood #1, Sprawl II, Reflektor) possess, but the disco influences push this track further into alternative dance than even Reflektor. It really is a great song though, and it's pretty danceable too. Spoiler 81. America - Foxygen It's definitely very over the top and dramatic, but it has a charm about it. The song switches itself up so often it can be disconcerting, but it this contributes to the circusy, Broadway kind of feeling of the song. I'd say it works better in album context too. Ultimately though, it's a pretty fun song to listen to, especially the instrumental middle section. Spoiler

Tom Vercetti Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 Oatmeal is my other favorite from Sudan. Siphon, White Gum, STRMB, America > Thought Spaceship was an appropriate closer for Rainbow.
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 20, 2017 ATRL Moderator Posted December 20, 2017 Siphon is very emotionl, but not one of the strongest on the album. Spaceship is cute. I dismissed STRMB as a bad cut copy song at first but then i got around to this year's CC album and well... Forgiveness My fave on the EP

volition Posted December 21, 2017 Author Posted December 21, 2017 (edited) Top Songs of 2017: 80 - 71: 80. Blue Train Lines (feat. King Krule) - Mount Kimbie First off, it's always initally kinda hilarious how King Krule's voice is so completely unexpected based on what he looks like lol. We start the song with that deep ass voice in a thick British accent just being super manic. He brings a post-punk feel to the song, but Mount Kimbie's role here can't be overlooked, as the song is elevated with the electronic influences. Spoiler 79. Fake Happy - Paramore You think from that little lo-fi intro that this track is an immediate change from the rest of the album, but then the keyboard chords come in and we get into another tropical-inflected new wave pop song that continues the lyrical themes of the rest of the album. Paramore definitely have an affinity for powerful choruses, and with the pretty universally relatable mood of the song, the delivery is pretty moving. Spoiler 78. Cave - Future Islands Album was kinda average for sure. I only really used a few songs from Singles anyway so I was never a massive follower of this band. This is one of the better tracks on here though, a synthy little pop song with a drum beat that recalls the urgency of their most famous song. Relistening to this, maybe I should give the album another chance, because I've always liked his voice. Anyway, this song is good yes. Spoiler 77. Les oxalis - Charlotte Gainsbourg The ~8 minute closer from Rest is definitely groovy. I think that enlivens the song for those who don't understand the French, because the lyrics are absolutely heartbreaking. The song is about the passing of her sister, and it's written really excellent and poetically. The vocal melody only contributes to the sadness of the song. While the final couple of minutes does clash with the rest of the song, I assume it's her sister singing the alphabet and therefore it adds to the emotional value of this closer. Spoiler 76. Boredom - Tyler, the Creator A breezy little song from Tyler here, that was one of the first songs I heard from his album and definitely signified his aesthetic shift. It's dreamy and peaceful but that message is important, 'find some time to do something'. You don't have to be a super busy celebrity to appreciate that message. Spoiler 75. Boys - Charli XCX I really had to include it. It's not my favourite of Charli's material, and it definitely got more hype because of the video, but the sentiment is so cute and the little Mario video game bleeps are super likable. I think the idea was executed really perfectly. Spoiler 74. Slip Away - Perfume Genius A highlight of No Shape for sure. I'm personally more of a fan of Perfume Genius's more bombastic moments so this track hit the mark for me. It's a short track but it gets to the point pretty soon. I love his vocal performance here too, it's very emotive. Spoiler 73. Silver - Waxahatchee If you are an OWH you can get off my profile thank you!!!!!!! Yes, this indie rock song is not exactly compositionally groundbreaking, but it's still cathartic enough to get the point across. The song has a moving sense of closure to it, and those choruses have got to make you feel something. Spoiler 72. Passionfruit - Drake Drake really came through with More Life, which is so much better than Views it's surprising which one was the album and which one was the 'playlist'. The majority of tropical house music makes me want to kill myself, but this proves that the genre is totally redeemable. Drake plays to his strengths by showing off his smooth and relaxing voice over an almost hypnotic beat, resulting in a relaxing listen. The opening skit is mildly charming but also wholly unnecessary so points off for that. Spoiler 71. Waitin - Kelela Hard to pick highlights from such a fantastic album, but this single has to get a nod. While Kelela's music is significantly electronic, this track is possibly the closest to the more traditional R&B of the 90s. It's confident and sleek, and the production isn't too overblown but it compliments the vocal lines well, with little finger clicks here and there. A knockout single for sure. Lazuli Posted December 22, 2017 Posted December 22, 2017 Fake Happy Slip Away is perfection too Boys Silver Quote If you are an OWH you can get off my profile thank you!!!!!!! Poor @AlexisNeiers Ugh the opening of Passionfruit turns me off a LOT
Vxspertine Posted December 22, 2017 Posted December 22, 2017 I completely forgot about Mount Kimbie's album for some reason, I actually liked the singles a lot too Fake Happy was... decent Charlotte Gainsbourg was a big surprise for me this year, I usually don't like music in French I agree that Les oxalis is probably one of the groovy tracks on the album, one of my favorites Slip Away is one of the better tracks on No Shape I gave the Waxahatchee a listen a few days ago and it was v decent Passionfruit Drake's best song Waiting
Tom Vercetti Posted December 22, 2017 Posted December 22, 2017 All Drake had to do was release an edited version of passionfruit and get right to business with that instrumental. Loving the Charlotte, Tyler, Perfume Genius, and Kelela tracks.
