ManDown Posted December 28, 2017 Author Posted December 28, 2017 I'm back y'all! I was going too fast with my list and had a lot going on for the holidays. I'll be doing tons of songs today, hopefully finishing up tomorrow. And then moving on to albums and artists!
ManDown Posted December 28, 2017 Author Posted December 28, 2017 23 Kendrick Lamar – HUMBLE. As a Kendrick Lamar fan, "Humble" really took me by surprise. I was used to his music being instantly catchy and addicting, but it typically takes me a few listens to decide on my favorites. However, "Humble" was different. I quickly found myself replaying it and can still enjoy it to this day as if I've never heard it. 22 Steve Lacy – Ryd Steve Lacy was a great find for me this year. I've always kind of liked The Internet, but wasn't a huge fan. When I came across Steve's solo music on a Spotify playlist earlier this year, it was love at first listen. "Ryd" has a classic sound to it, but still sounds unlike anything I've ever heard before. 21 Sampha – Blood on Me This was the first year I found myself really getting into Sampha's music. I first discovered his music via Solange's Saint Heron compilation album. I loved his contribution to "Don't Touch My Hair" as well, and was really excited to learn he was releasing any album this year. "Blood On Me" quickly became a favorite of mine. It's one of those songs you can tell the artist put a lot of thought into, as he even ran prior to recording the song to sound out of breath, as the song deals with paranoia and panic. 20 Alexandria – You Ain't Gotta Lie Out of the songs on my countdown, "You Ain't Gotta Lie" is one of my more recent discoveries. Again, I came across Alexandria's music via an alternative R&B Spotify playlist. The aesthetic of the song reminded me of Kelela and fka Twigs a bit, but with more of a "true" R&B tone.
ElevateHigher Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 Humble is the only one I know from this set I will check out the others later since I really like your taste

Kiss It Better Posted December 30, 2017 Posted December 30, 2017 Humble I like Blood on Me and his album too
TheWayWeWere Posted December 30, 2017 Posted December 30, 2017 Humble is great, not a fan of Kendrick, but this song is everything
ManDown Posted December 31, 2017 Author Posted December 31, 2017 Thanks everyone. More updates coming now. I'll be checking out your countdowns today btw if I haven't already.
ManDown Posted December 31, 2017 Author Posted December 31, 2017 19 Aly & AJ – Take Me Aly & AJ, an all but forgotten gem of the 00s, made their comeback this year with the infectious single "Take Me". It was a completely different sound for them, but boy does it work for their voices. It has a "Love Me Like You Do"-type vibe to it; epic but chill. Hope to hear more from them like this in the future. 18 SZA – Love Galore "Love Galore" came at a time when we (SZA fans) were giving up on any hope of ever receiving the long awaited album. The song took a minute to grow on me, unfortunately. I found myself favoring "Drew Barrymore" for the first month or so, until the song finally connected with me one day. It is one of those songs you will find yourself humming without even thinking about it. Hearing it live in concert was one of the highlights of my year; the audience felt like a giant church choir catching the holy spirit to SZA. 17 ionnalee – SAMARITAN "Samaritan" was a welcomed surprise for me this year. I have been an iamamiwhoami fan since day 1. I didn't connect with some of Blue as much as I had Bounty and Kin, but "Samaritan" grabbed my attention much like her earlier releases had. 16 Lorde – Homemade Dynamite "Homemade Dynamite" is another song that didn't connect with me right away. It took the mediocre remix featuring one of my favorite artists to get into the superior original song. Lorde did not disappoint with this song, which is unlike anything she has ever made.
