The only songs to hit 10+ weeks at #1 without remixes, covers, sampling, etc. are:

16: "One Sweet Day"

14: "I'll Make Love To You" "We Belong Together" "I Gotta Feeling"

13: "End of the Road" "The Boy Is Mine"

12: "Smooth" "Lose Yourself" "Blurred Lines (it doesn't sample anything, musically it contains nothing from that Marvin song) "See You Again"

11: "Un-Break My Heart"

10: "Physical" "Maria Maria" "Irreplaceable" "Low" "We Found Love" "Happy" "Hello"

Every other song at 10+ weeks contains a sample, interpolation, has a more popular remix, or is a cover

So, no, not Despacito

What does "Despacito" sample?

He's referring to the fact that it's a remix

Not looking at samples - I'm looking at original pieces (which doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, you could make a million diff lists with a million diff requirements for fun lol) and "Despacito" alongside "CITW97" and "Macarena" hit #1 due to remixes. The others not included might be samples, interpolations, etc.

Not anything that noteworthy, just an "ATRL stat" that the GP would never care about, but :michael:

What's truly impressive is the originals entirely done by one person that manage to reach many weeks atop ("Crank Dat," "Happy").

Oh, yeah :rip: Well, okay.

Glad to see classics like "Hello" and "Lose Yourself" being original and successful. My faves :alexz:

Yeah, I thought you only meant samples. But, yes, it's an interesting stat either way.

I'm seeing lambs on Instagram begging for people to stream anything else. They were even promoting Pink's new single. :ahh:

! great observations too

I still can't believe Pharrell and Thicke got ****ed for copying the "vibe" of a song :rip: Courts are a mess

I low key agree :toofunny3: like if the same groove/vibe/instruments is enough to sue, every 2010-11 dance pop song should have sued each other lol

That's actually a pretty interesting observation. let me add:

I Will Always Love You (14 weeks) is actually a cover of Dolly Parton

The Boy Is Mine (13 weeks) is kind of a response to The Girl Is Mine

Closer (12 weeks) interpolates Cable Car by the Fray

Shape of You (12 weeks)  interpolates No Scrubs by TLC

Blurred Lines (12 weeks) had that whole mess with the Marvin Gaye song

Gold Digger (10) samples Ray Charles

One Dance (10) is based off a sample/remix of Do You Mind by Kyla

so Bodak Yellow going #1 confirmed? :duca:

"Blurred Lines" was an atrocious song. Glad it was called-out for its lack of originality and now the song is nowhere to be seen in the iTunes 1500, unlike real respected classics like STIUTK, RITD and Radioactive.

So, "Hello", "Despacito" and "We Belong Together" are among the only few mostly original tracks to spend 10+ weeks at #1. Good to know.

Hello samples Lionel Richie's Hello...

again, it broke the record for most weeks at #1 on digital songs, this is an abnormally well performing song irrespective of streaming

Two versions help with that for digital and streaming too tbh.

The fact that you were searching for this,  though but yes any stan would be in that position.

Once it hit 12-13 weeks I had a feeling but my thing is don't just break it with 17 weeks might as well go 20 weeks.

The game continues to be about breaking records but not about doing it with quality. Adele is the only exception. Rihanna will make Madonna's records pale in significance which is an example of the trend of the current
