White Christmas is the biggest selling single in music history, selling around 50 M singles since its release in the 1940s.

Candle In The Wind 1997 is the biggest selling single in the "Rock Era," selling 33 M copies worldwide and 11 M in the US. CITW 97 is the only song to earn, and will probably always be, a Diamond Certification in sales alone. It sold 4.5 M in the UK, and remained in Canada's Top 20 songs for three YEARS.

Songs like CITW 97 are why Billboard needs to factor "power points" based on songs' certification levels to their all time Hot 100. Songs like CITW 97 and I Will Always Love You didn't have outstanding longevity. However, they were so strong at their peaks that they should rank ahead of smaller songs that hung around forever because the competiton was weak. Or, songs like Uptown Funk, who were huge and kept big songs like TOL from reaching #1.

All time charts aren't accurate by relying on chart data alone. They need to be balanced by how big they were in comparison to other songs. I was actually coming up with a lower points platform when I was trying to come up with the decade Hot 100.

I would add Hello here since it had two biggest selling weeks in history but was pushed out of chart due to stupid reccurency rule

How are you forming your decade H100?

T10 I'm guessing (so far):

1. Despacito

2. Party Rock Anthem

3. Uptown Funk!

4. Shape Of You

5. Closer

6. We Found Love

7. See You Again

8. Somebody That I Used To Know

9. Can't Stop The Feeling!

10. Rolling In The Deep

curious to know other's thoughts on the T10 of the decade so far

does wild thoughts still have a chance at #1 @simmnfierzig ? Thanks

Of course

It will overtake Despacito pretty soon. In ~4 weeks probably.

Question is if anything will overtake WT before that. No way really to know that right now

Thriller (song)wasn't even that big. It's just the video that made it legendary.

Doesnt matter

30 years later and everyone knows Thriller and its been like that since its release

Its chart performance doesnt reflect that...but its a ubiquitous tune that just about everyone knows

It isn't YET - but it has potential to have the best chart life of all time. In terms of size though, it's already the most streamed and most viewed in just over half a year. 16+ weeks at #1 and god knows how long in the T5/10/25/etc. to come.

This song will be kept alive by Spanish radio and avoid the 25/52 rule easily

Was Avicii a surprise release? I wonder what his streaming #s will be

I had put together a chart based only on time within the Top 40. For the superrecurrents, I allowed points from 41 to 50. I did a lot of work, And I have saved it. I haven't revisited it in quite some time though. @artpop came up with almost all of the chart runs too. Oh yeah, and then I took six months off of ATRL, which meant he was trying to finish everything right about the time I signed off to concentrate on school.

My Top Ten will not necessarily look like BB's. I'm trying to split the points where certifications (or estimated for the labels slacking) and chart runs were each around 50%. However, songs with long runs, like Closer but not a ton of power would be heavier in chart run points. In contrast, as @UNNAMI said songs like Hello would have more power points.

For CITW 97, I find most impressive the listed stat of 870,000 copies sold in the first 24 hours in the UK.

thsts just mind boggling,  especially as thst was in the days before legal downloads.  The logistics, and the fact that there were that many copies available in stores upon release, is astounding.  The fact it didn't have months of lead planning time to make and get that many copies to stores even makes it more impressive.

whoever was the person who gaged correctly thst unheard of level of supply availability is a hero of logistics.

its also important to note all proceeds (writer, artist, label) world wide went to charity and many stores donated their profits.

the Canada point of longevity is a bit of an exception.  It was due to a lack of physical singles available in the market in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Top sellers sold extremely limited small amounts usually as the new releases wasn't in stores,

Yeah. I actually preordered the single to make sure I got a copy. That's the only time I've ever had to buy a song ahead of time. I remember the projections were around 2 M for the first week. CITW 97 actually sold almost twice that much, 3.45 M.

I'm a bit confused :dies:

It's #2 behind a song that obviously can't stay #1 for much longer.

According to what? It's dropping on Spanish formats because it's old

Um... that's what ATRL said about Closer. :toofunny2: Despacito has been charting for over 7 months so that's already longevity there.

But breaking record? has a chance?

I wonder if there's a big debut coming soon..otherwise Wild Thoughts will be #1 by default.

It sold like 1.5 million copies in 24 hours in the US but i agree the UK figure is more impressive since they always have smaller sales figures

TEA. People who saying Despacito is bigger than Thriller is absolutely blinded by the charts. No song in history will be as iconic as Thriller, imo, simply based on the video alone.

What's the battle for the Year End #1 album looking like?

Is Kendrick catching up with Ed fast enough or has Ed locked it in?

Kendrick is #1 on both Billboard and Nielsen year-end album charts.
