Katamari Posted 16 hours ago Posted 16 hours ago the full quote Quote "I was 18 on the set, dealing with [my co-star] Orlando [Brown]. So I had a lot more things to worry about than Miley Cyrus. Was there, in my brain, a 'WTF' on what, why, and how [her career] is going faster than what I went through? Obviously. But then at that time, you chalk it up to skinny, white, and the foundation was already built…and talent. My girl, Miley, she's talented." i think some of yall posting based off the title 1

Afterglow Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago (edited) She's absolutely correct. And it's "Symone" not "Simone". 40 minutes ago, Mtjjproducer said: Raven stalled for a few reasons. First her solo music sucked. She didn't go on tour with cheetah girls which didn't extend that brand. Also she was aging out of the Disney brand. add to the fact that the only non acting Disney adult thing I remember her was that low budget high school bully role she had when she played a middle age cheerleader. Honestly I was surprised Disney asked her to come back after she did the view. Okay enough with the "her music sucks" rhetoric, yall say that and don't seem to know much about her career or material. Your comment is completely subjective opinion and actually disrespectful to her legacy. What is fact is Raven served completely fine and serviceable pop music that was ignored by the Disney audience because it was R&B forward and much, much more mature than what you all were used to the other girls serving. Disney had no idea how to market a voice or a girl who looked like Raven nor did the tween audience know how to recieve her as a singer. Black audiences slightly latched on to Backflip (it had a run on BET and 106th & Park) but she was not marketed to the GP. Raven said as much on her MySpace about her frustrations with Hollywood Records double standards, she even had to come out of pocket for her self-titled album. And this goes forward for most all black teen stars, they are ignored by the audience in many mediums outside of comedy and people "don't remember" their projects. Keke Palmer Corbin Bleu Zendaya I could list many more. Completely unable to get music careers off the ground despite success in acting. And people saying they're tired of black people expressing their trauma are absolutely insane and absurd individuals. Edited 15 hours ago by Afterglow 9
AvadaKedavra Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago (edited) I dont think the comparison with miley is fair. Theyre both from a different generation of stars The comparison should be with hilary duff and lizzie mguire. Her real peer Edited 15 hours ago by AvadaKedavra
Cheers Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago That obviously played a part but idk there's also something about Raven that's just not stannable. Shes talented but uninteresting. She can obviously sing but her tone wasn't anything interesting. IMO she should've pursued acting harder than singing.

Popboi. Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago That, on top of Miley being more talented, new in the scene, younger and having an instant successful show all aligned. Like Raven said, in the end of the day she got her bag, became one of the biggest star childs and by when Miley debuted she was already an adult about to leave Disney. Also the success of That's So Raven opened doors for future shows, they knew they could market new stars with sitcoms.

And people saying they're tired of black people expressing their trauma are absolutely insane and absurd individuals. I agree with the general sentiment here but her music can't both be serviceable pop music & forward R&B… I think you hit on the nail the latter thought, it wasn't serviceable. It was more R&B and she didn't really have the greatest voice to market. She worked with top producers and songwriters as well, so the potential was there. I'm not going to say her music sucked but it definitely wasn't something a young audience was going to stick with either. It was kind of easy for Miley because she had the Hannah persona and the show's plot revolved around a pop singer so that transition was almost seamless. Almost similarly with Hilary & Lizzie. I disagree with the white & skinny comment altogether because Disney had plenty of failed white wanna-be singers. Even non-Disney white girls were flailing next to Britney & Christina, while being pushed to replicate them at some point diminishing returns. Raven had musical moments during TSR but it ultimately wasn't the driving plot behind the series. The Cheetah Girls was doomed with the typical situation dealing with a girl group + two of the girls had already suffered the drawback of trying to come up as a group via 3LW. That coupled with being a concept and not an actual developed group it wasn't an opportunity for Raven to continue to branch out. I have to disagree with Keke & Zendaya. Keke wasn't with Disney when she started putting out music. Her labels in general failed her. Zendaya actually had a well received album, it was serviceable and Replay is a little classic for her. She just never expanded on that.

Raven is by far the most talented comedic actress to ever grace a Disney Channel series, and I wish she had found a way to graduate into adult comedy films and television series. But I guess she didn't really want to? I still watch old TSR clips from time to time and remain amazed by her comedic timing/delivery and especially her knack for physical comedy — all as a teenager! 1
