When Nic first came out to his mother, she wondered aloud if he was actually nonbinary — "an okay reaction," he tells her playfully. "I tell my mom almost everything." His family, including his dad, has been "very accepting, so I'm not super afraid to say this stuff," he adds. Salonga "just didn't want my life to be as hard as it would be." 

 

And Nic is well-aware that in today's world, growing up trans is indeed challenging. Even with a parent as understanding as Salonga, who has advocated for LGBTQ+ rights since the AIDS crisis struck members of the theater community, Nic's transition has been an emotional process. "This was the most ideal situation for me," he says, and still, "It was rough."

 

"Every child that comes into this world is different," says Salonga. "You have to meet your kid where they are."

Yes, but Lea does the singing! I'm pretty sure I read Lea was gonna be the talking voice too but struggled making a "convincing" deep voice Mulan needs at times
