Canadian retailers are turning away US products

The "Buy Canadian" movement is sending new ripples of concern through the executive offices of U.S.-based consumer companies that banked on selling their products on Canadian retail shelves.

California-based diaper maker Parasol Co had been working since January with a distributor to expand the sale of its diapers and baby wipes to new retailers in Canada, including convenience stores.

But, in early March the distributor, who Hung declined to name, halted work on the deal, she said, because of growing anti-American sentiment in  Canada.

U.S. President Donald Trump's jabs to annex Canada, the imposition of a 25 per cent levy on steel and aluminum from Canada and threats to tax all other imports from the country have prompted a rallying cry among many Canadian shoppers to eschew U.S.-made products.

Parasol, which sells its products primarily online and at Target stores in the U.S., was working on labeling its packages in French for Canadian shoppers, Hung said.

GT's Living Foods, based in Los Angeles, California, and known for its Synergy kombucha products, said retailers in Canada, including Walmart, have been placing orders for fewer products because of tariff uncertainty.

"The distributors for Walmart Canada, Loblaw's, Metro and Sobey's told us they will buy one truck instead of two trucks of products, because retailers are being cautious and they are waiting to see how this (tariff situation) will play out," said Daniel Bukowski, who managed the accounts of these retailers for GT's Living Foods and was senior vice president of sales until mid-March.

The article is really long & detailed, but basically a lot of Canadians stopped buying US-made products to the point that stores do not even order US products anymore because they just stay on the shelves. Where is all this leading?

This is a mess

America is heading to a depression, everything will get more and more expensive and there will be a lot of lay offs once all the other countries start doing the same than Canada

Tbh it might be safe to get out while you can, other countries will also have some economic challenges but they don't have an Orange man destroying their country

Is it crazy to think Trump wants to take over the US currency and replace it with his own? :deadbanana2:

Good. I hope everywhere else turns away US goods. I fear we need a whole ass Great Depression Part II for the Republicans to realize trump is all kinds of wrong.

Most of the people who voted for trump are still supporting him

I don't see them changing their mind even in a Depression because they'll think he has a master plan or some **** like that. They all follow that Christian religion that teaches them to suffer and be rewarded in the after life

In other words, they are rotten beyond repair

The only real solution is to leave America or separate the country in several parts tbh

I'm living in Canada and people are taking it very seriously here - they're not buying anything that is US made or made by a US owned company. Not just goods, services too. It feels organised and coordinated.

Even Starbucks??? But how do they survive???

I don't think lowering or removing the tariffs would reverse that behaviour in its entirety. Just how US-China trade has never recovered from the trade war during Trump's first administration - the tariffs change behaviour. People in Canada are learning to live without US products. Why would they go back?

Well good :clap3:

The sooner the maggots realize their dear leader is making them suffer and become unemployed, the faster the world can get rid of him.  Hopefully he's put in jail one day.

As a Canadian the only silver lining about all of this is I have never seen canadians be this patriotic and also this will force us to expand our markets a lot more. Obviously we can never truly replace America in terms of business but we can ween ourselves off of this MASSIVE economic depence at least. We need to expand our trade partnerships especially with the EU and China (which Canada actually has a terrible relationship with).

Also another added bonus is tons of top notch American intellectuals, professors etc are moving to Canada which will help our tax base since we ACTUALLY tax our rich (tho still not enough but much better than the US) and our universities will have even greater thinkers teaching new generations. I just read an article about how 4 TOP TIER professors at Yale have signed contracts to teach at Toronto U instead nad are permanently moving to Canada.

Trump thinks he can destroy us and we will hurt majorly but in the long run we will rise above all of this and we will come out the stronger party :clap3:

I mean... that's debatable  I just go there out of convenience lol That said, there's plenty of local coffee shops here in Toronto and I'm sure around the country that are much better than both Starbucks and Tims. As far as coffee chains go even Second Cup is better (although seems to be harder to find).
