VENUSWAVE Posted February 20 Posted February 20 by the first single i was scared we might be entering another "let us make 4 albums to craft the perfect one" streak but Bunky Pop is great so im perchedT Texis is still AOTY and arguably their best
JoeAg Posted February 20 Posted February 20 both singles are excellent and very much a return to form this is gonna be amazing

I'm definitely getting tickets for their new tour Well, yes! Like 3 times. They're really good! My small note is that their shows tend to be on the shorter side compared to other shows I've been to, so I'm hoping for a meatier setlist this time around. 1
Jay L Posted February 23 Author Posted February 23 "Bunky Becky" was a nickname for Alexis' dog Riz, who passed away in December 2023. When she passed away, Alexis and I had been talking about writing an anthem for her. And then Alexis' son Wilder was born, and he's the birthday boy. Even though the title sounds a little ridiculous — and it's totally okay to laugh at it — with a little bit of context, it's actually life and death. We lost somebody that we love, and we gained somebody that we love. "Wanna Start A Band?" is on Bunky Becky Birthday Boy, and so is the new single "Bunky Pop." It's a giddy, charged-up, fun-as-hell rager, and it employs what I can only call "Hollaback Girl" blastbeats. It sounds like a Sleigh Bells song, in all the best ways. Derek Miller explains that it's a song about a happy dog, which tracks We wanted the track to sound like a dog having the best moment of her life without any of the burden of self-consciousness. "Bunky Pop" informed the entire record, and Bunky Becky kind of became a character woven into every song. We wanted to give her a friend, Roxette Ric, so we could play with a little bit of autobiography and fiction as well. Learning the meaning behind the album title and song Bunky Pop adds another layer RIP Riz
skankle Posted February 23 Posted February 23 Texis was really good and unfairly slept on! I like both these songs a lot, hope the tour makes it to the UK this time around.
voiceofTreason Posted February 23 Posted February 23 I'm glad they're back but these songs… I really tried to like Texis but Jessica Rabbit remains their last decent effort
AndresVanDeKamp Posted February 23 Posted February 23 Love these! I've only listened to Treats so maybe I should go back and explore their work more, since I do really dig it.
Diarrhoea Posted February 23 Posted February 23 I quite like Bunky Pop! And WSAB? has a fun instrumental. I think we need to come to terms with the fact Alexis is one of the worst pop musicians, ever. They have two fantastic albums and then her artistic input increased and it all went horribly wrong. They've had 3.5 albums with her having more presence and they've all been failures to a greater (Texis) or lesser (the rest) extent and I don't think this is going to be much better. 12 years of output and the only one which is slightly okay from front-to-back is Jessica Rabbit, where Derek had to sterilise their sound to match her lack of talent for it to be even remotely aligned and consistent. Sure, they somehow accidentally stumbled onto some Discipline-era King Crimson energy which kind of worked but the past decade has shown me that this wasn't on purpose. Terrible vocals. Terrible lyrics. Terrible vision. When will she learn? How long does she need to insist on her awful contributions before economic reality hits them? What is not clicking? Shame on her the Trump of pop music. Great 2 songs per album beautiful 2 songs per album forever with them I guess 2 1 1

makeawish Posted March 3 Posted March 3 was starting to get into the idea of a new sleigh bells album and then i read that hater post and it kinda sapped all my enthusiasm. but at least i have that much more spare time now!
Jay L Posted March 3 Author Posted March 3 We can all debate about the band's artistry and music I guess but one thing that is not up for debate is Ms Alexis Texis's vocals. She can sing and yall know it 1

Great 2 songs per album beautiful 2 songs per album forever with them I guess While I don't disagree that the quality has gone down since Alexis has taken on a larger role, her vocals are not terrible. Derek got really lucky by finding her because her voice synchronizes so well with the music. I don't even think she's a terrible musician. They were already moving in this direction for Reign of Terror. I'm glad they're still making music because most of it is way more interesting than most mainstream pop these days.

Great 2 songs per album beautiful 2 songs per album forever with them I guess Only on ATRL could I read such a vicious drag of Alexis Krauss As much as I enjoyed the read I can't really agree, the gal can SING and the I enjoy that the later output lets her do more with her voice than she used to. It also helps live - see the exceptional KEXP performance above. And afaik Derek still writes almost all the lyrics and Alexis mainly contributes some topline stuff, so we can't blame her entirely for that side of things! Anyway I returned to this thread to say I have been spamming the two singles because they've both grown on me a lot Looking forward to the alboom! 1

Anyway I returned to this thread to say I have been spamming the two singles because they've both grown on me a lot Looking forward to the alboom! Girl can hit a note! Can she convey anything with her vocals? She is an emotional black hole. Like take True Seekers for example - it's meant to be the emotional apex of the album and she has the flavour of water. She sounds like she's reading a script and being told what pitch she should hit but has absolutely no connection to it whatsoever. Again for Jessica Rabbit it works because there's meant to be that disconnect, and for the first two albums she was firmly in her her studio-singer lane (where she should be), but for their other albums - the ones where she's given anything to do - she fails miserably. I think she just doesn't have the chops. Spoiler I'm kind of gaslighting myself into really liking Bunky Pop
