DanyelP23 Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Emilia got 13 noms. Meanwhile, Selena Gomez missed an Oscar nom after being mentioned as a nominee at both Golden Globes and BAFTA. Why? Surprised? 1 2 2
Lorelei Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Why does everyone hate this film? Haven't watched it yet.
alexrex Posted January 23 Posted January 23 (edited) I don't think it is necessarily a terrible film. I find the way it was made was interesting, and it should be acknowledged for that (Maybe not an Oscar though). But at the same time I believe the French director deserves the backlash for making a film about Mexico without making a proper research about the current political situation, and Mexican culture in general. Also for not casting a Mexican actress for one of the three main roles (And having Selena Gomez struggling to speak Spanish). And for making a story about a trans woman without really understanding the struggle trans people go through. And generally for the blatant ignorance of a white european director towards Latin America, who didn't care to take a deeper look before making a film about our culture. K$Ellie Posted January 23 Posted January 23 so bizarre and embarrassing that they're shoving this movie down our throats at every award show when literally no one likes it, the most positive thing i've seen movie fans say is that it's not THAT bad 4
DirtyPony87 Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Trash movie. I'm shocked by the amount of nominations, but it's a step in the right direction for the Oscars to finally nominate a trans woman for one of its main categories. I just can't with that movie and its problematic portrayals. Also: from pènis to vagǐnaaaaaa

The core is around trans people, but it tackles the subject like a person who've heard of trans only last week. It's set in Mexico, without the director or screenwriters having ever been to Mexico or speaking Spanish, so it's full of stereotypes and ridiculous assumptions of how Mexican culture is. The movie is French, made by French people, the director said they knew enough about Mexican culture when asked about research they did into it. There's ton of other things. Besides the point of the problematic stuff, it's just bad. The script is bad, the songs are all bad and cringy, the story is all over the place, with one of the key things being dropped mid story and never brought up again. It's just a badly executed movie. 1

Bittersweet. Posted January 24 Posted January 24 worst movie on earth. No me sorprendería que luego salgan noticias de corrupción, NETFLIX y Selena son enormes y seguro pagarían un buen por reconocimiento. 2
Bimbo Posted January 24 Posted January 24 This is so embarrassing for them. A bunch of white people saw the scene of a kid describing the smell of his dad as "guacamole, mezcal, spicy food" and went YES REPRESENTATION 😍😍😍 1 1
