And it worked as we continue to see overbloated police budgets while avoiding any actual accountability for the pigs on the force. These weren't worth anything to begin with!
Thuggin Posted January 11 Posted January 11 As much as I value the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, it's probably for the best that these programs end given the times that we're in. They put targets on the backs of minority groups without delivering sufficient material gain. And now you have every LGBTQ person or Black person with a job being called a DEI hire who didn't earn their place. Same with affirmative action, when these programs are gone, what then will conservatives blame for minority groups getting ahead? 1
Damien M Posted January 11 Posted January 11 It's fine. Tech companies are no longer the shiny, progressive startups of the past. They have peaked and are in cultural decline. They're the old guard now, like manufacturing used to be. They should not be looked at for direction. They're now $$ hungry capitalist machines looking for cheap(-er) labor + political favors. It's the cycle of life. Think of them like you would GM, Carrier or Johnson & Johnson. 3

Like the aims of making sure people with marginalized identities are not discriminated against in hiring practices? Great Addressing workplace harassment and policies that negatively and materially harm marginalized people (see: certain black hairstyles deemed 'unprofessional')? Great While if you'd want to address the root causes (funding in low-income schools to get more people of a specific economic or ethnic background into STEM, for example), those new departments or branches in the company would be lobbying politicians for changes in laws, etc. But instead of either happening, it felt like for every 1 positive policy win that had wider effects, there were 8 or so instances of someone from an affluent background but marginalized identity using these kinds of initiatives to personally enrich themselves and their friends in whatever career field that they were operating within. Lots of consulting happening for the sake of consulting, discussions of how to be inclusive without action, etc. Which is like... werk, sis, get money! But we're now seeing the impact of not utilizing these levers of power to first ensure legal and structural victories for people over symbolic and personal ones. Isnt this problematic itself? I know the goal is to end the racial/ethnic bias and discrimination in hiring but isnt this a form of bias as well, only couched as "prioritization"? It suffers the same problem as affirmative action, it doesnt really resolve the issue itself. It just creates more divisions and resentment and ironically increases the likelihood of more ethnic/racial bias. A glorified stop gap measure. Hiring should be based on competence, skill and compatability period. White/Black/Asian/Latino/etc, if you're good and likeable enough, you're hired, if you suck, bye bye 2

It may sound like bringing equity on the surface, but really it only leads to performative inclusion that creates resentment and toxicity. I say this is as a friend of someone who is the DEI director for one of the most DEMONIC health insurance companies. Like, what is the point? The death panels are lined with trans ppl and womyn? capitalism is so disjointed and fundamentally toxic at this stage that these tactics have become increasingly useless and purposefully divisive Edited January 12 by modeblock
