Los Angeles residents are furious a billionaire tycoon spent thousands of dollars on private firefighters to help protect his business while emergency services struggle to contain the flames.

Billionaire developer and former mayoral candidate Rick Caruso is receiving backlash online after the New York Times reported that he had hired private fire crews to protect Palisades Village - an upscale outdoor mall owned by the businessman.

'So Rick directly or indirectly contributed to the fires by diverting resources to himself and away from the greater population. I think this needs to be investigated ASAP', one user wrote on X.

Another said: 'We cannot survive the billionaire class'. A separate account commented: 'Dystopian capitalism'.

Diverting resources is disgusting :biblionny:

I mean, why wouldn't you :ace: if anybody could afford that to protect their property you would, and anyone saying otherwise is just saying so to be controversial.

I don't see anything wrong with that. How do we know it's diverting resources, were the firemen employed by the LA fire dept?

They county was struggling with resources to control fires and he took them from the city to protect exclusively his property

He did not hire external help to protect his property he stole help from the general public

That's what makes this so disgusting

The keyword here is 'private'

They were private? It's not like he paid official firefighters and drew resources elsewhere. Private means private.

Water is not an infinite resource, especially during a fire. Even if he wasn't diverting firefighters from the official LA Department to protect his business, he was most likely utilizing water that could've been used to keep other people's houses from burning down.

y'all not seeing how this is wrong :rip: the absolute lack of critical thinking  society needs to desperately implement educational chips into our brains because the plot has officially been lost

The thing is though, people outside of the left wing online bubble see it the exact opposite way, he's totally going to win the next LA mayoral race in 2026 :skull:

Karen Bass is in a huge scandal now with how she divested funds from the fire department and had no answer at all when confronted. People in the city are really angry and they'll see Caruso as a tough business guy who can play dirty to change things, like how Trump voters see Trump.

Oh okay I just re-read the text

If he hired external help that doesn't interfere with public help I can't really say this is wrong

Any sane person would've protected their property first, especially if you have the resources to do so

Houses are probably more important to the social good than *re-reads* a mall.

And other billionaires hiring private firefighters for their houses as well :deadbanana2: humanity is rotted

water is a finite, shared resource esp in SoCal.

Normalizing billionaires taking water via private fire crews only screws those who defend on the UNDERFUNDED, PUBLIC fire crews in Southern California

This should not be defended or normalized.

But like lapdogs, some Americans will defend billionaires even in the face of climate change driven droughts.

We're doomed.

Oh Luigi, we need you more than ever now.

the bootlicking here is crazy. even if he's not using public fire service, in an emergency like this he could instead hire the crew to help where it's actually needed and save people's lives, houses, schools, etc. idk why it's so normalised that some people just hoard resources and then use them to protect themselves meanwhile thousands are literally losing everything they own.

this man literally just threw his city under the bus for his own benefit, this is why the rich have to be eaten
