I think they lost a lot of fans during their flip floppy Christian era, they went back and forth with being Christians to not being Christians, so they never really formed a defined target audience. Their music has jumped from teen pop to indie pop to alternative, and while experimenting is cool, it made it hard for them to build a loyal fan base. Every time they try to make a comeback, it feels like they're starting from scratch because their brand has never been consistent enough to keep people hooked.
