A U.S. sanctions exemption for transactions with governing institutions in Syria is welcome, but "much more significant work ... will inevitably be necessary," the U.N. special envoy on Syria, Geir Pedersen, told the Security Council on Wednesday.

"I welcome the recent issuance of a new temporary General License by the United States government. But much more significant work in fully addressing sanctions and designations will inevitably be necessary," Pedersen told the council.

The U.S. on Monday issued a sanctions exemption, known as a general license, for transactions with governing institutions in Syria for six months in an effort to ease the flow of humanitarian assistance and allow some energy transactions.

Syria is unable to make deals to import fuel, wheat or other key goods due to strict U.S. sanctions and despite many countries, including Gulf Arab states, wanting to do so, Syria's new trade minister said.

In an interview with Reuters at his office in Damascus, Maher Khalil al-Hasan said Syria's new ruling administration had managed to scrape together enough wheat and fuel for a few months but the country faces a "catastrophe" if sanctions are not frozen or lifted soon.

Good on them for lifting some sanctions, but it just shows how impactful they are on a country's economy and how much they affect ordinary people's lives.

Why was the US even sanctioning wheat in the first place? That feels like punishing the population. I know that sanctions are an evil tool meant to make the population turn in the government but the ppl in Syria didn't even like Assad and couldn't get him out of office to begin with and tried multiple times so why not allow them to at least get ******* wheat for bread making. Disgusting imperial bs.

Seriously. :rip:

They tried portraying these sanctions as "now the Assad family can't buy Ferraris and Rolex watches!" when they actually put the entire populace close to a humanitarian crisis.

And now we have articles saying "omg, don't forget the sanctions, they're too harsh" without putting 2 and 2 together and realizing that if they're too harsh now, they were too harsh a year ago as well. :rip:
