The long list of changes to the new hate speech guidelines include removing rules that forbid insults about a person's appearance based on race, ethnicity, national origin, disability, religious affiliation, caste, sexual orientation, sex, gender identity and serious disease. Meta also scrapped policies that prohibited expressions of hate against a person or a group on the basis of their protected class and that banned users from referring to transgender or nonbinary people as "it."

 

GLAAD, an LGBTQ media advocacy group, denounced the changes.

"Without these necessary hate speech and other policies, Meta is giving the green light for people to target LGBTQ people, women, immigrants, and other marginalized groups with violence, vitriol, and dehumanizing narratives,"

Jokes aside these guidelines made social media a safer space but also hid a lot of people's real opinions about us. Social media should reflect its userbase for better and for worse if it's going to be a primary source of information. As long as it's okay to properly call out and attack users of hate speech in return I don't fully disagree with this. If MAGAs didn't feel the need to self-censor 24/7 and were educated instead of shamed into silently keeping their backwards views we wouldn't have a christofascist dictatorship starting here in less than 2 weeks.

 

It's worrying that this isn't coming with any measures to break people out of their political echo chambers though because while social media should reflect society, nobody's individual feed actually does. It's hard to feel like this is anything other than an attempt by the ruling corporations to continue radicalizing and dividing the public.

I would be upset by it IF this meant anything changing for Meta's users. As we all know though those categories weren't actually protected even when they were mentioned in the guidelines.
