Dante Silva Posted Sunday at 09:55 AM Posted Sunday at 09:55 AM (edited) I'm so surprised to discover this thread and to learn that anyone here even knows who Sandra is. It had crossed my mind at one point to create a thread for her but I decided not to as I thought absolutely nobody here would ever have heard of her. She wasn't played in my country and I discovered her through the internet back when her "Stay in Touch" album came out. I really enjoyed that album (and its bonus disc featuring extended versions of every track) - and subsequently explored the rest of her catalogue. Aside from "Stay in Touch" (produced by Blank & Jones), her 80's to early 00's material (produced by her ex husband Michael Crete) reigns supreme. I find tracks like - "In the Heat of the Night", "Hi Hi Hi", "Midnight Man", "Heaven can Wait", "Secret Land", "We'll be Together", "Don't be Aggressive", "Don't Run Away" and "Maybe Tonight" - to be amongst the best in her catalogue. Her album's from 1985's "The Long Play" through to 2002's "The Wheel of Time" (and the "Stay in Touch" album from 2012) are essential. I had been aware of Enigma, so I was shocked to discover Sandra had been the whispery voice on some of their early 90's, new age style hits. It was like unravelling a puzzle when I realised some of the Enigma production had carried over in to Sandra's own work. Particularly on the single "Don't be Aggressive", "I need Love" and the album "Close to Seven" (the parent album those two songs come from). Whilst exploring Sandra's back catalogue from the start, I was really disappointed when I got to her "The Art of Love" and "Back to Life" albums - both of which were the first in her career not to feature writing/ production oversight from what had by then become her ex-husband Michael Cretu. The album that preceded "Stay in Touch", "Back to Life" (2009), is particularly bad and was a vehicle for many off-loaded Toby Gad songs (who she worked with on this album), that were his barrel scrapings. It was interesting to learn that the album I discovered her through, "Stay in Touch" had been a conscious revival of her much earlier 1980's production sound and had reconnected her with a writer Jens Gad who had co-written on her last good album - prior to "Stay in Touch" (from 2012) - titled "Fading Shades" (from 1995). I find it sad that Sandra seems to have given up making new music since "Stay in Touch", because that album took every good writer/ collaborator from her early catalogue (that was not her ex-husband) - including Hubert Kemmler and paired them with Blank & Jones who replicated her ex-husband (Michael Cretu's) 1980's production sound. I felt that was a good creative setup in which she could have continued. Beyond her studio albums, I find the following two releases essential: This one mops up all of her extended versions from the 1980's (Note: there were some good one's from the 90's period of her career that are not included here). This one features a DVD that mops up all of her music videos in chronological sequence (all of which I discovered at the same time in 2016 through this DVD collection).
