The reason she wasn't in the video for "The best things in life are free" with Luther Vandross is because it was a soundtrack song that fell between album cycles when she was not slim and didn't want to be seen.

It may not be politically correct to discuss by today's standards but the industry has always placed pressure on women to conform to a certain beauty standard.
 

Some female entertainers understood this and managed it successfully without necessarily feeling the need to go on record to discuss the pressures of conforming to it and Janet was always highly disciplined in this regard.
