Taylor Swift leads the way in record-breaking year for female music artists

Quote

The UK streamed almost 200bn tracks in 2024, helping to increase the annual consumption of music by a tenth in a year that was also record-breaking for female music artists.

Physical music purchases, which include vinyl, CDs and cassettes, also grew for the first time in two decades, according to music industry group BPI, which represents the UK's record companies and label businesses.

Quote

Overall, UK recorded music consumption rose by close to 10 per cent to 201mn albums, or their equivalent in streaming numbers, marking a decade of uninterrupted growth, the BPI added.

Quote

Female artists proved the most popular in 2024, with the latest album by Swift the biggest selling and other hits from Charli XCX, Billie Eilish and Sabrina Carpenter.  Women topped the charts for the majority of weeks in 2024 and claimed half of the year's top 20 best-selling albums for the first time.

Quote

In the albums charts, Swift's The Tortured Poets Department recorded about 783,000 sales by the end of December — the most for any artist release in a calendar year since 2017.

Hopefully next she can get the UK music industry back on its feet and sort out the whole issue with the collapsing of UK record labels that would sign new artists because music has become STALE.

But ATRL will try to convince itself the album is local to the US and unknown. Facts don't matter. Only vibes do! :suburban:

I love FLO but if you're thinking that one measily girl group is gonna save UK Pop then you're mistaken. I miss the days when Polydor and Island were at their peak, we had tons of new pop acts and we wouldn't even have Lana and many other artists if it wasn't for Polydor putting them on. My point is the UK is the source of pop and it's really not giving as much as it used to due to the lack of investment. So before you come for my Swiftie stan card, do your research.

Taylor is a smart business woman and she went for numbers in streaming as a venture to stay relevant and guess what, she succeeded. She may not be in the business as long as Beyoncé but she's doing what she can to keep longevity and you've gotta give it to ha because she's doing it.

Whether you like her or not, it's clear that the album helped, I mean most units in a calendar year since Divide which was ubiquitous is incredible.

Nearly 800k when #2 is just below 400k (The Weeknd's The Highlights) and then Sabrina at #3 with 360k.

Also all folklore, Lover, 1989 TV are top 20 and both reputation and Midnights  just below that in the top 25 and 30. Yet some even try to argue how massive this year has been for her virtually everywhere :bibliahh:

No hate at all but how is she going to do this? Is she starting her own record label?

Part of the problem at the moment is British people are very willing to listen to new American acts but not British ones. Taylor and Sabrina scoring huge album sales doesn't seem like it's going to translate to greater investment in local acts.

I've always considered the Eras tour to be more of an attraction rather than an actual concert because it's a revisit to her discography, to people it's almost like visiting Disneyland as an adult. Instead of taking an approach of trying to remain youthful, I enjoyed the fact that she embraced her age and her journey in music. That in turn, she put her energy into the people. Donated to food banks, generated sales to help boost the concert / ticket industry which was heavily impacted after the pandemic. Obviously she wouldn't go out of her way to do a Drake and start signing young artists on her own label because as we witnessed, Drake eventually had a backlash when his artists started getting as big as him. The music industry has become crazy competitive because there's not enough money being funded into it right now. And it's almost like artists that have been around over the last decade are fighting to stay relevant over artists that are just getting their moment after trying to have their big break such as RAYE, Charli xcx, Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter. Artists nowadays try to go independent but it can only go so far if they don't have a following to back them e.g. Kim Petras and Azealia Banks.

America is the only country to still invest in their pop artists apart from Korea, and we all know the deal over there. The UK used to openly encourage and invite artists for a chance because it was a part of the culture. But since there's been a shift in the economy after the Tories ripped things to shreds, there just isn't room for it anymore.
