i love how she emulated y2k energy whilst being myspace nostalgic EVEN while incorporating modern new pop artists alongside alt indie musicians like julian casablancas. she resurrected indie sleaze and made it hers!

 

only thing i don't appreciate is her collab with fast fashion (h&m), but she was in her bag so

I mean it was pretty clear she had a lot of ambition (and considerably larger budget), marketing-wise, going into this era, and she'd clearly been sitting on some of these ideas for some time (her finsta username has been "360_brat" for at least three years now)

 

it was quite obvious that this was the secret ingredient to her big breakout this year, considering she broke absolutely zero ground for herself musically this time around

I believe about 10% of anything Charli says in interviews or social media ever since, like, self-titled's promo cycle, but I do think the era had been long-planned and uncharacteristically well-marketed. Whether these were actually notes from before is anyone's guess but for once it seems less likely she'd lie.
 

There's quite a few signs this project had been gestating for quite some time — definitely before Crash and maybe even hifn — and it's definitely no coincidence that she announced her first co-lead arena tour before the era really developed any legs. There was definitely a lot riding on this album from the outset  and a lot of faith from her team and label for the project to do well. It's very much her Random Access Memories (pejorative).

I wonder what her manifesto about "CRASH" was. It was kinda in the same ballpark but more obnoxious/safe in a way

An insider told me that she's planning to ditch music and fully go into her acting bag for the rest of her career

I do have to say, regardless of how I feel about the record, it's a very polarising outlook on how both an artist and a label have to cut out any dissonance in the boardroom in order to really make a project work. She was literally vocalising how "Crash" would be her final album under Atlantic, she gave them the pop manifesto they wanted but it came at no saloon. She had the decision to walk out, but instead she re-signed, presented a vision and asked them to trust her and it worked. It's cool.
